About
The Modhera Sun Temple and Rani ki Vav tour is a private 3-day trip from Ahmedabad to two of Gujarat's greatest 11th-century monuments. You visit the Sun Temple at Modhera, the UNESCO-listed Rani ki Vav stepwell in Patan, and a family workshop weaving the famous Patan Patola silk, with an architecture specialist guide. Prices start at about ₹31,689 per person.
Around a thousand years ago, the Solanki kings of Gujarat built some of the most beautiful stone monuments in India. Two of them still stand within an hour's drive of each other: a temple dedicated to the sun god at Modhera, and a giant stepwell at Patan built by a queen in memory of her husband.
Rani ki Vav is so admired that it appears on the back of India's ₹100 note. The Sun Temple is built so that, around the equinoxes, the first rays of sunrise reach deep into its inner sanctum. Neither looks like anything you'll see in Europe or East Asia, and both are surprisingly quiet compared with India's better-known sights.
This short private tour shows you both, properly, with a guide who knows the stories behind the carvings. You'll also meet one of the last families weaving Patan's legendary Patola silk, and explore Ahmedabad, India's first UNESCO World Heritage City, where you stay.
Modhera Sun Temple: What Makes It Special
The Sun Temple at Modhera was built in 1026 CE by King Bhimdev I of the Solanki dynasty, who believed his family descended from the sun god, Surya. Even without its original idol, it's one of the most complete and beautiful temples of its age in western India.
Built for the sun. The temple faces east. Around the spring and autumn equinoxes, sunrise light travels straight through the halls into the inner sanctum.
Surya Kund. A huge stepped water tank in front of the temple, lined with more than a hundred small shrines. It's one of the most photographed spots in Gujarat.
Sabha Mandapa. The pillared assembly hall, carved with scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Its 52 pillars are said to represent the 52 weeks of the year.
Living heritage. Each January, the temple hosts the Modhera Dance Festival, with classical Indian dance performed against the lit-up stone.
Rani ki Vav: The Queen's Stepwell
Rani ki Vav (the Queen's Stepwell) in Patan was built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband, the same King Bhimdev I who built Modhera. It's designed like an upside-down temple, with seven levels of steps leading down to the water.
Over 1,500 sculptures. More than 500 main sculptures and over a thousand smaller ones, many showing the ten avatars of Vishnu.
Lost and found. Floods from the Saraswati River buried the stepwell in silt for centuries. Archaeologists uncovered it in the 1980s, which is why the carvings are so well preserved.
UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
On India's ₹100 note. Since 2018, the lavender ₹100 note has shown Rani ki Vav on the back. Ask your guide for one to hold up at the site.
Patan Patola: A Thousand-Year-Old Weave
Patan is also home to Patola, a rare silk fabric made with a technique called double ikat. Each thread is tied and dyed in exact patterns before weaving, so the design appears perfectly on both sides. It's slow, precise work. A single sari can take months to complete.
On this tour, you visit the Salvi family, one of the very last families still practising this craft. You'll see the looms, the dyeing process and finished pieces up close.
Good to know
Patola saris are made to order, not sold off the shelf, and waiting times can be long. You can place an order directly with the family if you wish, but please don't expect to take one home on the day.
What You'll Experience
We don't publish a day-by-day plan here, but this is what your three days cover.
Ahmedabad's old city
Your guide meets you at the airport. Later, you walk through Ahmedabad's walled old city to see the carved stone 'tree of life' window at Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, the 15th-century Jama Masjid, and the gated neighbourhoods called pols.
A full day at Modhera and Patan
This is the heart of the trip. You drive about 95 km to Modhera for the Sun Temple, then about 35 km on to Patan for Rani ki Vav and the Patola workshop. Lunch is a Gujarati thali in Patan. You're back in Ahmedabad by evening.
A second stepwell
On your last morning, you visit Dada Harir Vav, a five-level stepwell from the late 15th century that few tourists find, and Bhadra Fort, where Ahmedabad began. Then it's time for your airport transfer.
