About

This is a Goa Karnataka tour package which can take in 8 days, You start with the beaches and Portuguese churches of Goa, slow down in the quiet temple town of Gokarna, then head inland to the ruined city of Hampi and the cave temples of Badami. It covers three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, uses four hand-picked hotels and costs from about INR 136,206 per person (twin sharing).

It is a Konkan Deccan combined trip for foreigners who want rest and sightseeing in one plan. You begin with two nights on the Goa coast, move south to the quiet beaches of Gokarna, then climb inland to the boulder-strewn plain around Hampi. The last stop is Badami, a red sandstone gorge with cave temples cut 1,400 years ago. A Goa Hampi tour package like this works because the road runs east in a single line, so you never double back.

The route is private and tailor-made. Hotels, room types and the number of nights can be changed. The longest drive is Gokarna to Hampi, about 340 km, and it fills most of Day 5.

Who This Beach and Heritage Tour Is For

  • Travellers who want rest and sightseeing in one trip, without choosing between a beach holiday and a culture tour

  • History and architecture lovers curious about the Vijayanagara empire and the early Chalukya temple builders

  • Couples looking for sea views, quiet bays and a luxury stay among the ruins

  • Photographers, for Hampi's boulder landscapes at sunrise and the red sandstone of Badami

  • Visitors with limited time who want a lot of variety in just eight days

It is less suited to those looking for Goa's party scene or a pure two-week beach break. We base you in quieter South Goa on purpose.

Two Halves of One Journey: Konkan Coast and Deccan Plateau

The trip joins two landscapes that could hardly be more different.

  • The Konkan coast is green, wet and laid-back. Goa was ruled by Portugal until 1961, so it has whitewashed churches, painted houses, fish curries and its own festivals. A little further south, Gokarna is a small pilgrim town with a string of quiet bays reached by cliff paths.

  • The Deccan plateau is dry, open and rocky. Here, the Vijayanagara kings built their great capital at Hampi, and earlier still, the Chalukya kings experimented with temple design at Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami. The drive between the two, up through the Western Ghats and out onto the plain, shows you the change from green to gold in a single day.

The Places You Will Explore

South Goa and Old Goa: churches, colour and calm beaches

You stay in Benaulim in South Goa, where the beaches are wide and the villages still keep their old churches and Portuguese-style homes. With a guide, you visit Old Goa, once the Portuguese capital. The Basilica of Bom Jesus holds the remains of St Francis Xavier, and the Se Cathedral is one of the largest churches in Asia. Afterwards you wander through Fontainhas in Panjim, where little seems to have changed since colonial times.

Gokarna: quiet bays and an ancient temple town

Gokarna is one of Karnataka's oldest pilgrimage towns, and far calmer than Goa. Its Mahabaleshwar temple is tied to a legend about the demon king Ravana and Shiva's sacred linga. The beaches are small bays tucked between headlands. A guided walk along the cliff path from Om Beach to Kudle Beach is one of the loveliest walks on this coast.

Hampi: the lost capital among the boulders

From the 14th century until 1565, Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire and one of the richest cities in the world. Today its temples, palaces and markets lie scattered across a landscape of huge granite boulders beside the Tungabhadra river. You see the stone chariot at the Vittala temple, the Lotus Mahal and elephant stables in the Royal Centre, the Ramayana carvings of the Hazara Rama temple, and the Virupaksha temple, where worship has never stopped.

Aihole and Pattadakal: where temple design was born

In the 6th and 7th centuries, Chalukya builders at Aihole tried out many different temple shapes, and you can still see their experiments standing in fields and village streets. At Pattadakal, a UNESCO site since 1987, northern and southern Indian temple styles stand side by side. The great Virupaksha temple here was built around 740 CE for a Chalukya queen and is still in use.

Badami: cave temples in red sandstone

Badami, once the Chalukya capital, sits in a red sandstone gorge. Four cave temples were cut into the cliff here, three Hindu and one Jain. Cave 3 carries an inscription dated 578 CE. From the caves you look down on Agastya Lake and the old Bhutanatha temples on its shore. It is a fitting final morning before your flight.

PRACTICAL NOTES

  • Temple and church rules: Cover shoulders and knees at churches and temples, and remove shoes at temples. Hampi's Virupaksha temple is still in daily use.

  • Dress code: Light cotton and a hat for Hampi and Badami. Swimwear stays on the beach. A light layer is useful for evenings.

  • Heat and sun: Carry water, sunscreen and a hat. Hampi and Badami are exposed, and shade is scarce.

  • Swimming: Gokarna's currents are strong and lifeguards are few. Swim only where your guide says it is safe.

  • Safety: Goa and Karnataka are among the easier regions of India to travel in. Our team is reachable 24 hours. Use ordinary care on beaches at night and in crowds.

  • Drinking water: Drink bottled or filtered water only. Your vehicle and hotels provide it.

  • Photography: Rules differ at each church, temple and cave. Your guide tells you at the entrance. Drones cannot be flown by foreign visitors.

  • Alcohol: Served at the hotels. Goa's rules are relaxed. Karnataka has some dry days, and a few small towns restrict sales.

