About

This is a private, 9-day tour to Munsiyari, a remote ridge town in eastern Kumaon that looks straight at the five snow summits of the Panchachuli peaks. Built for travellers who've already done the mainstream Himalayan circuits and want Kumaon's least-visited corner, it rides the Shatabdi Express from Delhi to Kathgodam, then splits the long 275 km mountain road into two easy days each way, with a night in Almora and two nights in Kausani bookending four full nights in Munsiyari itself. Along the way: a sunrise breakfast facing the peaks, the walk to Khaliya Top, a morning with a Johari Bhotia weaving family, and the Gandhi and Gita history of Kausani. A private guide, driver and vehicle travel with you throughout, in your choice of three tiers: Premium, Luxury and Ultra-Luxury.

Package Information

This Munsiyari tour package international guests can book is a journey to the end of a road. Munsiyari sits at about 2,200 m in eastern Kumaon, on a ridge that looks straight at the Panchachuli peaks, five summits between 6,334 and 6,904 m. It is a Panchachuli peaks view tour and a Kumaon last frontier trip for repeat Himalaya travellers who have seen the mainstream circuits and want the least-visited corner of Kumaon.

The route goes by train and road. The Shatabdi Express takes you from New Delhi to Kathgodam, and a private vehicle takes you to Almora for a night and then on to Munsiyari, about 275 km from Kathgodam and 10 hours of mountain road, split into two days. You stay four nights in Munsiyari, with a sunrise at the viewpoint, the walk to Khaliya Top, the Tribal Heritage Museum and a day with a Johari weaving household. You come back by Kausani for two nights on a ridge with its own view of the peaks. A private guide, driver and vehicle stay with you from Kathgodam, so this is a private Kumaon tour with no group and no set hour to be anywhere.

The culture is as much the point as the peaks. Munsiyari was a link in the old Indo-Tibetan trade route, and the Johari Bhotia, its people, were semi-nomadic traders and weavers of fine pashmina. The package is an offbeat Kumaon holiday that pairs a remote Himalayan journey with a slow return, priced as a tailor-made Kumaon Himalaya holiday in three tiers, Premium, Luxury and Ultra-Luxury. It is built for late September to November, when the air after the monsoon is at its clearest.

What to know before you book. Munsiyari is remote: about 275 km from Kathgodam, 10 to 12 hours by road, so we split the drive across two days and run it as a private journey. It has a handful of guest houses, and no ultra-luxury or five-star hotel, so we use the best available boutique stays and say so. The Shatabdi tickets must be booked early. The train leaves New Delhi at 6:20 am, so the plan starts with a night in Delhi, and the return reaches New Delhi at 8:55 pm.

Permits. Munsiyari town and the walk to Khaliya Top are covered by this plan. Milam and Ralam routes need an Inner Line Permit from the SDM office at Munsiyari with ITBP clearance, and rules for foreign guests on the frontier routes vary, so they are not part of this package. We confirm the position with the Pithoragarh administration before we quote anything beyond Munsiyari.

Temple access. In 2026 the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee resolved to bar non-Hindus from 47 temples in its charge. None of the places on this route was named in the reports we read, and we have not found a rule for the temples at Munsiyari and Bageshwar. We confirm the position for your dates before you travel.

WHY BOOK THIS WITH BIZAREXPEDITION

A road this long is worth it only when the days at the end of it are planned.

  • Uttarakhand is our home base. BizareXpedition™ Services Pvt. Ltd. (CIN U63090UR2016PTC007433) is headquartered in Haridwar, so the Kumaon roads, the guest houses and the drivers are known to us first-hand.

  • The long road is split. The 275 km from Kathgodam is two easy days and not one hard one, with a night in Almora, and the return has a night at Kausani.

  • Four nights, not one. Most visitors give Munsiyari a night on the way to somewhere else. Four nights gives you a sunrise, a mountain day, a culture day and a rest day.

  • Privacy is the plan. You have your own vehicle, your own guide and your own table at every meal. Nobody joins the car, and every evening is yours.

