About

This is an 8-day private birdwatching tour of Gujarat, India, with a specialist birding guide at every stop. It covers three very different habitats: the Nal Sarovar wetland for pelicans and flamingos, the Little Rann of Kutch salt desert for flamingos and cranes, and Velavadar grassland, home to one of India's best winter harrier roosts. Prices start at about INR 118,300 per person (twin sharing).

Every winter, huge numbers of birds fly south from Central Asia and Siberia to escape the cold. Gujarat, on India's dry western edge, is one of the places they land. Its lakes fill with pelicans and ducks, its salt flats turn pink with flamingos, and its grasslands come alive at dusk as hundreds of harriers drop in to roost.

Gujarat is still overlooked by most birders, who tend to head for Bharatpur or the Himalayan foothills. That's good news for you: fewer crowds, open landscapes and some truly special sightings.

This trip links Gujarat's three best birding habitats into one easy loop of about 685 km. It isn't a wildlife safari with a few birds added on. Each outing is timed for the birds, not the drive: sunrise on the water, dawn on the salt flats, dusk at the roost.

WHY BOOK THIS WITH BIZAREXPEDITION

A 7-night Gujarat birding itinerary, planned and run by BizareXpedition from start to finish.

  • Three habitats, one loop. Freshwater wetland at Nal Sarovar, salt desert at the Little Rann, and grassland at Velavadar, with no route repeated.

  • A birding guide throughout. Each day lists the species to look for, the best time of day and the season's pattern, not just a drive and a stop.

  • Built around roosts and light, not distance. The Nal Sarovar boat goes out at sunrise, and the Velavadar days end at the harrier roost at dusk.

  • No live product covers this circuit. Nal Sarovar, the Little Rann and Velavadar are each absent from BizareXpedition's current catalogue on their own. This trip is a genuine first for the specialist birder.

  • Estimated legs are flagged, not hidden. Two short road links (Nal Sarovar to Dasada, and Velavadar to Ahmedabad) are not individually documented and are stated as estimates.

  • A registered company, not a middleman. BizareXpedition Services Pvt. Ltd. (CIN U63090UR2016PTC007433), headquartered in Haridwar, plans and runs the trip itself.

PRACTICAL NOTES

  • Estimated road legs. Nal Sarovar to Dasada and Velavadar to Ahmedabad are not individually documented distances and are estimated by combining the surrounding road network. Your driver confirms the exact route and time on the day.

  • Boat safety at Nal Sarovar. Country boats are basic. Life jackets are not always standard issue; ask your guide to confirm before boarding, and avoid standing in the boat.

  • Safari rules. Stay seated in the vehicle, keep voices low and follow the forest guide. Do not call or approach animals. Tripod, monopod and seating rules are set by the forest department and confirmed at booking.

  • Velavadar access. The park is entered by your own vehicle with a compulsory forest guide, and is open 6:30 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 to 6:30 pm.

  • Kit. Binoculars, a spotting scope if you have one, a 400 to 600 mm lens if you photograph, a beanbag, layers for cold mornings, a hat and neutral clothing. Dust is heavy on the Rann and at Velavadar.

  • Safety. You travel in a private car with a driver, and every lodge is confirmed before you arrive. Use bottled water and keep valuables in the safe.

  • Alcohol. Gujarat is a dry state. Foreign visitors can get a free temporary tourist permit, usually within about a day.

  • Sightings. Birds move with weather, tide and season. The guide works the best-known sites and times, but nothing is guaranteed.

  • Connectivity. Mobile data works in cities. Signal is weak at Dasada and Velavadar.

  • Food. Gujarat is largely vegetarian. Non-vegetarian food is easiest to find at the larger hotels.

Itinerary (Day Wise)

Every winter, huge numbers of birds fly south from Central Asia and Siberia, and many of them land in Gujarat. Most birders still head for Bharatpur instead, which means quieter sites and wide open views for you. This 8-day private trip links Gujarat’s three best birding habitats in one easy loop, with a specialist birding guide at every stop. You start with a sunrise boat ride on Nal Sarovar, a Ramsar wetland full of pelicans, flamingos and storks. Then you spend two days on the salt flats of the Little Rann of Kutch, looking for flamingos and cranes, with wild ass roaming nearby and a chance to meet the Agariya salt workers. After a stop in Bhavnagar for the Nilambag Palace, you finish at Velavadar, where thousands of blackbuck graze and, at dusk, marsh, pallid and Montagu’s harriers drop in to roost. Each outing is timed for the birds, not the drive, and on the last day you and your guide put together your trip species list.

Route: Arrive Ahmedabad airport, transfer to hotel, about 20 km

Your driver meets you at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Nothing is planned today. In the evening your birding guide briefs you on the three wetland and grassland habitats ahead, and on the species most worth watching for at each.

Your guide goes through the kit worth carrying: binoculars, a spotting scope if you have one, a field guide or app, a 400 to 600 mm lens if you photograph, and neutral-coloured clothing for the hides and boats.