ACCOMMODATION CATEGORIES

WHY BOOK THIS WITH BIZAREXPEDITION
A genuine gap in BizareXpedition's own catalogue, confirmed on both counts: neither Modhera nor Patan appears anywhere in the existing product list.
Two UNESCO-level sites, not one stop among many. This itinerary gives Modhera and Patan a full specialist day of their own, rather than folding either into a longer circuit where they'd be a single rushed stop.
Ahmedabad's own heritage, not just a gateway. The old city's 2017 UNESCO World Heritage City status, the Sidi Saiyyed jali and Dada Harir Vav all get genuine specialist attention, since this trip is built around architecture specifically.
Patola handled plainly, not oversold. The Salvi family's double-ikat weaving is the real draw, but a sari is made to order, not sold off the shelf; this itinerary says so plainly rather than promising a souvenir that doesn't exist.
A short, easy trip, not a padded one. Three focused days from a single Ahmedabad base, with no overnight away from the city's own full hotel range, exactly matching what this specialist subject properly needs.
A registered company, not a middleman. BizareXpedition Services Pvt. Ltd. (CIN U63090UR2016PTC007433), headquartered in Haridwar, plans and runs the trip itself.
SEASON ADJUSTMENTS
This is a properly year-round product: both Modhera and Patan are open-air and indoor stone monuments respectively, with no wildlife-style closure season to work around.
| Season | Window | Notes |
|---|---|---|
|
Equinox dates |
21 March, 21 September |
The two dates when Modhera's sunrise alignment is at its most precise; book these specifically if the astronomy angle is the main draw. |
|
Peak comfort season |
November to February |
Pleasant daytime temperatures for the Modhera-Patan day's several hours outdoors. |
|
Avoid where possible |
May and June |
Peak summer heat makes the open-air Surya Kund and stepwell descents considerably less comfortable, though the sites themselves stay open. |
Modhera Sun Temple & Rani ki Vav Season Adjustments
PRACTICAL NOTES
Modhera's equinox alignment is a real, dated event, not a year-round effect. The precise sunrise-on-the-idol alignment happens only around 21 March and 21 September; on any other date, the temple's architecture and carving are still the main draw, not the light show.
Patola is made to order, not bought off the shelf. The Salvi family's double-ikat weaving can take close to a hundred days per sari and is typically ordered with a significant wait; this trip includes the workshop visit, not a guaranteed souvenir.
Rani ki Vav's lower levels can flood seasonally. Access to the deepest levels of the stepwell depends on the groundwater table at the time of your visit; this is confirmed on the day rather than guaranteed year-round.
Patan and Mehsana's own hotel market is small and budget-level. This is exactly why this itinerary bases in Ahmedabad throughout rather than overnighting near the sites themselves; the ground team reconfirms Ahmedabad rates before every departure.
The Modhera-Patan day is a full day out, not a half-day add-on. Door to door, the loop covers roughly 260 km with substantial time at both sites; this itinerary schedules nothing else that day.
Gujarat is dry. Foreigners can apply for a free temporary tourist liquor permit; none of this trip's included meals involve alcohol as standard.
Dada Harir Vav draws a fraction of Rani ki Vav's visitors. That's the point of including it: a comparably fine five-level stepwell inside Ahmedabad itself, seen by a fraction of the people who visit its more famous Patan counterpart.
Extending the trip. A longer north Gujarat heritage circuit (Patan's Sahastralinga Talav ruins, Siddhpur's Rudra Mahalaya ruins and Bohra-community mansions) is a realistic addition for guests who want more of this specific architectural period.