  • Three tiers, one route. The Premium, Luxury and Ultra-Luxury versions share the same route and the same guide standard. The tiers change the rooms, the vehicle and the private touches.

Note on hotels. Munsiyari has no luxury or ultra-luxury hotel. Its guest houses and small lodges are simple, and the best of them have views of the Panchachuli peaks. So the Luxury and Ultra-Luxury tiers here buy a better room grade, a Mercedes on the Delhi legs, a private guide and the private touches, not a five-star property. Kausani has two heritage-style properties, The Buransh Retreat and The Heritage Resort. The Almora night uses AyurVAID Kalmatia, an 1867 hilltop house that now works as an Ayurveda retreat. Property names are proposals and are confirmed at booking. Rates in this document are modelled, not contract rates.

Prices are indicative and modelled. The upper figure covers date and season variation. The final quote depends on dates, hotels confirmed and any upgrade you choose.

Why Choose This Munsiyari Tour Package

  • Built for the road, not around it. The 275 km from Kathgodam to Munsiyari takes 10 to 12 hours in one push — this itinerary splits it into two comfortable days each way, with a night in Almora going up and a two-night stay in Kausani coming back.

  • Four nights, not one. Most visitors give Munsiyari a single night before moving on. Four nights here buy you a genuine sunrise, a full mountain-walking day, a culture day with local weavers, and a slower day to actually rest.

  • The culture is as much the point as the view. This isn't just a peaks-and-photos itinerary — a morning with a Johari Bhotia weaving household and a visit to the Tribal Heritage Museum put the region's trans-Himalayan trading history at the centre of the trip.

  • Genuinely private, throughout. Your own vehicle, driver and guide stay with you from Kathgodam onward — nobody else joins the car, and every evening is yours.

  • Honest about what Munsiyari actually offers. There's no five-star hotel at the end of this road, and this package says so plainly rather than overselling a guest house as something it isn't.

  • Local knowledge that runs deep. BizareXpedition is headquartered in Haridwar, in the same state as this route, so the road conditions, the guest houses and the drivers on this remote stretch are known first-hand.

Munsiyari Panchachuli Peaks Season Adjustments

Weather and road status change by year, so we confirm both when we quote.

What You'll Experience

  • Sunrise on the Panchachuli peaks. Breakfast on the Munsiyari ridge with a flask and a blanket, watching the sun reach five summits between 6,334 and 6,904 m.

  • The walk to Khaliya Top. An alpine meadow at about 3,500 m where, on a clear day, Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, Hardeol, Nandakot and Rajrambha all line up in a single view.

  • The Tribal Heritage Museum. A collection of tools, coins, clothes and weapons from the old Indo-Tibetan trade, housed in Nanasen village.

  • A morning with Johari weavers. Watch pashmina spun and woven by hand in a household connected to the Panchachuli Women Weavers movement, revived in 1991.

  • A birding walk in the Gori river basin. An Important Bird Area with about 319 recorded species — roughly a quarter of India's total — plus a stop at India's first lichen park nearby.

  • Two nights at Kausani. The ridge town where Gandhi spent 14 days writing his commentary on the Gita, with its own clear view of Trisul, Nanda Devi and Panchachuli.

  • The Shatabdi Express. A comfortable, scenic train journey between Delhi and Kathgodam that lets the plains fall away before the long mountain road begins.

Who This Trip Suits

  • Repeat Himalaya travellers who've already covered the mainstream Uttarakhand and Himachal circuits and want somewhere genuinely less visited

  • Culture-minded mountain travellers interested in the Johari Bhotia's trans-Himalayan trading history as much as the peaks themselves

  • Birders and slow walkers drawn to the Gori river basin's roughly 319 recorded bird species and the moderate Khaliya Top trail

  • Travellers comfortable with long mountain drives and simple guest-house accommodation in exchange for a view very few other visitors get to see

  • Gandhi and Indian history readers curious about the Anasakti Ashram at Kausani, where Gandhi wrote his commentary on the Gita

It suits guests genuinely at ease with long days on narrow mountain roads and modest accommodation at the far end of them; it's a poor fit for anyone wanting five-star comfort throughout or unwilling to spend the better part of two days each way simply getting to and from a remote frontier town.