Day 2

AHMEDABAD TO DASADA, VIA NAL SAROVAR | A WETLAND AT DAWN, SALT DESERT BY EVENING

Route: Ahmedabad to Nal Sarovar, about 64 to 69 km, then on to Dasada, about 110 km (estimated)

Leave before first light for Nal Sarovar, a Ramsar wetland of 120.82 sq km about an hour west of Ahmedabad. It was declared a sanctuary in 1969 and holds more than 250 wetland bird species. Go out on a country boat at sunrise, when rosy pelicans, flamingos, white storks, brahminy ducks and herons are at their most active among the lake's 36 small islands.

Boat rates are posted at the gate, and your guide arranges one for you. Allow two to three hours on and around the water before the midday heat sets in.

From Nal Sarovar, drive on to Dasada, on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. The direct road between the two is not well documented, so your driver confirms the best route and time on the day; allow the better part of the afternoon. You reach Dasada in time for a late safari if the light holds, or settle in for the evening.

Note: The Nal Sarovar to Dasada distance given here is an estimate built from the surrounding road network, not a single sourced figure. Your driver confirms the exact route and time before departure.

Species to Look For

  • Rosy pelican and greater and lesser flamingo at Nal Sarovar

  • White stork, brahminy duck, purple moorhen and herons

  • Crakes and waders at the lake's edge

Experience of the Day

  • Sunrise boat safari at Nal Sarovar

  • Drive to the edge of the Little Rann

  • Settling in at Dasada

Activities to Do

  • Nal Sarovar boat safari

Day 3

LITTLE RANN OF KUTCH | FLAMINGOS, CRANES AND THE SALT DESERT

Route: Little Rann sanctuary, local, about 80 km in safari

The Little Rann of Kutch is better known for the Indian wild ass, but its wetter patches hold large numbers of flamingos, cranes and pelicans in winter, alongside raptors hunting over the open flats. The sanctuary covers about 4,954 sq km and was set up in 1972.

The dawn safari works the flats and the shallow pans, where flamingos and cranes feed before the heat builds. Your guide also watches the ground for harriers, and the bushes for sandgrouse and larks.

The afternoon safari goes to a different sector. Salt workers known as Agariyas live and work on the flats in the dry months, and a stop to see the salt pans is part of the day if your guide judges the birds are settled elsewhere.

Note: The Little Rann sanctuary is closed during the monsoon. October and November are reported as a strong window, and birding continues to peak through winter into February.

The Human Story

The Agariya salt workers spend months on the salt in difficult conditions. A brief, respectful stop acknowledges the work without getting in its way.

Species to Look For

  • Greater and lesser flamingo

  • Common and demoiselle crane

  • Harriers hunting over the flats

  • Sandgrouse, larks and pipits

  • Indian wild ass and chinkara, seen alongside the birds

Experience of the Day

  • Dawn safari on the Little Rann

  • Salt pan visit with the Agariyas

  • Afternoon safari in a second sector

Food

Recommended: Lunch at your lodge.

Must-Try: Kathiawadi thali.

Activities to Do

  • Dawn safari

  • Salt pan visit

  • Afternoon safari

Day 4

DASADA TO BHAVNAGAR | ACROSS SAURASHTRA TO THE COAST

Route: Dasada to Bhavnagar, about 246 km, 5 hours by road

Take a short early safari before breakfast, then set out for Bhavnagar. The road runs south-east across Saurashtra, through Surendranagar district and down to the Gulf of Khambhat coast.

You arrive in the mid-afternoon. Bhavnagar is the former capital of a princely state, and the Gaurishankar Lake in the middle of town is worth a short stop if time allows: it holds herons, egrets and the occasional pelican even outside the main parks.

Species to Look For

Herons and egrets at Gaurishankar Lake, a city-centre stop

Experience of the Day

  • Final morning on the Little Rann

  • Drive to the Gulf of Khambhat coast

  • Evening at Gaurishankar Lake

Food

Recommended: Dinner at your hotel.

Must-Try: Bhavnagari gathiya, a fried gram-flour snack, from a local shop.

Activities to Do

  • Early safari

  • Drive to Bhavnagar

  • Gaurishankar Lake

Day 5

BHAVNAGAR TO VELAVADAR | INTO THE GRASSLAND

Route: Bhavnagar city, then Velavadar, about 45 km, 1 to 1.5 hours

Spend the morning in Bhavnagar. The Nilambag Palace, a 19th-century palace of the former rulers, is the main sight, and your guide confirms what is open.

After lunch, drive about 45 km to Velavadar. The Blackbuck National Park was set up in 1976 and covers 34.08 sq km of grassland, scrub and saline flats along the Gulf of Khambhat. It is better known for blackbuck and wolves, but it is also one of the best winter harrier roosts in India.

You enter in your own vehicle with a compulsory forest guide. The park is open from 6:30 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 to 6:30 pm. The afternoon safari sets you up for the evening harrier roost.

