Manali to Leh vs Srinagar to Leh: Which Road Trip Route Should You Choose in 2026?

The Manali Route is the one that suits adventurous souls. It is one of the most thrilling and exciting rides, from the Himachal hills to a high-altitude desert, taking a trip from Manali to Leh is nothing but a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 

With the opening of the Atal Tunnel, the journey has become more accessible for those who wish to take this expedition. But you must be prepared to go from 6,700 feet at Manali to 14,000 feet. This may cause headache and nausea. 

The Srinagar to Leh is smarter for most people. The altitude gain is gradual; you overnight in Kargil at 8,700 feet before reaching Leh, which is much kinder to your body. You also get Kashmir as part of the journey, including Sonmarg and the Drass War Memorial. Road conditions are better maintained on most sections.

 It opens earlier, too late March to April 2026, making it the only road option for spring travellers. The only rough section is around Zoji La Pass, where ongoing tunnel construction makes it slow and muddy.