PRACTICAL NOTES

  • The train. The Shatabdi leaves New Delhi at 6:20 am and reaches Kathgodam at 11:55 am. The return leaves Kathgodam at 3:20 pm and reaches New Delhi at 8:55 pm. It runs seven days a week, with Executive and AC Chair Car, and tickets are booked early.

  • The road. From Kathgodam to Munsiyari is about 275 km via Almora, Bageshwar and Thal, and takes 10 to 12 hours in one go. The road is good to Bageshwar, and narrow mountain roads begin after Thal. If you get car sick, tell us and the driver sets a gentler pace.

  • Altitude. Munsiyari is at about 2,200 m and Khaliya Top at about 3,500 m. Drink water, go slowly on the first evening and tell the guide about headache or breathlessness the same day.

  • The Khaliya walk. It is about 6 km from Balati Bend to the top and takes 5 to 8 hours in all. It is steep in places, and cloud often covers the peaks by afternoon, so we start early. Anyone who prefers not to climb can walk in a lower meadow.

  • Weather. Days are cool and nights are cold in autumn. Bring layers, a down jacket, gloves, a hat and walking shoes.

  • Permits. No permit is needed for Munsiyari town or Khaliya Top on this plan. Milam and Ralam routes need an Inner Line Permit from the SDM office at Munsiyari with ITBP clearance, and rules for foreign guests vary.

  • Dress. Cover shoulders and knees in temples, and take off shoes at the door. The guide tells you where it matters.

  • Connectivity. Mobile signal is patchy at Munsiyari and on the road. Your guide keeps a fixed daily check-in time with our office.

  • Health. Anyone with heart or lung conditions should see a doctor before booking a trip above 2,000 m.

  • Food. Kumaoni food is simple, and vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are both available in most places. Tell us about allergies and the guide arranges each meal.

  • Cash. ATMs are few in Munsiyari. Carry small notes for tea, tips and small purchases.

Itinerary (Day Wise)

Nine days to a ridge most travellers never reach. The train covers the plains first — Delhi to Kathgodam on the Shatabdi — and then the road takes over, climbing 275 km in two unhurried stages so nobody arrives at Munsiyari worn out from a single ten-hour push. What waits at the end is a breakfast eaten in the cold with a blanket over your knees while the sun finds the five Panchachuli summits, a walk up to Khaliya Top where five peaks line up at once, and a morning spent with a Johari Bhotia family watching pashmina get spun by hand, the same trade that once carried this valley's name to Tibet and back. Four full nights here mean the trip isn't a photo stop on the way to somewhere else. Kausani closes the loop on the way home, on its own ridge, with its own long view of the range.

Day 1

ARRIVE DELHI | A Night Before the Train

Route: Delhi (airport, hotel)

The Shatabdi to Kathgodam leaves New Delhi at 6:20 am, so the plan starts with a night in Delhi. Your trip lead meets you at arrivals, takes you to the hotel, and hands over your train tickets and a short briefing on the nine days ahead.

Nothing is scheduled after that. Sleep, because the alarm is early, and the road to Munsiyari is long.

Experience of the Day

–  Airport pickup.

–  Briefing and train tickets.

Food

Dinner at the hotel, chosen from a menu that suits jet lag. The hotel handles allergies.

Activities to Do

  • Airport pickup

  • Hotel check-in

  • Trip briefing

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • A late-afternoon walk through Lodhi Garden if you land early.

Day 2

DELHI TO ALMORA | By Train and Into the Hills

Route: New Delhi – Kathgodam (train) – Almora (road)

The train crosses the plains in about five and a half hours, with breakfast served in your seat. At Kathgodam the plains end and the road climbs about 82 km through pine and oak to Almora, at about 1,642 m. Your guide stops for lunch on the way.

The night in Almora is a short day on purpose. Munsiyari is about 275 km from Kathgodam, and the drive takes 10 to 12 hours in one go. Splitting it here means you start tomorrow's long road fresh, with about 190 km to go. You arrive in the afternoon, check in, and walk in the old town before dark.

