About
The Velavadar National Park tour is a private 4-day wildlife trip from Ahmedabad to Velavadar Blackbuck National Park in Gujarat, India. With a grassland specialist guide, you take four jeep safaris to see large herds of blackbuck, look for the rare Indian wolf and watch thousands of harriers arrive to roost at dusk. Prices start at about ₹43,281 per person.
Most wildlife trips in India are about forests and big cats. Velavadar is something else entirely. Here, the land is flat, golden and wide open, more like an African savannah than a jungle. And across it run herds of blackbuck, one of the most beautiful antelopes in the world, with the males' long spiral horns catching the light.
Because there are no trees in the way, you see everything. Blackbuck bucks sparring and showing off. Nilgai grazing at the edges. A jackal trotting through the grass. And if you're patient and lucky, an Indian wolf, one of the country's rarest and most secretive predators.
At sunset in winter, the sky fills with harriers, slim birds of prey that fly in from far away to sleep in the grass. It's one of the great wildlife moments in Asia, and very few visitors have ever heard of it. This tour gives you time to enjoy it properly, with four safaris and a guide who knows the grassland well.
About Velavadar Blackbuck National Park
Velavadar Blackbuck National Park lies in Bhavnagar district, in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, near the Gulf of Khambhat. It's small, about 34 square kilometres, but it protects one of the last large patches of natural grassland in western India.
It was created to save the blackbuck, which once roamed across much of India in huge numbers. Today, Velavadar has one of the highest concentrations of blackbuck anywhere, and the grassland supports a surprising range of other wildlife too.
Gujarat's Three Wildlife Worlds
Gujarat has three very different wildlife landscapes. Velavadar is the one most visitors miss.

What You'll Experience
We don't share a day-by-day plan on this page, but here's what the four days include.
A briefing in Ahmedabad
You spend your first night in Ahmedabad. In the evening, your guide explains how the grassland works, which animals to look for and how they behave, so you know exactly what you're seeing once you're out there.
Through Bhavnagar to the park
On the drive to Velavadar, you stop in Bhavnagar, an old princely state capital. Bhavnagar was the first princely state to join independent India in 1947. You visit Takhteshwar Temple on its hill and see Nilambag Palace from outside, before reaching your lodge in time for an afternoon safari.
Dawn and dusk in the grassland
A full day at the park brings a dawn safari, the best time for wolves, hyenas and foxes, and an evening safari for the blackbuck in golden light and the harriers arriving to roost. On your last morning, you can take one more early safari before driving back to Ahmedabad.
ACCOMMODATION CATEGORIES
Tier labels follow the standard of the property, not a star count. Velavadar's own lodging market is small and wildlife-lodge-driven rather than chain-hotel-driven; rates are confirmed closer to each departure.

WHY BOOK THIS WITH BIZAREXPEDITION
A genuine gap in BizareXpedition's own catalogue, confirmed on both counts: Velavadar has no live product at all, and Bhavnagar has zero live presence even as a gateway city.
The third ecosystem, not a missing chapter. Gir's forest and the Rann's desert are both live in BizareXpedition's catalogue today; this trip completes Gujarat's wildlife story with its grassland third, built as its own standalone product rather than an add-on.
Four safaris at one reserve, not one safari inside a longer loop. This itinerary spends three full days at Velavadar specifically, timed around dawn wolf activity and dusk harrier roosting, rather than treating it as a single stop on the way elsewhere.
Bhavnagar given its own stop, not driven past. Takhteshwar Temple and Nilambag Palace are built into the Day 2 drive deliberately, since Bhavnagar itself has no live presence in BizareXpedition's catalogue to draw on.
Expectations set plainly, not oversold. Lesser florican, often mentioned alongside Velavadar, is a monsoon breeder largely absent during this trip's November-to-February season; this itinerary says so plainly rather than promising a species guests are unlikely to see.
A registered company, not a middleman. BizareXpedition Services Pvt. Ltd. (CIN U63090UR2016PTC007433), headquartered in Haridwar, plans and runs the trip itself.
