Places Worth Knowing a Little Better

• Mawlynnong, Meghalaya: Called "Asia's cleanest village" by Discover India magazine in 2003. Walk the bamboo skywalk and see the living root bridge at nearby Riwai.

• Double-decker root bridge, Nongriat: Two root bridges stacked over one stream. The walk down is roughly 3,000-plus steps, so start early and wear proper shoes.

• Dawki and the Umngot River: On a clear winter day, the water is so transparent that boats look like they're floating in the air.

• Kaziranga National Park: Home to roughly two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhinos. A 2022 count put the number at about 2,600.

• Tawang Monastery: India's largest Buddhist monastery, founded in the 1680s. On the way you cross Sela Pass at around 4,170 m.

• Majuli, Assam: One of the largest river islands in the world and India's first island district, known for its Vaishnavite satras and mask-making.

• Tsomgo Lake and Nathula, Sikkim: A glacial lake at about 3,750 m and, above it, the old Silk Route pass on the India–China border.

How to Reach North East India

Most North East tours start at Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), which has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai and other big cities. For Sikkim, fly into Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal and drive about 4 to 4.5 hours to Gangtok. By train, Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri (NJP) are the main railheads.

Guwahati is the region's main rail hub, with Rajdhani and other express trains from Delhi and Kolkata. For Sikkim, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the closest major station, around 4 hours by road from Gangtok.

What to Eat in North East India

Food in North East India is simple, fresh, and very different from what most people think of as "Indian food". Expect rice, smoked meats, fermented bamboo shoot, river fish and plenty of chilli. Try Assamese thali in Guwahati, jadoh in Shillong and momos with thukpa in Gangtok.

Best Time to Visit North East India

The best time to visit North East India is October to April, when skies are clear, roads are in good shape and Kaziranga National Park is open for safaris (roughly November to April). March to May suits Sikkim and Arunachal best. Meghalaya is at its greenest from June to September, but expect heavy rain.

North East India Weather: Month-by-Month Temperatures

North East India's weather changes a lot with altitude. Guwahati and Kaziranga are warm and humid most of the year, Shillong and Gangtok stay mild, and Tawang gets properly cold, often dropping below freezing in winter.

Permits You Need for North East India

Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur. Sikkim needs separate permits for Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and North Sikkim. Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura need no special permit. BizareXpedition applies for all of these on your behalf.

• Nathula Pass is open only to Indian nationals, and only on certain days of the week.

• Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Arunachal and parts of Sikkim. Rules for other states have changed in recent years, so we confirm the latest for your passport.

• What we need from you: a scan of a government photo ID and a passport-size photo, ideally 10–15 days before travel.