The Human Story

Almora was founded in 1568 by King Kalyan Chand of the Chand dynasty. This package uses the town as a resting place, and our Almora package covers it in depth.

Experience of the Day

–  Board the Shatabdi Express at New Delhi.

–  The road from Kathgodam up to Almora.

–  An evening walk in the old town.

Food

Lunch at a roadside restaurant chosen by the guide. Dinner at the hotel, with Kumaoni dishes on request.

Activities to Do

  • Train to Kathgodam

  • Drive to Almora

  • Evening walk

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • Tea on the hotel terrace at sunset.

Day 3

ALMORA TO MUNSIYARI | The Long Road North

Route: Almora – Bageshwar – Thal – Munsiyari

This is the longest drive of the trip and it is planned as a slow one. The road runs north through Bageshwar, a temple town at the meeting of the Sarayu and Gomti rivers, then on to Thal, where the narrow mountain road begins. The valley of the Gori river opens ahead, and the road climbs to Munsiyari.

Munsiyari sits at about 2,200 m, in Pithoragarh district, on the ridge that looks straight at the Panchachuli peaks. You arrive in the late afternoon. On a clear evening the five peaks turn pink and then grey as you check in,.

Distances between Kathgodam and Munsiyari vary between sources, and we treat 275 km and about 10 hours as the working figure. Your guide confirms the road status the evening before.

Experience of the Day

–  Bageshwar on the way north.

–  The narrow road above Thal.

–  First light on the Panchachuli peaks.

Food

Lunch at a roadside place in Bageshwar or Thal. Dinner at the hotel, with hot soup and simple mountain food.

Activities to Do

  • Drive to Munsiyari

  • Evening at the viewpoint

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • A short walk to a viewpoint before dinner.

Day 4

MUNSIYARI | Panchachuli at Dawn

Route: Munsiyari (viewpoint, Nanda Devi Temple, Tribal Heritage Museum)

The peaks are best at first light. Your guide wakes you before dawn and takes you to the viewpoint for a breakfast in the cold, with a flask and a blanket, while the sun reaches Panchachuli. The name means five hearths, and the peaks range from 6,334 to 6,904 m. The highest, Panchchuli II, was first climbed in 1973 by an ITBP expedition, and Panchchuli III has never been climbed. They form the watershed between the Gori and the Darma valleys. One theory derives the name from the five cooking hearths of the Pandavas.

After breakfast you visit the Nanda Devi Temple in Munsiyari. Later your guide takes you to the Tribal Heritage Museum in Nanasen village, about 2.5 km from town. It was founded by Dr. S. S. Pangtey, a teacher, trekker and writer who specialised in the Bhotiya people of this valley, and it was first known as the Masterji Museum. Its collection includes tools, currency, bowls, clothes and weapons used in the old trade between India and Tibet.

The afternoon is free. Rest, read or walk.

The Human Story

Munsiyari was a link in the old Indo-Tibetan trade route. Its people, the Johari Bhotia, were semi-nomadic traders who crossed the passes to Tibet and wove fine pashmina, and that trade is why this valley has the culture that it has.

Experience of the Day

–  Sunrise breakfast on the ridge.

–  Nanda Devi Temple.

–  Tribal Heritage Museum.

–  A slow afternoon.

Food

Breakfast at the viewpoint. Lunch and dinner at the hotel.

Activities to Do

  • Sunrise at the viewpoint

  • Nanda Devi Temple

  • Tribal Heritage Museum

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • A walk through the Gori valley village lanes.

Day 5

MUNSIYARI | Khaliya Top

Route: Munsiyari – Balati Bend – Khaliya Top

Khaliya Top is an alpine meadow at about 3,500 m, above Munsiyari. The walk begins at Balati Bend, about 9 km from town, and it is about 6 km to the top. It is a steep climb and takes most walkers 4 to 5 hours up, and 5 to 8 hours in all. The path is considered easy to moderate, so a reasonably fit guest can do it at a slow pace.