SEASON ADJUSTMENTS
Velavadar National Park closes completely for the monsoon; this is a sharply seasonal product, not a year-round one.
| Season | Window | Notes |
|---|---|---|
|
Park open |
16 October to 15 June |
Winter safari hours run 6:30am-11:30am and 2pm-7pm; summer hours shift slightly earlier and later. |
|
Peak season |
November to February |
The core window for the harrier roost and the most comfortable daytime temperatures for grassland safaris. |
|
Park closed |
16 June to 15 October |
Monsoon closure; this is also when lesser florican is most likely present, making it a genuine trade-off rather than a simple best-time-to-visit question. |
Velavadar Blackbuck National Park Season Adjustments
PRACTICAL NOTES
Lesser florican is disclosed plainly, not promised. It's a monsoon-season breeder, present mainly when the park itself is closed; this itinerary, run in the November-to-February season, does not list it as a realistic target species.
The Indian wolf is a genuine specialist sighting, not a guarantee. Even a dedicated grassland guide and multiple safaris can't promise a wolf sighting; it remains one of Velavadar's rarer residents by design, not an oversight in this itinerary.
The grassland offers little shade. Unlike Gir's forest canopy, Velavadar is open grassland end to end; sun protection and a hat matter on every safari, even in the cooler winter months.
Nilambag Palace is viewed from outside only. It's a working heritage hotel, not a public monument; this itinerary includes the exterior and its history, not interior access, unless you choose to extend your own stay there separately.
Safari timing follows the animals, not a fixed clock. Dawn and dusk sessions are scheduled around when wolves, harriers and blackbuck are most active, which can mean an earlier start than a standard daytime safari.
Gujarat is dry. Foreigners can apply for a free temporary tourist liquor permit; Velavadar's lodges do not serve alcohol as standard.
Velavadar's own lodging market is small. Property choice across all three tiers reflects what's actually available near the park, a handful of wildlife lodges rather than a chain-hotel market; the ground team reconfirms exact rates before every departure.
Extending the trip. Gir's lion safaris and the White Rann at Dhordo are both realistic additions on either end if you want to extend this into Gujarat's full three-ecosystem wildlife story.

Itinerary (Day Wise)
You arrive in Ahmedabad and spend the first night there. In the evening your guide explains how the grassland works and which animals to look out for. The next day you drive towards Velavadar and stop on the way in Bhavnagar, an old princely capital, to see Takhteshwar Temple on its hill and the outside of Nilambag Palace. You reach the lodge in time for your first afternoon safari. The third day is spent in the park. You go out at dawn, when wolves, hyenas and foxes are most active, and again in the evening, when the blackbuck herds are out in the golden light and harriers come in by the thousand to roost in the grass. On the last morning you can take one more early safari before the drive back to Ahmedabad for your flight.
Day 1
ARRIVAL IN AHMEDABAD | BRIEFING ON GUJARAT'S THIRD ECOSYSTEM
Route: Arrival at Ahmedabad; evening briefing
Your guide meets you at Ahmedabad airport for a velavadar national park tour wildlife travellers plan specifically to complete Gujarat's own 'three ecosystems' story: Gir's forest, the Rann's desert, and Velavadar's grassland, the third leg most visitors never reach because no standalone product has existed for it until now.
The evening briefing sets realistic expectations rather than a generic welcome: Velavadar is a specialist destination built around open grassland rather than dense forest, and its headline species, blackbuck, the rare Indian wolf and one of the world's largest harrier roosts, behave and show themselves very differently from Gir's lions or the Rann's flamingos.
Experience of the Day
Airport pickup and transfer to the hotel
Evening briefing on Velavadar's grassland ecosystem and target species
Food
Recommended: Dinner at the hotel, a Gujarati thali before an early start.
Must-Try: Masala chai, the first of many on this trip.