Itinerary (Day Wise)
Your guide meets you at Ahmedabad airport. Later in the day you walk through the old walled city to see the carved stone tree-of-life window at Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, the Jama Masjid, and the old gated lanes called pols. The second day is the main one. You drive out to Modhera to see the Sun Temple and its stepped water tank, then go on to Patan for Rani ki Vav, the seven-level stepwell on the back of the ₹100 note. After a Gujarati thali lunch, you visit the Salvi family, one of the last families still weaving Patola silk by hand, and you're back in Ahmedabad by evening. On the last morning you see Dada Harir Vav, a quiet stepwell most visitors miss, and Bhadra Fort, before your transfer to the airport.
Day 1
ARRIVAL IN AHMEDABAD | THE OLD CITY'S OWN ARCHITECTURE, FIRST
Route: Arrival at Ahmedabad; evening old-city heritage walk
Your guide, a dedicated architecture specialist rather than a general sightseeing guide, meets you at Ahmedabad airport for the start of a modhera sun temple tour international architecture travellers have been researching for years without finding a BizareXpedition product to book: three days built entirely around Gujarat's own architectural masterpieces, with zero overlap anywhere in the existing catalogue.
The evening stays in Ahmedabad itself, since the old walled city, founded in 1411 by Ahmed Shah and inscribed in July 2017 as India's first UNESCO World Heritage City, is a genuine architectural specialist stop in its own right. A walk through the old city takes in the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque's famous jali, a stone lattice window carved into a 'tree of life' pattern so fine it's cited as the inspiration behind IIM Ahmedabad's own institutional emblem, and the Jama Masjid, where Jain lotus-flower carvings sit on the same domes as Hindu temple-bell motifs, a distinctly syncretic piece of 15th-century stonework.

Day 2
MODHERA AND PATAN | A SUN-ALIGNED TEMPLE, AND THE QUEEN OF STEPWELLS
Route: Ahmedabad to Modhera (about 92-98 km), Modhera to Patan (about 35 km), Patan to Ahmedabad (about 125 km)
The day's first stop is Modhera's Sun Temple, built in 1026 CE by the Solanki king Bhimdev I, whose dynasty traced its own descent from the sun. The temple is precisely aligned to the calendar, not just the compass: on the equinoxes, 21 March and 21 September, the first rays of sunrise fall directly on the sun idol inside the garbhagriha. The complex runs in three parts — the stepped Surya Kund tank, once ringed by some 108 shrines; the octagonal Sabha Mandapa, its 52 pillars standing for the 52 weeks of the solar year, carved with scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Krishna's own life; and the inner sanctum itself, carved with the twelve forms of Parvati and twelve solar aspects around an inverted-lotus plinth.
A short drive on to Patan brings a rani ki vav unesco tour in the most literal sense: Rani ki Vav, built around 1050 CE by Queen Udayamati in memory of her husband Bhimdev I, buried under Saraswati river silt for nearly seven centuries after the river shifted course in the 13th century, and excavated back to its original detail only in the late 1980s. Seven levels of steps descend like an inverted temple, carrying more than 500 major sculptures and a thousand minor ones; UNESCO inscribed it a World Heritage Site on 22 June 2014, and since July 2018 it has appeared on the back of India's lavender ₹100 note, the only stepwell with that particular distinction.
The afternoon closes with a patan stepwell tour for foreigners' other real draw: a visit to the Salvi family, the only family left weaving Patan's double-ikat Patola, a technique so exacting that a single sari can take close to a hundred days of dyeing and weaving combined.
Note: A single Patola sari cannot be bought off the shelf: the Salvi family works to order, with a wait that can run to two years, disclosed here plainly rather than left as a surprise at the workshop door.
Experience of the Day
Modhera Sun Temple: Surya Kund, Sabha Mandapa and the garbhagriha
Rani ki Vav: the seven-level stepwell and its carved galleries
Patan Patola weaving visit with the Salvi family
Food
Recommended: Lunch in Patan, a local Gujarati thali.
Must-Try: Dinner back in Ahmedabad.
Shopping
Patan Patola, by order only, not off the shelf; smaller local handicrafts are available more readily near both sites.
