About

The Rann Utsav luxury tent package is a private 4-day trip from Ahmedabad to Tent City Dhordo, the seasonal luxury camp on the edge of the White Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. You stay two nights in an air-conditioned tent with all meals, ride a camel cart and ATV on the salt desert, watch sunset from Kala Dungar and enjoy Kutchi folk music every evening. Prices start at about ₹48,636 per person.

Every winter, a small village at the edge of India's great salt desert becomes the setting for one of the country's most unusual festivals. The Rann Utsav turns the White Rann of Kutch into a stage for music, dance, crafts and food, and a whole town of tents rises from the ground to host its guests.

Tent City at Dhordo is where you'll stay. Think comfortable air-conditioned tents with proper beds and private bathrooms, a few minutes from a white salt plain so flat and wide it looks like snow. By day, you ride out onto the salt. By night, you listen to folk musicians around the fire and watch the stars come out over the desert.

This is a short, relaxed trip built around one place. Two nights at Tent City, one full day on the White Rann, and a private car, driver and guide taking care of everything, including the desert permit.

What Is the Rann Utsav?

The Rann Utsav is a winter festival held each year at Dhordo, on the edge of the Great Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. It's organised with Gujarat Tourism and runs for several months, roughly from November to February or early March, when the salt desert is dry and white.

The festival centres on Tent City, a seasonal camp built just for the Utsav. Guests enjoy Kutchi folk music and dance, local food, craft stalls and trips onto the salt. Dhordo itself has been recognised by UNWTO as one of the world's Best Tourism Villages, in 2023.

What You'll Experience

We don't share a day-by-day plan on this page, but here's what the four days include.

An easy first night

You arrive in Ahmedabad, settle into your hotel and get a short briefing on the drive, the permit and what to pack for desert nights.

Into the desert

The drive to Dhordo is long, close to eight hours, via Bhuj and the Bhirandiyara checkpost, where your permit is processed. You reach Tent City in the afternoon, in time to see the White Rann in the golden light before dinner and your first evening of folk music.

A full day on the White Rann

Ride a camel cart onto the salt, take an ATV across the flats and drive up Kala Dungar to watch the sun set over the desert. The evening ends with dinner and another night of music at Tent City.

Sunrise, then home

Early risers can catch sunrise over the White Rann, when it's quiet and almost empty. After breakfast, you drive back to Ahmedabad for your onward journey.

WHY BOOK THIS WITH BIZAREXPEDITION

A genuine gap in BizareXpedition's own catalogue: Dhordo and the Rann Utsav are live today only inside longer 6- to 8-day circuits, with no standalone glamping weekend of their own.

  • The destination, not a detour. GJ-P07, GJ-P11 and GJ-P19, BizareXpedition's own existing circuits, all include Dhordo as one stop among several; this trip is built around the Rann itself as the whole point of the journey, with every day pointed at it.

  • The Tent City's own top tiers, not an unnamed placeholder. Accommodation runs through Tent City's confirmed AC categories at every level, up to the Rajwadi Bhunga, rather than a generic best-available tent.

  • One long day on the road, disclosed plainly, not hidden in the schedule. The Ahmedabad-Dhordo drive, via Bhuj, runs close to eight hours each way; this itinerary says so upfront rather than understating it, and schedules nothing else on either travel day.

  • The permit handled, not left to you at a checkpost. The border-area entry permit required for every visitor to the Rann is arranged as part of this trip, with your guide present at the Bhirandiyara checkpost rather than leaving you to navigate it alone.

  • A registered company, not a middleman. BizareXpedition Services Pvt. Ltd. (CIN U63090UR2016PTC007433), headquartered in Haridwar, plans and runs the trip itself.

SEASON ADJUSTMENTS

Tent City exists only for the Rann Utsav season itself; this is not a year-round product, and its open and close dates are confirmed fresh each year rather than assumed from the year before.

Season Reported window Notes

2025-26 (confirmed)

23 October 2025 to 4 March 2026

The most recently confirmed full season at the time of writing.

