Karnaprayag - Third Prayag in Panch Prayag

Karnaprayag is located in Chamoli district, 130 Km ahead from Badrinath Temple. The merger of river Alaknanda & Pindari river happens at this place. According to legends, Karna warrior of Mahabharata, performed severe penance here to acquire impregnable shield (Kavacha & kundal) from Lord Surya. Along with religious importance, this place also offers huge opportunities to adventure lovers & avid nature enthusiast. The serenity of the place had even allure Swami Vivekananda who had mediated here for a few days.

  • Uma Temple: The temple is located at the confluence of Alaknanda & Pindari River. Goddess Parvati is the deity of temple & one of the most revered temple of the region.
  • Adi Badri: Adi Badri is a group of temples located at a distance of 17 Kms from Karnaprayag on the way to Ranikhet. Some of the temples were built during the Gupta age. It is also believed that Adi Shankara in order to foster the spread of Hinduism has sanctioned this temple. It is believed that here Maha Rishi Ved Vyas wrote Shri Mad Bhagwat Maha Puran.

Summers & winter, both are apt season to visit Karnaprayag. However avoid during monsoon due to heavy rainfall, (July till September) the place become prone to landslides. The place has severe chilling winters accompanied with snowfall hence advisable to carry warm woolen clothes.
