Network and Connectivity

The network and connectivity in Kedarnath are not very good. This is because Kedarnath is located high up in the Himalayas and the roads are not easy to travel on. You will not get a mobile signal. A few companies like BSNL and sometimes Jio have basic connectivity near the temple. The internet is very slow. You can not make video calls. Watch videos online. As you walk from Gaurikund to Kedarnath the network and connectivity in Kedarnath get even worse. There are places where you will not get any signal at all. It is an idea to tell your family about your plans before you go. You should also download any information on your phone so you can use it offline. Do not rely on your mobile phone for connectivity in Kedarnath during your journey. The network and connectivity in Kedarnath are just not reliable.

Parking and Vehicle Restriction

Private vehicles are allowed till the Sonprayag. So for those who want to do the Kedarnath Yatra by trek  then have to reach the Gaurikund basecamp. From Sonprayag, have to take shuttle taxi which cost around 50-60 rupees per person.  From there you have to take shuttle services to get to Gaurikund, which is where your trek starts. The parking areas are well-managed. They can get very crowded during peak Kedarnath Yatra days. So it is always better to get up early. If you plan this in advance you will save yourself a lot of stress.

Helicopter vs Trek – Which One Should You Choose?

There are two options: you can take a helicopter or you can trek. The choice depends on what you want. Comfort or a deeper connection.

  • Helicopters are best for citizens and people who do not have a lot of time. It is quick and comfortable. It takes a hours and you do not have to put in a lot of effort.

  • Trek is best for people who want to have an adventure and a spiritual experience. It is an emotional journey. It takes 6-10 hours. It is physically demanding.

  • You have to choose between the two based on what you're looking for. The Kedarnath trek is challenging. It is also very rewarding.

Kedarnath Trek Difficulty Level

The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is 16 km long. It is moderately challenging. But those who are physically and medically fit can complete the trek within 7-8 hours easily, even beginners can do it. You have to be in basic shape and you have to be determined. The path is well-paved. There are a lot of rest points, food stalls and support options like ponies or palkis. It is tough. Every step feels like it is worth it. It is advised to take check weather conditions, and follow the sops to complete the trek safely and try to avoid trekking on a rainy day.

Personal Expenses

Varies

Depends on food, shopping, tips, and other individual usage

Extra Expenses You Should Be Prepared For

These expenses are usually not included in the packages so it is a good idea to have some extra money set aside. This way you can stay stress-free during your Kedarnath Yatra.

VIP Darshan vs General Darshan

General darshan is free. It can take a long time during peak season. VIP darshan on the other hand allows you to get into the temple quickly with minimal waiting. If you are short on time or you are traveling with citizens, VIP darshan might be a good option.. Even the long wait in general darshan has its own spiritual charm.

Medical Facilities Available on Route

  • Medical Relief Posts: Set up around 25 medical relief camps along the route. These camps provide first aid and basic treatment to people who need it.

  • Health Screening Points: There are 33 health screening points where they check the pilgrims health. They monitor things like blood pressure and oxygen levels before and during the journey.

  • They have deployed around 400 staff along the routes.

  • 229 Specialist doctors are available on rotation during the Yatra season.

  • Hospital Facility at Kedarnath: There is a 17-bed hospital near the Kedarnath temple. This hospital handles emergencies and serious cases.

  • Ambulance Services: They have around 177 ambulances. These include road ambulances, air ambulances like helicopters and other emergency transport services.

  • High-Altitude Care: They have oxygen cylinders and oxygen-equipped beds. This is because the oxygen levels are low at altitudes.

  • Advanced Care: There are limited ICU beds, a blood bank and emergency care units at locations on the route.

  • Monitoring: The Medical Relief Posts advise pilgrims to monitor their oxygen levels and blood pressure. They should also consult doctors regularly. This is because of the risks like oxygen, extreme cold and high altitude during the Yatra.

  • Medical Relief Posts encourage pilgrims to register on health portals like e-Swasthya Dham. This helps with tracking and safety updates, for the Medical Relief Posts and the pilgrims.

Fitness Tips Before the Yatra

  • To get ready for your Kedarnath Yatra you should start preparing at least 2-3 weeks before you go.

  • Do cardio exercises like walking or jogging or climbing stairs.

  • Stamina is the key to completing the trek without quitting.

  • Do 30-45 minutes of walking daily,  so your body gets used to walking distances.

  • Keep your body hydrated on trek.

  • Stop smoking and drinking alcohol a few weeks before the Yatra because that will help your body get more oxygen.

  • Practice some breathing exercises so your lungs handle the altitude better.

  • Take  frequent breaks, don’t push your body too much. When body say stop, take rest, because it’s not a race.

Dehradun to Kedarnath Distance

The distance from Dehradun to Kedarnath Temple is 220-230 km by road till Sonprayag and then you have to trek 16 km from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. The whole journey takes around 8-10 hours by road. 6-8 Hours, for the trek depending on how fast you walk and the weather.