2026-27 (reported)

1 November 2026 to late February/early March 2027

Two independent trade sources report 7 March 2027 as the close date; one reports 28 February 2027. Confirmed closer to the date.

Full-moon nights

A premium applies

Tent City's own rates rise on full-moon and blackout-period nights throughout the season; book early for these dates specifically.

Rann Utsav Luxury Tent City Season Adjustments

PRACTICAL NOTES

  • This is one long day on the road, each way. The Ahmedabad-Dhordo drive via Bhuj runs close to eight hours; this itinerary schedules nothing else on either travel day, and the drive itself is well within the single-day range used elsewhere in this series, not a route that needs a waypoint split.

  • The border-area permit is compulsory, not optional. Every visitor, Indian or foreign, needs a permit to enter the Rann itself; carry your passport for the Bhirandiyara checkpost, where the formalities are confirmed on the day.

  • Desert nights turn properly cold. Daytime temperatures in Kutch's cooler months stay pleasant, but nights at Tent City drop sharply; pack warm layers even though the season itself runs through the mild part of the year.

  • Two nights is enough, not a compromise. Tent City is bookable for a single night, but two nights gives one full day for the Rann and Kala Dungar without rushing either, which is the balance this itinerary is built around.

  • Tent categories are named, not generic. Accommodation runs through Tent City's own confirmed AC tiers rather than an unnamed placeholder; the ground team reconfirms the exact category and its current rate before every departure.

  • Gujarat is dry. Foreigners can apply for a free temporary tourist liquor permit; Tent City itself does not serve alcohol as standard.

  • Mobile and data coverage is patchy at Dhordo. The Rann's remoteness means connectivity drops in and out around Tent City and disappears almost entirely out on the salt itself; plan accordingly for time away from a signal.

  • Extending the trip. Dholavira's Harappan ruins, Bhuj's earthquake-restored palaces, and Mandvi's beach and old shipyard are all realistic additions if you want to extend this weekend into a longer Kutch circuit.

Itinerary (Day Wise)

You start in Ahmedabad with an easy first evening at your hotel and a quick chat with us about the drive, the permit and what to pack for chilly desert nights. The next morning you drive to Dhordo through Bhuj. It takes most of the day, but we sort out your permit at Bhirandiyara on the way and get you to Tent City in time to see the White Rann in the late afternoon light. Your third day is spent out on the salt. You'll take a camel cart and an ATV across the flats, then drive up Kala Dungar to watch the sun go down over the desert, and finish the day with dinner and Kutchi folk music back at camp. On the last morning, get up early for sunrise over the Rann if you can, because it's quiet and almost empty at that hour. After breakfast, your driver takes you back to Ahmedabad.

Day 1

ARRIVAL IN AHMEDABAD | BRIEFING BEFORE THE DESERT

Route: Arrival at Ahmedabad; evening free

Your guide meets you at Ahmedabad airport for the first night of a rann utsav luxury tent international trip built around a single destination: the White Rann itself, Asia's largest salt desert, under a Tent City that exists for exactly five months of the year.

The evening is kept deliberately light. A short pre-departure briefing covers what the next three days actually involve: a long drive tomorrow, the border-area permit formalities en route, and what to pack for desert nights that turn properly cold even while the days stay warm. Rest well; tomorrow is the trip's one long day on the road.

Experience of the Day

  • Airport pickup and transfer to the hotel

  • Pre-departure briefing on the Rann crossing and permit process

Food

Recommended: Dinner at the hotel, a relaxed Gujarati thali before an early start.

Must-Try: Masala chai, Ahmedabad's everyday staple, as a first taste of the state.