From the top you see Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, Hardeol, Nandakot and Rajrambha in one line. Start early, because cloud often covers the peaks by afternoon. A local guide and a porter come with you and carry the water and lunch. If you prefer not to climb, the same day can be spent at a lower meadow, or at the village.

You return to the hotel in the late afternoon.

Experience of the Day

–  The walk from Balati Bend to Khaliya Top.

–  Five peaks in one view.

–  Lunch on the meadow.

Food

A packed lunch on the trail. Dinner at the hotel.

Activities to Do

  • Drive to Balati Bend

  • Khaliya Top walk

  • Packed lunch

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • A shorter walk to a lower meadow for those who prefer it.

Day 6

MUNSIYARI | The Johari Valley and the Birds

Route: Munsiyari (Gori valley, weavers, birds)

Today is for the people and the birds of the valley. The morning starts with a visit to a Johari weaving household, where pashmina and wool are still spun and woven by hand. The Panchachuli Women Weavers movement, revived in 1991, works with women artisans in Almora and the villages around Munsiyari, using pashmina from Tibet and Mongolia. We confirm a visit with the weavers for your date.

In the afternoon a naturalist takes you for a birding walk. The Gori river basin has recorded about 319 bird species, roughly a quarter of India's total, and BirdLife International has named it an Important Bird Area. Near Munsiyari the Forest Department has also set up India's first lichen park, on 1.5 acres.

Dinner is quiet, and it is the last night here.

Experience of the Day

–  A visit to a weaving household.

–  A birding walk with a naturalist.

–  The lichen park.

Food

Meals at the hotel, with local ingredients.

Shopping

Woollen shawls and stoles from the weaving cooperatives. Your guide points out workshops with fixed prices.

Activities to Do

  • Weaving visit

  • Birding walk

  • Lichen park

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • Birthi Falls, if the road and the water are right.

Day 7

MUNSIYARI TO KAUSANI | The Road Back

Route: Munsiyari – Thal – Bageshwar – Kausani

You drive south past Thal and Bageshwar, and at Bageshwar the road turns to Kausani, a ridge town at about 1,890 m. From here the peaks of Trisul, Nanda Devi and Panchchuli are visible on a clear day.

You arrive in the afternoon at a hotel above the valley. The evening is for the light on the peaks, which Gandhi called the Switzerland of India.

Experience of the Day

–  The road south from Munsiyari.

–  Sunset over the peaks at Kausani.

Food

Lunch at a roadside place. Dinner at the hotel.

Activities to Do

  • Drive to Kausani

  • Sunset viewpoint

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • Tea on the terrace.

Day 8

KAUSANI | The Ashram and the Tea

Route: Kausani (Anasakti Ashram, tea estate)

Kausani is where Gandhi stayed for 14 days at the Anasakti Ashram, and wrote his commentary on the Gita, called Anasakti Yoga. Your guide takes you to the ashram in the morning, then to the museum of the Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant, who was born here in 1900. Sarla Behn, Gandhi's disciple, set up the Lakshmi Ashram nearby in 1946.

The Kausani tea estate was set up in 2000 and 2001 and produces about 70,000 kg a year. You walk through it and taste the tea. The afternoon is free, and the light on the peaks is best late in the day.

Experience of the Day

–  Anasakti Ashram.

–  Sumitranandan Pant's museum.

–  The tea estate.

Food

Lunch at a hotel restaurant. Dinner at the hotel.

Shopping

Handloom shawls and tea from the estate.

Activities to Do

  • Anasakti Ashram

  • Pant Museum

  • Tea estate walk

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • The Baijnath temple group, about 16.5 km from Kausani.

Day 9

KAUSANI TO DELHI | Down by Road and Rail

Route: Kausani – Kathgodam (road) – New Delhi (train)

Breakfast at the hotel, then the road down through Almora to Kathgodam, about 134 km and 4 to 5 hours with a lunch stop. The Shatabdi leaves at 3:20 pm and reaches New Delhi at 8:55 pm, and your trip lead meets you at the station.