Activities to Do
Hotel check-in
Grassland ecosystem briefing
Day 2
AHMEDABAD TO VELAVADAR | VIA BHAVNAGAR, FIRST BLACKBUCK SAFARI
Route: Ahmedabad to Velavadar via Bhavnagar, about 220-230 km, 4.5 to 5 hours
The drive to Velavadar runs through Bhavnagar, a princely-state capital with zero live presence anywhere in BizareXpedition's own catalogue today, confirmed and used as a worthwhile stop rather than a pass-through: Takhteshwar Temple, built in 1893 by Maharaja Takhtasinhji on a hilltop over the city, and the exterior of Nilambag Palace, built in 1879 by the German architect Simsom and the royal family's home for generations before its 1984 conversion into a heritage hotel.
Bhavnagar also holds a specific distinction worth knowing: under its last ruler, Krishnakumarsinhji, it was the very first princely state to accede to the new Dominion of India, on Mahatma Gandhi's own recommendation.
Check-in at Velavadar is timed for an early afternoon, so the first safari is already in the field by late afternoon: an introduction to blackbuck courtship, where up to a hundred males each defend a tiny territory inside an open lekking arena no bigger than a football pitch, competing for the best position through dung displays and posture rather than direct fighting.
Experience of the Day
Bhavnagar heritage stop: Takhteshwar Temple and Nilambag Palace (exterior)
Check-in at Velavadar
First afternoon safari: blackbuck lekking introduction
Food
Recommended: Lunch en route, a stop in Bhavnagar.
Must-Try: Dinner at the resort, a full Kathiawadi-Gujarati spread.
Activities to Do
Drive to Velavadar via Bhavnagar
Bhavnagar heritage stop
First Velavadar safari
Day 3
WOLVES AT DAWN, HARRIERS AT DUSK | THE WORLD'S LARGEST HARRIER ROOST
The dawn safari is timed around Velavadar's rarest resident: the Indian wolf, a properly uncommon sighting even for Gujarat's own grassland specialists, tracked here through fresh signs and known denning areas rather than guaranteed in a single drive. Striped hyena, Indian fox and golden jackal round out the grassland's other predators, all realistic sightings on the same dawn session.
The evening safari is built around what Velavadar is most internationally known for among birders: the largest harrier roost in the world, where Pallid, Montagu's and Marsh Harriers gather by the thousand at dusk to settle into the grassland for the night, arriving from every direction in a single concentrated spectacle that has no real equivalent anywhere else in this series' itineraries. The blackbuck lek runs alongside it in the same golden-hour light.
Note: Lesser florican, often associated with Velavadar in general wildlife writing, is primarily a monsoon-season breeder, present mainly in the months the park itself is closed (16 June to 15 October); it is not a realistic target during this trip's November-to-February season, and this itinerary doesn't promise it.
Experience of the Day
Dawn safari: Indian wolf tracking and grassland predators
Evening safari: the harrier roost at dusk, alongside blackbuck lekking
Food
Recommended: Lunch at the resort between safaris.
Must-Try: Dinner at the resort.
Activities to Do
Dawn wolf-tracking safari
Evening harrier-roost safari
Day 4
FINAL SAFARI, RETURN TO AHMEDABAD | ONE LAST LOOK AT THE GRASSLAND
Route: Velavadar to Ahmedabad via Bhavnagar, about 220-230 km, 4.5 to 5 hours
An early optional safari before checkout, since dawn is consistently the grassland's most active hour and a fourth session often turns up species missed on the first three.
The drive back to Ahmedabad retraces the same Bhavnagar route; a blackbuck safari tour built around three focused days, rather than a single stop inside a longer wildlife circuit, closes here with a working species list distinctly different from anything Gir or the Rann alone could have produced.
Experience of the Day
Optional early morning safari
Drive back to Ahmedabad via Bhavnagar
Transfer to Ahmedabad airport
Food
Recommended: Breakfast at the resort before checkout.
Must-Try: A last cup of masala chai en route to Ahmedabad.