Activities to Do

  • Hotel check-in and evening briefing

Day 2

AHMEDABAD TO THE WHITE RANN | VIA BHUJ, INTO TENT CITY

Route: Ahmedabad to Dhordo via Bhuj, about 425 km, 7.5 to 8 hours by road, including the permit stop

The trip's one long day on the road: Ahmedabad to Bhuj is itself 340 km and 6 to 6.5 hours, with a further 85 km, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes, on to Dhordo — a single long driving day rather than a route needing a waypoint split, on the same precedent already used elsewhere in this series for comparable distances. A stop at the Bhirandiyara checkpost en route handles the border-area entry permit that every visitor, Indian or foreign, needs to cross into the restricted Rann zone; carry your passport, since the formalities ask for identity and visa details on the spot.

Check-in at Tent City typically opens from early afternoon, and arrival timed for the second half of the day means a first glimpse of the White Rann at golden hour, before dinner and the evening's cultural programme: live Kutchi folk music and dance performed at the venue itself, part of every night's rhythm here rather than a one-off show.

Note: Carry your passport (and, for foreign nationals, visa details) for the Bhirandiyara checkpost; the border-area permit is compulsory for everyone entering the Rann, confirmed on the day rather than pre-cleared in advance.

Experience of the Day

  • Long drive from Ahmedabad to Dhordo via Bhuj

  • Border-area permit formalities at the Bhirandiyara checkpost

  • First evening at Tent City, with the nightly cultural programme

Food

Recommended: Lunch en route, a roadside thali stop between Ahmedabad and Bhuj.

Must-Try: Dinner at Tent City: a full Kutchi-Gujarati spread, included in your stay.

Activities to Do

  • Drive to Dhordo via Bhuj

  • Tent City check-in

  • Evening cultural programme

Day 3

A FULL DAY ON THE SALT | CAMEL CARTS, KALA DUNGAR, AND THE RANN BY NIGHT

Route: Dhordo, local: White Rann salt flats, Kala Dungar (Khavda)

The morning is given over to the White Rann itself: a camel-cart ride out onto the salt, far enough from the Tent City's own lights and noise that the flat white horizon runs unbroken in every direction, followed by an ATV ride across the open ground for guests who want a faster look at the same landscape.

The afternoon's excursion is Kala Dungar, the Black Hill near Khavda and the highest point in Kutch, reached within the same permitted zone as the Rann itself — its own sunset viewpoint over the desert below is one of the area's genuine highlights, distinct from anything visible from Tent City. The evening returns to Tent City for dinner and a second night of the cultural programme, with the salt flats themselves lit differently after dark than they were at sunrise.

Note: Kala Dungar sits inside the same border-restricted zone as the Rann itself, so the permit obtained on Day 2 covers this excursion too — no separate pass is needed.

Experience of the Day

  • Camel-cart ride onto the White Rann salt flats

  • ATV ride across the salt desert

  • Kala Dungar (Black Hill) sunset viewpoint

  • Second evening of Tent City's cultural programme

Food

Recommended: Lunch back at Tent City between excursions.

Must-Try: Dinner at Tent City, with a second night of the kitchen's full Kutchi-Gujarati spread.

Shopping

Handicraft stalls at Tent City itself, Kutchi embroidery and mirror-work among the more portable options.

Activities to Do

  • Camel-cart ride

  • ATV ride on the salt

  • Kala Dungar excursion

  • Evening cultural programme

Optional Nearby Excursions

  • A stop at Hodka village, known for its community-run rural-tourism project and Kutchi craft, if time and energy allow

Day 4

SUNRISE, THEN DEPARTURE | THE LAST LOOK AT THE SALT

Route: Dhordo to Ahmedabad via Bhuj, about 425 km, 7.5 to 8 hours by road; Ahmedabad airport, departure

An early option this morning: sunrise over the White Rann, a quieter and considerably less crowded version of yesterday's golden-hour view, for guests willing to be up before the camp itself properly wakes.

Breakfast at Tent City, then the same long drive back to Ahmedabad in reverse, via Bhuj, timed against your onward flight. Book international connections with a comfortable margin; this is a weekend built around one destination, not a touring circuit, and the desert itself is the only thing on the itinerary worth the long drive twice.

Experience of the Day

  • Optional sunrise viewing at the White Rann

  • Drive back to Ahmedabad via Bhuj

  • Transfer to Ahmedabad airport

Food

Recommended: Breakfast at Tent City before checkout.