Because the train arrives in the evening, a late international departure works best. If your flight is earlier, we add a night in Delhi, quoted on request.

Experience of the Day

–  Drive down to Kathgodam.

–  Shatabdi Express to New Delhi.

Food

Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch on the road. Dinner on the train.

Activities to Do

  • Drive to Kathgodam

  • Shatabdi to Delhi

  • Airport drop

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • A Delhi night after the train, quoted on request.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Munsiyari & the Panchachuli Peaks

We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.

Where is Munsiyari and what is it known for?

Munsiyari is a hill town in Pithoragarh district, in eastern Kumaon, at about 2,200 m. It is known for its view of the Panchachuli peaks, the Johari Bhotia culture of the old Indo-Tibetan trade, and treks such as Khaliya Top. It is one of the least-visited corners of Kumaon.

How do I get from Delhi to Munsiyari?

By train and road. The Shatabdi Express leaves New Delhi at 6:20 am and reaches Kathgodam at 11:55 am, and a private car covers the rest. Kathgodam to Munsiyari is about 275 km and 10 to 12 hours, so we split it with a night in Almora.

What are the Panchachuli peaks?

Panchachuli is a group of five snow peaks in eastern Kumaon, from 6,334 to 6,904 m, with Panchchuli II the highest. They form the watershed between the Gori and Darma valleys. Panchchuli III has never been climbed. One theory derives the name from the five cooking hearths of the Pandavas.

What is the best time to visit Munsiyari?

March to June and September to November are given as the best times. This package is built for late September to November, when the air after the monsoon is at its clearest. Winter brings heavy snow and possible road closures, and the monsoon brings landslides.

How many days do you need for Munsiyari?

Nine days from Delhi, with four nights in Munsiyari. The road takes two days each way from the train, and four nights give you a sunrise, a mountain day, a culture day and a rest day. A shorter trip gives you less than two full days at the end of a very long road.

Is the Khaliya Top trek difficult?

It is described as easy to moderate, but steep in places. It starts at Balati Bend, about 9 km from Munsiyari, and it is about 6 km to the top at about 3,500 m, taking 5 to 8 hours in all. A reasonably fit guest can do it slowly with a local guide, and there is a gentler alternative.

Who are the Johari Bhotia people?

They are the semi-nomadic, trans-Himalayan traders and weavers of Munsiyari and the Johar valley, who carried goods to Tibet and wove fine pashmina. The Tribal Heritage Museum in Nanasen village holds tools, clothes and money from that trade, and the weaving continues in the villages.

Do foreigners need a permit for Munsiyari?

Not for Munsiyari town or Khaliya Top on this plan. Milam and Ralam routes need an Inner Line Permit from the SDM office at Munsiyari with ITBP clearance, and rules for foreign guests on the frontier routes vary. We confirm the position with the Pithoragarh administration before we quote anything beyond Munsiyari.

Can non-Hindus visit the temples at Munsiyari and Bageshwar?

We have not found a rule barring visitors at these temples. In 2026 the Badri-Kedar Temple Committee resolved to bar non-Hindus from 47 temples in its charge, and the reports we read did not name any temple on this route. We confirm the position for your dates before you travel.

Are there luxury hotels in Munsiyari?

No. Munsiyari has guest houses and small lodges, and the best have views of the Panchachuli peaks. So the higher tiers here buy a better room grade, a private guide and private touches. Kausani, on the way back, has two heritage-style properties, and the Almora night uses AyurVAID Kalmatia.

Is Munsiyari safe for tourists?

Munsiyari is generally safe for tourists. The main risks are the long mountain roads, landslides in the rains and altitude on the Khaliya walk. Your driver does not drive after dark, and the guide keeps a daily check-in with our office.

How much does a private Munsiyari tour cost?

A private nine-day Munsiyari tour costs about Rs.172,106 to Rs.185,874 per couple in Premium, Rs.274,801 to Rs.296,785 in Luxury, and Rs.415,782 to Rs.449,045 in Ultra-Luxury. These are modelled figures and depend on dates, hotels confirmed and upgrades. A Delhi night after the train is priced separately.
