About

This is a private 8-day Karnataka Kerala wildlife tour. You spend seven nights in or beside four of South India's best forests, Bandipur, Nagarhole (Kabini), Wayanad and Periyar, with jeep safaris, boat safaris and a naturalist at every stop. Tigers and leopards are possible but never guaranteed; elephants, gaur, deer and birds are seen on most outings. It costs from about INR 155,106 per person (twin sharing).

Most people picture North India when they think of tigers. But the forests of South India's Western Ghats hold one of the largest wild elephant populations in Asia, healthy numbers of tigers and leopards, packs of wild dogs and hundreds of bird species, often with far fewer safari vehicles around.

This trip is built for people who come to India to see wild animals. You stay close to the forest, head out at dawn when animals are most active, and spend your days with naturalists who know the tracks, calls and habits of every creature in their reserve. Bandipur, Nagarhole and Wayanad form one continuous forest. Periyar, further south, adds a peaceful lake where elephants come down to drink.

We never promise a tiger or a leopard. Both are seen on many safaris, and not on others. Elephants, gaur, deer, wild dogs and many birds are seen far more often. The plan allows several safaris so that the chance improves, and your naturalist explains what to look for.

Who This Wildlife Tour Is For

  • Wildlife lovers who would rather be in a jeep at sunrise than in a museum

  • Wildlife photographers looking for elephants at the water's edge, big cats on forest tracks and golden evening light on the Kabini

  • Birdwatchers: kingfishers, storks, fish eagles and many forest species are seen throughout

  • Couples and families who enjoy nature and do not mind rising at 5 am

  • Repeat visitors to India who have seen the famous North Indian tiger parks and want something different

It is not ideal for travellers who want guaranteed tiger sightings, late mornings or lots of cultural sightseeing. We are open about that from the start.

Karnataka Kerala Wildlife Tour - Four Reserves at a Glance

Tigers and Leopards: Honest Expectations

We never promise a tiger or a leopard. Both are seen on many safaris here, and missed on others. That is the nature of a wild forest. What you will very likely see are wild elephants, gaur (Indian bison), spotted and sambar deer, langurs and a wide variety of birds, with a real chance of wild dogs and, occasionally, a sloth bear.

To give you the best possible odds, the plan includes several safaris across different reserves, all timed for early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active. Your naturalist explains what to look and listen for, from alarm calls to fresh tracks. Kabini is also known for occasional reports of a rare black leopard, but it is very seldom seen.

The Reserves You Will Explore

Bandipur: the classic tiger reserve

Bandipur lies in the foothills of the Nilgiri range and is part of one continuous forest with Nagarhole, Mudumalai and Wayanad. Its dry deciduous forest of teak and open grassland makes animals easier to spot. Elephants, gaur and spotted deer are common, and a tiger or leopard may cross your path. You arrive the evening before, meet your naturalist for a briefing, and head out on safari at dawn.

Nagarhole and Kabini: elephants at the water

Kabini, on the edge of Nagarhole National Park, is one of the most rewarding wildlife destinations in South India. On the dawn jeep safari, you search waterholes and forest tracks for big cats and herds of elephant, gaur and sambar. In the afternoon, a boat glides along the Kabini backwaters as animals gather at the shore in the golden light. In the dry months from March to May, elephants gather here in large herds. Wild dogs, sloth bears, kingfishers, storks and fish eagles are also possible.

Wayanad: forest, plantations and ancient carvings

Wayanad is a high plateau of coffee, tea, pepper and forest, the Kerala part of the same forest belt as Bandipur and Nagarhole. You stay on a working plantation in the north of the district. A dawn jeep safari at Tholpetty offers chances to see elephants, gaur, deer and birds, with a tiger or leopard always possible. Later, a steep climb leads to the Edakkal Caves, where Stone Age carvings decorate a split in the rock high above the hills.

Periyar: a lake in the Cardamom Hills

Periyar Tiger Reserve is a separate forest further south in the Cardamom Hills. Its lake was created in 1895 when a dam was built across the river. On the first boat of the morning, you watch for elephants drinking at the shore, along with gaur, sambar deer, wild boar and many birds. A guided walk with a naturalist and a visit to a spice garden round off your final full day.

After breakfast, visit the Edakkal Caves, near Ambalavayal. They are two chambers in a split rock, high on a hill, with carvings made by people of the New Stone Age, thousands of years ago. The climb takes about 20 minutes, with a steep

flight of steps, and gives a wide view of the hills. Spend the late afternoon on a guided walk on the estate, or rest at the resort.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Karnataka Kerala Wildlife Tour

We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.

How many days do you need for a Karnataka Kerala wildlife tour?

Eight days is enough to cover Bandipur, Nagarhole, Wayanad and Periyar with several safaris. This plan gives one night at Bandipur, and two each at Kabini, Wayanad and Periyar. With two more days, add a night at Kabini or a break night between Wayanad and Periyar.

Can you see tigers on this trip?

Tigers live in all four reserves, but sightings are never certain. Many safaris see none. Leopards, elephants, gaur, wild dogs and birds are seen far more often. The plan has several safaris to improve the chance, and we never promise a tiger.

What is the best time for a Bandipur Nagarhole Wayanad trip?

November to May is the best time. The forest is dry, and animals come to the water. April and May are the hottest, and often the best for seeing animals at Kabini. June to September is the monsoon, when rain, leeches and thick forest make safaris poor.

What is the south India wildlife corridor?

It is the belt of connected forest across the Nilgiri hills, joining Bandipur and Nagarhole in Karnataka, Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala. It holds one of the largest populations of wild elephants in Asia. Periyar lies further south, in a separate reserve in the Cardamom Hills.

Is this a good wildlife corridor trip for foreigners?

Yes, if you enjoy early starts and time in the forest. Each stop has a naturalist, and the hotels stand in or beside the forest. The drives are long on Days 1 and 6, and short in between.

How long is the drive from Wayanad to Periyar?

The drive from Wayanad to Periyar is about 350 km and takes about 8 to 9 hours with stops. Online maps often show about 5 to 6 hours, but busy plain roads and a final climb make the day longer. We leave by 7 am. A break night at Thrissur or Munnar can be added.

Which airports do we use?

You fly into Bengaluru (BLR) and out of Kochi (COK). Choose an arrival at Bengaluru before about noon, so you reach Bandipur before dark. From Kochi, choose a flight that leaves after about 2 pm, so you have time for the drive from Periyar.

Are the safaris private?

The vehicles and naturalists are arranged for you, but the reserves are run by the forest departments, and safari seats, zones and timings follow their rules. In some places the vehicle is shared with other visitors. We book what is available, and tell you before you travel.

How much does an 8-day Karnataka Kerala wildlife tour cost?

This 8-day trip costs about Rs.310,212 to Rs.335,029 per couple in the Premium room tier, about Rs.380,772 to Rs.411,234 for Luxury, and about Rs.526,932 to Rs.569,087 for Ultra-Luxury. Prices include the four hotels, vehicle, naturalists, safari permits and GST. International flights are not included.

Do we need a visa for India?

Yes. Most nationalities can apply for an Indian e-Visa online before travel. Check which airports accept e-Visa arrivals for your nationality, and apply at least a week ahead on the official e-Visa site.

Can we add Mudumalai, Munnar or an Alleppey houseboat?

Yes. Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu lies beside Bandipur and fits as an extra night. Munnar fits as a break between Wayanad and Periyar. A houseboat night at Alleppey fits at the end, near Kochi. Tell us your dates and we will price the extra nights.