Must-Try: A last cup of masala chai en route to Ahmedabad.

Activities to Do

  • Sunrise at the Rann (optional)

  • Drive to Ahmedabad

  • Departure

  2. Support Local and Sustainable Businesses : Eat at local restaurants, buy souvenirs from local artisans, and choose tour operators that prioritize sustainable practices and support the local community.
  3. Respect Wildlife and Natural Habitats : Avoid disturbing wildlife or their natural habitats. Stick to designated paths and observe animals from a distance without feeding or touching them.
  4. Dispose of Waste Properly : Follow local guidelines for recycling and waste disposal. If facilities aren't available, carry your waste with you until you can dispose of it responsibly.
  5. Educate Yourself and Others : Learn about the local environment, culture, and customs. Respect local practices and traditions, and share your knowledge about responsible travel with others.
  6. Choose Sustainable Activities : Engage in eco-friendly activities such as hiking, snorkeling, or visiting national parks. Avoid activities that exploit animals or damage the environment.
  7. Leave No Trace : Follow the principle of "Leave No Trace," which means leaving natural areas as you found them. Pack out all trash, avoid picking plants, and refrain from carving or writing on rocks or trees.
  8. Plant Trees Whenever Possible : Participate in local tree-planting initiatives or plant trees in your own community. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and help support biodiversity, making them vital for a healthy environment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Rann Utsav: Luxury Desert Glamping Bucket-List

We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.

Is this a genuine rann utsav luxury tent international weekend, or Dhordo folded into a longer tour?

It's built around Dhordo as the single destination; BizareXpedition's own other Kutch circuits (GJ-P07, GJ-P11, GJ-P19) fold it in as one stop among several, but every day of this trip points at the Rann itself.

What makes this a dhordo glamping package rather than a standard camping trip?

Accommodation runs through Tent City's own confirmed AC categories, from a Deluxe Swiss Cottage up to the Rajwadi Bhunga, with all meals and the nightly cultural programme included rather than arranged piecemeal.

Is a white desert luxury camping tour really worth an eight-hour drive each way?

That's a genuine question worth asking plainly: the White Rann is one of the only landscapes of its kind on earth, visible from space, and this itinerary schedules nothing else on either travel day so the drive itself doesn't compete with the destination.

Do we need a permit to enter the Rann?

Yes, every visitor does, Indian or foreign; this itinerary arranges it at the Bhirandiyara checkpost en route, with your guide present, rather than leaving you to navigate the process alone.

How long does Tent City actually stay open?

Only for the Rann Utsav season itself, roughly November through February or March depending on the year; it is not a year-round property, and this itinerary's dates are confirmed fresh each season.

Can we book just one night at Tent City instead of two?

A single night is available, but two nights is what this itinerary is built around, giving one full day for the Rann and Kala Dungar without rushing either.

What's the difference between the three tent tiers?

The Deluxe AC Swiss Cottage, Premium AC Tent and Rajwadi AC Bhunga are all genuine, named categories within Tent City's own property, rising in space, furnishing and bathroom fit-out at each level.

Is Kala Dungar part of the same permit as the Rann itself?

Yes, it sits inside the same border-restricted zone, so no separate pass is needed beyond the one arranged for the Rann.

Why only four days?

Because this is a bucket-list weekend built around one destination, not a touring circuit; guests who want more of Kutch can extend it into a longer trip on either end.

What should we pack?

Warm layers for Rann nights, which turn properly cold even in a season that otherwise runs mild, plus comfortable closed shoes for the salt flats and a valid passport for the permit checkpost.

How much does the tour cost?

This 4-day weekend costs about Rs.97,272 to Rs.105,054 per couple at the Premium tier, or Rs.48,636 to Rs.52,527 per person. Luxury is Rs.118,944 to Rs.128,460 per couple and Ultra-Luxury Rs.151,452 to Rs.163,568. Figures are indicative.
