About

The Diu Portuguese colony tour is a private 4-day heritage trip from Ahmedabad to Diu, a small island off the coast of Gujarat that was ruled by Portugal for more than 400 years. With a local heritage guide, you explore Diu Fort, take a boat to the sea fort of Panikota, visit St. Paul's and St. Thomas churches and walk the old Portuguese quarter. Prices start at about ₹48,321 per person

Diu feels like a place that history forgot to update. Pastel houses with wooden balconies line narrow lanes. Whitewashed churches rise above the rooftops. A massive stone fort guards the sea, its old cannons still pointing at the horizon. And then you remember you're in India.

This small island off the southern coast of Gujarat was a Portuguese colony from the 1530s until 19 December 1961, when it became part of India along with Goa and Daman. Four centuries of Portuguese rule left behind forts, churches, gateways and a slower, seaside way of life that still sets Diu apart.

Most travellers pass through Diu for a day at the beach. This tour does the opposite. It puts Diu's colonial heritage first, with a local guide who knows the stories behind every wall, and leaves the beach for your free time.

WHY BOOK THIS WITH BIZAREXPEDITION

A diu fort church tour built to give Diu's own four centuries of Portuguese history three full, dedicated days.

  • A full specialist trip, not a side stop. Diu appears in nine of BizareXpedition's own live Gujarat products today, always paired with a Gir safari or a beach stop. This itinerary is the first to give Diu's own colonial old town three full days on its own terms.

  • A heritage guide briefed on Diu specifically, not Gujarat generally. Day 2 and Day 3's walks through Diu Fort, Panikota, St. Paul's Church, St. Thomas Church and the Zampa Gateway run with a guide briefed on the Portuguese-period history of each site, not a general Kutch-or-Gir sightseeing guide reading off a signboard.

  • Both routes to the island, disclosed plainly. The daily Ahmedabad-Diu flight, about 1 hour 15 minutes, is this itinerary's first choice; the sheet names no transport mode, and where the flight schedule doesn't suit your dates, the roughly 360 km, 6.5 to 7 hour road transfer is the stated alternative, with that day's sightseeing adjusted accordingly.

  • The sheet's own route, kept as given. Ahmedabad-Diu-Ahmedabad needed no correction: Diu's own colonial old town is the entire trip, and four days is enough to walk it properly without rushing or padding it out.

  • A registered company, not a middleman. BizareXpedition Services Pvt. Ltd. (CIN U63090UR2016PTC007433), headquartered in Haridwar, plans and runs the trip itself.

SEASON ADJUSTMENTS

Season Months What to expect

Peak

November to February

Cool, dry, comfortable weather for walking the fort and old town through the day.

Shoulder

October and March

Warmer by midday; still workable with an earlier start at Diu Fort.

Avoid

April to June, and the monsoon (July-September)

Very hot pre-monsoon; monsoon brings heavy rain and can affect the Panikota boat crossing.

Flight note

Ahmedabad-Diu schedule varies by date

Confirm the day's flight before booking; the road transfer is always available as a fallback.

PRACTICAL NOTES

  • Getting to Diu, in plain terms. The sheet names no transport mode for this leg. This itinerary defaults to the daily Ahmedabad-Diu flight (about 1h15), with the roughly 360 km, 6.5 to 7 hour road transfer as the stated alternative when the flight schedule doesn't suit your dates; either way, Days 1 and 4 are built as connection days.

  • Diu is not mainland Gujarat. Alcohol is legal here, unlike the dry mainland; the island's own administration, a joint Union Territory with Dadra and Nagar Haveli, runs separately from Gujarat state.

  • The Panikota boat crossing. Depends on sea and tide conditions on the day; your guide confirms the morning of and offers the Diu Fort ramparts view as the fallback.

  • Three full days is enough, by design. Diu's old town is small; three days lets you see every major site at an unhurried pace without needing to pad the itinerary with repeat stops.

  • Photography. Generally permitted at the fort and old town exteriors; St. Paul's Church and the Diu Museum may restrict flash or tripod use, confirmed by your guide on the day.

  • Heat and shade. Diu Fort has little shade over its exposed ramparts; carry water and sun protection for the Day 2 morning.

  • Extending further. Nagoa Beach, the Naida Caves, Gangeshwar Temple and the INS Khukri Memorial are all close by if you want a slower, beach-inclusive finish beyond this heritage-led four days.