Activities to Do
Modhera Sun Temple visit
Rani ki Vav visit
Patan Patola weaving visit
Day 3
AHMEDABAD'S OWN STEPWELL, THEN DEPARTURE | A SECOND STEPWELL, QUIETLY OVERLOOKED
Route: Ahmedabad, local: Dada Harir Vav and Bhadra Fort; Ahmedabad airport, departure
A last morning stays inside Ahmedabad for a deliberate contrast: Dada Harir Vav, built in 1485-99 by Bai Harir Sultani, superintendent of the royal harem under Sultan Mahmud Begada, is a genuine five-level stepwell in its own right, carved in the same Solanki architectural idiom as Rani ki Vav but far less visited, with Persian and Sanskrit inscriptions standing side by side as a record of the city's own mixed history.
A last stop at Bhadra Fort and the old city's gates rounds out the architecture-and-astronomy trip before the transfer to the airport: three days spent entirely on buildings most visitors to Gujarat never see highlighted at all, closing where it started, in the old city itself.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Modhera Sun Temple & Rani ki Vav Architectural
We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.
Is this a genuine modhera sun temple tour international architecture travellers would plan a dedicated trip around?
Yes; it's built entirely around Modhera and Patan, with a dedicated specialist guide and genuine time at both sites, rather than a brief stop inside a longer Gujarat circuit.
What makes this a rani ki vav unesco tour worth booking specifically?
The real story, told properly: Queen Udayamati's grief-built stepwell, buried under river silt for seven centuries, excavated in the 1980s, and now the single stepwell on India's ₹100 note — not a five-minute photo stop.
Is this really a patan stepwell tour for foreigners, or could any serious architecture traveller book it?
Either; it's built with international travellers in mind, but the itinerary works the same way for any serious architecture or history traveller, domestic or international.
Will we see Modhera's equinox sunrise alignment?
Only if your dates fall on or near 21 March or 21 September, the two equinox dates; outside that window, the temple's architecture and carving remain the main draw, and this itinerary doesn't promise the light effect on other dates.
Can we buy a Patola sari on this trip?
Not off the shelf; the Salvi family works to order, often with a long wait, so this itinerary includes the workshop visit and the chance to place an order, not a guaranteed take-home souvenir.
Why does the itinerary spend time in Ahmedabad's own old city?
Because this is an architectural heritage specialist trip, and Ahmedabad's 2017 UNESCO World Heritage City old city, the Sidi Saiyyed jali and Dada Harir Vav are genuine stops in their own right, not filler around the Modhera-Patan day.
How far is Modhera and Patan from Ahmedabad?
Ahmedabad to Modhera is about 92-98 km, Modhera to Patan about 35 km, and Patan back to Ahmedabad about 125 km — a full day loop of roughly 260 km.
Do we need to stay overnight near Modhera or Patan?
No; this itinerary bases in Ahmedabad throughout, since Patan and Mehsana's own hotel markets are small and budget-level, and the full day loop is comfortably doable from Ahmedabad.
Is this trip suitable for a short visit to Gujarat?
Yes; at three days it's one of the shortest, most easily attached trips in BizareXpedition's catalogue, built to pair easily with a longer Rajasthan or Gujarat itinerary on either end.
What's the best time of year to visit?
Year-round, since both sites are stone monuments with no wildlife-style closure season; November to February gives the most comfortable daytime temperatures for the long Modhera-Patan day.
Can this be combined with a longer Gujarat circuit?
Yes; it's specifically designed as a low-cost, easy-to-attach addition to a longer Rajasthan, Kutch or central Gujarat itinerary.
How much does the tour cost?
This 3-day architectural specialist trip costs about Rs.63,378 to Rs.68,448 per couple at the Premium tier, or Rs.31,689 to Rs.34,224 per person. Luxury is Rs.87,192 to Rs.94,167 per couple and Ultra-Luxury Rs.124,488 to Rs.134,447. Figures are indicative.