Note: Velavadar is closed from mid-June to mid-October because of monsoon flooding. November to March is the best time for both mammals and birds.

Species to Look For

  • Marsh, pallid and Montagu's harriers coming in to roost

  • Short-eared owl, occasionally seen at dusk

  • Larks, pipits and sandgrouse on the grass

  • Blackbuck and the Indian wolf, seen alongside the birds

Experience of the Day

  • Nilambag Palace, Bhavnagar

  • Afternoon safari at Velavadar

  • Evening harrier watch

Food

Recommended: Dinner at your Velavadar lodge.

Must-Try: Simple Gujarati meal.

Activities to Do

  • Bhavnagar morning

  • Drive to Velavadar

  • Afternoon safari and harrier watch

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • Takhteshwar Temple, a hill temple with views over Bhavnagar

Day 6

VELAVADAR | A FULL DAY IN THE GRASS

Route: Velavadar Blackbuck National Park, local

The dawn safari is for larks, pipits and open-country raptors, and for blackbuck at their most active. The grass is at its best in the low early light.

The midday break is at the lodge. In the afternoon, go back out and end at the harrier roost, when birds that have hunted across the district all day come in to settle in the grass together. Several hundred can gather on a good evening in peak winter.

The lesser florican, a rare bustard, is reported here, but it breeds in the monsoon when the park is closed, so it is not a winter target.

Species to Look For

  • Harrier roost at dusk, the signature sighting at Velavadar

  • Blackbuck in display

  • Wolf, with luck

  • Sandgrouse and larks through the day

Experience of the Day

  • Dawn safari

Must-Try: Bajra rotla and local vegetables.

Activities to Do

  • Dawn safari

  • Afternoon safari

  • Evening roost watch

Day 7

VELAVADAR TO AHMEDABAD | BACK TO THE CITY

Route: Velavadar to Ahmedabad, about 160 km (estimated), 3.5 to 4 hours by road

Take a last dawn safari, then breakfast and the drive back to Ahmedabad. You arrive in the early afternoon.

The afternoon is free. Your guide compiles the trip's species list with you. If you would like one more wetland, Thol Bird Sanctuary, about 40 km north-west of the city, can be added as a late-afternoon extension on request.

Note: The Velavadar to Ahmedabad distance is estimated. Your driver confirms the exact route and time on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Gujarat Birdwatching Specialist Tour

We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.

How many days do you need for a Gujarat birding tour?

Seven nights and eight days covers Nal Sarovar, the Little Rann and Velavadar at a steady specialist pace, without repeating a road. The loop is about 685 km, with the longest single drive at about 246 km.

What is the best time of year for birding in Gujarat?

November to February, when migratory numbers peak at Nal Sarovar and the Little Rann, and the Velavadar harrier roost is at its fullest. Birds start arriving from October, and Velavadar and the Little Rann sanctuary are both closed in the monsoon.

What makes this a gujarat birding tour international travellers can rely on?

It pairs a birding guide with you at every stop, times each outing to the species' active hours rather than to driving convenience, and gives honest season and distance information, including the two road legs that are estimated rather than individually sourced.

What is special about Nal Sarovar?

It is a 120.82 sq km Ramsar wetland about an hour from Ahmedabad, with more than 250 recorded bird species. A sunrise boat safari among its 36 small islands is the best way to see rosy pelicans, flamingos and storks.

Can I see flamingos on this nal sarovar little rann velavadar birding tour?

Yes, at both Nal Sarovar and the Little Rann of Kutch. Numbers and locations shift with water levels and season, so your guide checks current conditions before each outing.

What is the Velavadar harrier roost?

In winter, marsh, pallid and Montagu's harriers that have hunted across the district through the day gather at dusk to roost together in the grass at Velavadar. Several hundred birds can be present on a good evening.

Will I also see mammals on this trip?

Yes, alongside the birds. The Little Rann has the Indian wild ass and chinkara, and Velavadar has blackbuck and, with luck, the Indian wolf. The trip is built around birds, but these sightings come as part of the same safaris.

Is this trip suitable for a beginner birder?

Yes. Your guide briefs you before each outing, points out species as they appear, and keeps a trip species list with you. Bring binoculars and a field guide or app if you have one.

Can I add Thol Bird Sanctuary?

Yes. Thol is about 40 km north-west of Ahmedabad and can be added as a late-afternoon extension on Day 7 on request, outside the base inclusions.

Is a tripod allowed on the safaris?

Rules are set by the forest department and can vary by park and vehicle. We confirm before departure and do not promise either. A beanbag on the door frame works well for jeep safaris.

How much does the Gujarat birding tour cost?

This 8-day trip costs about Rs.236,628 to Rs.255,558 per couple at the Premium tier, or Rs.118,314 to Rs.127,779 per person. Luxury is Rs.309,582 to Rs.334,349 per couple and Ultra-Luxury Rs.432,558 to Rs.467,163. Figures are indicative and vary by date and availability.