Itinerary (Day Wise)

You fly or drive from Ahmedabad to Diu. The flight is just over an hour, while the road trip takes most of the day. Once you've checked in, your local guide takes you on a gentle first walk through the old town, past pastel houses with wooden balconies. Day two is about the forts. You walk the ramparts of Diu Fort, where the old cannons still face the sea, then take a short boat ride out to Panikota, a small stone fort sitting right in the water. On day three you explore on foot. You'll see St. Paul's Church with its carved Baroque front, St. Thomas Church, which is now a small museum, and the painted Zampa Gateway, and wander the lanes of the old Portuguese quarter in between. Whatever time is left is yours for the beach. On day four you head back to Ahmedabad by air or road.

Day 1

AHMEDABAD TO DIU | INTO PORTUGAL'S OLD ISLAND

Route: Ahmedabad to Diu, by air about 1 hour 15 minutes, or by road about 360 km, 6.5 to 7 hours

Your guide meets you at Ahmedabad airport. From here, a short connecting flight is the fastest way onto the island itself, landing in time for an evening still ahead of you; where the flight schedule doesn't line up with your dates, the same journey by private car, about 360 km down the Saurashtra coast, is the practical alternative, with the day's sightseeing simply shifted to tomorrow.

Diu stayed under Portuguese rule for more than four centuries, from a 1535 treaty with Gujarat's Sultan Bahadur Shah to its liberation on 19 December 1961, the same year Goa and Daman were also freed. Check in, then take a first unhurried walk through the old town before dinner: narrow lanes, balconied houses, and church spires that look like nowhere else in Gujarat.

Experience of the Day

  • Airport pickup and connection to Diu

  • Check-in

  • First evening walk through the old town

Food

Recommended: Dinner at the hotel.

Must-Try: Goan-influenced Portuguese-era seafood, a genuine change from the rest of Gujarat's kitchen.

Activities to Do

  • Connect to Diu

  • Evening old-town walk

Day 2

DIU FORT AND THE FORT OF THE SEA | STONE BUILT TO HOLD THE HARBOUR

Route: Diu local, full day, including a boat crossing to Panikota

Diu Fort is where the day starts and where Diu's own story starts too. The Portuguese built it in 1535-36 under a treaty with Bahadur Shah, on a site granted for exactly this purpose; after the Sultan's death in 1537 the Portuguese held the island outright. The fort's outer wall runs along the coastline itself, with a tidal moat separating it from an inner wall carrying the gun bastions, three original gates, and a scatter of bronze cannons and iron shot still sitting where they were left. A lighthouse was added later at one corner; it is still a working aid to navigation today.

In the afternoon, a short boat crossing reaches Panikota, the Fort of the Sea, built out in the water about a mile offshore and shaped, from above, like a ship. It served as a jail in the Portuguese period, and still holds a small chapel built for the protection of sailors and a tunnel inside its basement that locals describe as running back toward the shore, though it has never been fully explored or confirmed.

Note: The Panikota boat crossing depends on sea and tide conditions on the day; your guide confirms the morning of, and offers the fort's exterior view from the Diu Fort ramparts as the fallback if the crossing isn't running.

Experience of the Day

  • Diu Fort ramparts, bastions and lighthouse

  • Bronze cannons and the old gun positions

  • Boat crossing to Panikota, the Fort of the Sea

Food

Recommended: Lunch at a Diu Fort-area restaurant.

Must-Try: Dinner in town: a Kathiyawadi thali, for contrast with last night's seafood.

Activities to Do

Diu Fort, full morning

Panikota boat crossing, afternoon

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • A longer walk along the fort's sea-facing wall at sunset

Day 3

CHURCHES AND THE OLD TOWN | DIU'S COLONIAL QUARTER ON FOOT

Route: Diu local, full day, on foot through the old town

St. Paul's Church is Diu's largest and best-known church, built by the Jesuits in 1600 and reconstructed in 1807; it is still in active use. The facade is counted among the most elaborate Baroque church fronts anywhere in India, and the carved woodwork inside is just as detailed, among the finest surviving in any Portuguese-built church in the country.

A short walk away, St. Thomas Church, Gothic in style with a whitewashed exterior, now holds the Diu Museum: stone inscriptions, wooden carvings, old idols, and faded portraits and paintings from the Portuguese period, on the same walls where they were likely always meant to hang. The old town's main gate, the Zampa Gateway, is built from a distinctive red brick, carved with lions and priestly figures and, unusually, an 18th-century chapel built directly into the gate structure itself. The rest of the afternoon is an unscheduled walk through the Portuguese quarter's own streets: balconied houses, faded pastel facades, and street corners that still carry their old Portuguese names.