Be Responsible Traveller
- Minimize Plastic Use : Bring a reusable water bottle, shopping bag, and utensils to reduce the need for single-use plastics. Many destinations have water refill stations and eco-friendly stores.
- Support Local and Sustainable Businesses : Eat at local restaurants, buy souvenirs from local artisans, and choose tour operators that prioritize sustainable practices and support the local community.
- Respect Wildlife and Natural Habitats : Avoid disturbing wildlife or their natural habitats. Stick to designated paths and observe animals from a distance without feeding or touching them.
- Dispose of Waste Properly : Follow local guidelines for recycling and waste disposal. If facilities aren't available, carry your waste with you until you can dispose of it responsibly.
- Educate Yourself and Others : Learn about the local environment, culture, and customs. Respect local practices and traditions, and share your knowledge about responsible travel with others.
- Choose Sustainable Activities : Engage in eco-friendly activities such as hiking, snorkeling, or visiting national parks. Avoid activities that exploit animals or damage the environment.
- Leave No Trace : Follow the principle of "Leave No Trace," which means leaving natural areas as you found them. Pack out all trash, avoid picking plants, and refrain from carving or writing on rocks or trees.
- Plant Trees Whenever Possible : Participate in local tree-planting initiatives or plant trees in your own community. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and help support biodiversity, making them vital for a healthy environment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Velavadar Blackbuck National Park
We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.
Is this a genuine velavadar national park tour travellers would plan a dedicated trip around?
Yes; it's built entirely around Velavadar, with four safaris across three focused days, rather than a single stop folded into a longer Gujarat wildlife circuit.
What makes this a blackbuck safari tour worth booking specifically, rather than adding Velavadar to an existing Gir or Rann trip?
More field time at one reserve: this itinerary gives Velavadar three full days, timed around dawn wolf activity, dusk harrier roosting and blackbuck lekking, rather than a single afternoon drive-through.
Is a dedicated indian wolf safari gujarat specialists plan for realistic, or is the wolf too rare to actually see?
It's a genuine specialist target, not a guarantee; the Indian wolf remains one of Velavadar's rarer sightings even across multiple safaris with a dedicated guide, and this itinerary says so plainly rather than overpromising.
What's the harrier roost, and is it really the largest in the world?
Yes; Velavadar hosts the largest harrier roost in the world, with Pallid, Montagu's and Marsh Harriers gathering by the thousand at dusk, a genuine spectacle with no real equivalent elsewhere in this series' destinations.
Will we see the lesser florican?
Realistically, no; it's primarily a monsoon-season breeder, present mainly when the park is closed (16 June to 15 October), so this itinerary, run in the November-to-February season, doesn't list it as a target.
Why does the itinerary stop in Bhavnagar?
Bhavnagar has zero live presence anywhere in BizareXpedition's own catalogue, so this trip gives it an honest stop of its own: Takhteshwar Temple and the exterior of Nilambag Palace, with real history behind both.
How many safaris does the trip actually include?
Four: one on arrival afternoon, a dawn and an evening safari on the full day in between, and an optional final safari before departure.
How far is Velavadar from Ahmedabad?
About 220 to 230 km via Bhavnagar, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by road each way, a single comfortable driving day with no waypoint needed.
When is the best time to visit?
November to February, inside the park's 16 October to 15 June open season; the park closes completely for the monsoon from 16 June to 15 October.
Can this be combined with Gir or the Rann?
Yes; both are realistic additions on either end for guests who want to complete Gujarat's full three-ecosystem wildlife story: forest, desert and grassland.
Is sighting every species guaranteed?
No; even with a dedicated specialist guide and four safaris, sightings depend on the animals' own movement and behavior, and this itinerary doesn't promise a fixed checklist.
How much does the tour cost?
This 4-day grassland specialist trip costs about Rs.86,562 to Rs.93,487 per couple at the Premium tier, or Rs.43,281 to Rs.46,743 per person. Luxury is Rs.118,314 to Rs.127,779 per couple and Ultra-Luxury Rs.163,422 to Rs.176,496. Figures are indicative.