Experience of the Day

  • St. Paul's Church

  • St. Thomas Church and the Diu Museum

  • Zampa Gateway

  • Free walk through the old Portuguese quarter

Food

Recommended: Lunch at an old-town café.

Must-Try: Dinner at the hotel: a final Gujarati-Portuguese fusion plate, where the kitchen offers one.

Shopping

The old town's small shops for Portuguese-era tilework reproductions and local cashew feni, where legally sold.

Activities to Do

  • St. Paul's Church

  • St. Thomas Church / Diu Museum

  • Zampa Gateway

  • Old town walk

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • A sunset return to the Diu Fort ramparts, this time without the morning's crowd

Day 4

DIU TO AHMEDABAD | DEPARTURE

Route: Diu to Ahmedabad, by air about 1 hour 15 minutes, or by road about 360 km, 6.5 to 7 hours

Book onward or international flights with enough margin for the Diu-Ahmedabad connection, whichever way you're travelling it, plus the usual buffer for an international check-in at Ahmedabad.

Four days, one small island, and four centuries of Portuguese building left standing in a corner of Gujarat most itineraries drive straight past on their way to the beach.

Experience of the Day

  • Free morning, if the connection timing allows

  • Transfer to Diu airport or departure by road

  • Onward or international departure from Ahmedabad

Food

Recommended: Breakfast at the hotel.

Must-Try: A last cup of masala chai before the transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Diu: Portugal's Last Indian Colony Heritage Walk

We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.

Is this a genuine diu portuguese colony tour international travellers can book as a standalone trip?

Yes. Diu's colonial old town gets three full dedicated days here, with Ahmedabad used only for the connection in and out. In BizareXpedition's other nine live Diu-inclusive products, Diu is always one stop paired with a beach day or a Gir safari; here it is the whole trip.

How long was Diu actually under Portuguese rule?

From a 1535 treaty with Gujarat's Sultan Bahadur Shah, with full Portuguese control following the Sultan's death in 1537, to liberation on 19 December 1961 — well over four centuries.

What makes this a diu colonial heritage walk rather than a beach trip with a fort stop added on?

The itinerary and guide briefing are built around Diu Fort, Panikota, St. Paul's Church, St. Thomas Church and the Zampa Gateway, with the beach left out of the core itinerary entirely and offered only as a stated extension

Do we fly or drive to Diu?

Either, depending on the day's flight schedule. The daily Ahmedabad-Diu connection, about 1h15, is the default; the roughly 360 km, 6.5 to 7 hour road transfer is the disclosed alternative when flight timing doesn't work for your dates.

Is this a genuine diu fort church tour, with real access to the sites?

Yes. Diu Fort, St. Paul's Church, St. Thomas Church (now the Diu Museum) and the Zampa Gateway are all open to visitors; the Panikota crossing depends on sea conditions on the day, with the fort's ramparts offered as a fallback view.

Is alcohol available on this trip?

Yes. Diu, unlike mainland Gujarat, permits alcohol; it is a separate joint Union Territory with Dadra and Nagar Haveli, administered apart from Gujarat state.

What is the Zampa Gateway?

The old town's main entrance, built from red brick and carved with lions and priestly figures, with an 18th-century chapel built directly into the gate structure itself.

Is Panikota accessible to visit?

By a short boat crossing, weather and tide permitting. It was built about a mile offshore, shaped like a ship, and served as a jail during the Portuguese period; it holds a small chapel and a basement tunnel local tradition says runs back toward the shore, though that has never been confirmed.

Is a guide necessary for this trip?

Strongly recommended. Diu's old town has limited on-site signage; a guide briefed specifically on the Portuguese-period history of each building makes the difference between walking past a church facade and understanding what you're looking at.

What is the accommodation like in Diu?

Azzaro Resorts & Ganga Spa is Diu's only 5-star property, used at the Ultra-Luxury tier. Radhika Beach Resort and Kohinoor Hotel cover the Luxury and Premium tiers respectively.

How much does the tour cost?

This 4-day tour costs about Rs.96,642 to Rs.104,373 per couple at the Premium tier, or Rs.48,321 to Rs.52,186 per person. Luxury is Rs.123,354 to Rs.133,222 per couple and Ultra-Luxury Rs.165,942 to Rs.179,217. Figures are indicative.