  • Tipping: Not compulsory. As a rough guide: driver Rs.300–500 per day, guides Rs.500 per visit, hotel staff at your discretion.

  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi at the hotels. Mobile signal is weaker on the Ghat section and around Gokarna's bays.

  • Visa: Most nationalities can apply for an Indian e-Visa online before travel. Allow at least a week.

Itinerary (Day Wise)

On this trip you don’t have to choose between a beach holiday and a history trip. It starts with two easy days in South Goa, by the sea at Taj Exotica, with a morning in Old Goa among the great white churches and a wander through the painted lanes of Fontainhas in Panjim. Then you follow the coast south to Gokarna, a small pilgrim town where cliff paths link a string of quiet bays, and spend two nights above Om Beach. After that comes the one long drive, up over the Ghats onto the Deccan plateau. Hampi feels like another planet, with giant boulders piled everywhere and the ruins of an old empire’s capital spread among them. Climb Matanga Hill for sunrise, then see the stone chariot at Vittala. On the way to Badami you stop at Aihole and Pattadakal, where temple builders were trying out new ideas 1,400 years ago. You finish at the Badami cave temples, cut into red cliffs above a green lake.

Day 1

ARRIVE GOA | BENAULIM BY THE SEA

Route: Goa airport (GOI) to Benaulim, about 30 km

Your driver meets you at the airport and takes you south to Benaulim. Most overseas flights land at Dabolim (GOI), the airport near Vasco. If your flight arrives at Mopa in North Goa, tell us and we adjust the transfer, which is much longer.

South Goa is quieter than the north. The beaches are wide and the villages still keep their Catholic churches and old Portuguese houses. Taj Exotica stands beside the sea in a coconut garden.

The afternoon is free. Walk on the beach at sunset, when the fishing boats come in.

Experience of the Day

  • Airport welcome and check-in

  • Walk on Benaulim beach at sunset

Food

Recommended: Dinner at the hotel, with Goan and seafood dishes.

Must-Try: Goan fish curry with rice, made with coconut, kokum and red chilli.

Activities to Do

  • Rest after the flight

  • Swim or walk on the beach

Day 2

OLD GOA AND PANJIM | CHURCHES AND LATIN QUARTER

Route: Benaulim – Old Goa – Panjim (Fontainhas) – Benaulim, about 100 km

After breakfast, drive to Old Goa, the Portuguese capital until the 18th century. The churches and convents here have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The Basilica of Bom Jesus holds the remains of St Francis Xavier. The Se Cathedral nearby is one of the largest churches in Asia.

Drive on to Panjim and walk through Fontainhas, the old Latin Quarter. Its lanes of painted houses with balconies and tiled name plates still look much as they did in Portuguese times. Goa stayed under Portuguese rule until 1961, which is why its food, churches and festivals differ from the rest of India.

Return to the hotel by late afternoon. The evening is free.

Note on churches: Old Goa's churches are active places of worship. Cover shoulders and knees. Photography rules vary inside, and your guide confirms them at each door. Opening hours change on Sundays and feast days.

Experience of the Day

  • Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral

  • Fontainhas walk

  • Free evening on the beach

Food

Recommended: Lunch at a Panjim restaurant serving Goan Catholic food.

Must-Try: Pork vindaloo, a dish adapted from a Portuguese wine-and-garlic stew, and bebinca, a layered coconut pudding.

Shopping

Cashew nuts, spices, azulejo-style tiles and local pottery from Panjim's market.

Activities to Do

  • Optional spice plantation visit near Ponda (half day; paid separately)

  • Optional sunset cruise on the Mandovi river

Day 3

GOA TO GOKARNA | ACROSS THE STATE LINE

Route: Benaulim – Canacona – Karwar – Ankola – Gokarna, about 160 km

After breakfast, drive south on the coastal highway. You pass the Goa border, then Karwar and Ankola in Karnataka. Rivers, estuaries and green hills come down to the sea along the way. The timing depends on traffic at the border and on road works.

Gokarna is a small temple town on the coast, and one of Karnataka's oldest pilgrimage sites. Its beaches are small bays between headlands, and they are far quieter than those of Goa. SwaSwara sits above Om Beach, named for the shape of its two curved bays.

You arrive in the afternoon. The late light on the bay is the best part of the day.

Experience of the Day

  • Coastal drive from Goa into Karnataka

  • Sunset over Om Beach

Food

Recommended: Dinner at the hotel, with Karnataka coast dishes.

Must-Try: Fish curry and rice, or a plate of fresh prawns grilled with coastal spices.

Activities to Do

  • Walk to the viewpoint above the bay

  • Rest and swim where the sea is calm

Day 4

GOKARNA | TEMPLE AND BEACH WALK

Route: Om Beach – Mahabaleshwar temple – Kudle Beach – Om Beach

In the morning, visit the Mahabaleshwar temple in the old town. Legend says the demon king Ravana carried Shiva's sacred linga from the Himalayas, and the god Ganesha tricked him into putting it down here, and it could not be lifted again. Pilgrims have come for centuries, and the old town streets around the temple are still full of ritual shops.

After lunch, take a guided walk along the cliff path from Om Beach to Kudle Beach and on toward the small bays beyond. The path crosses rock and sand, and the views stay open to the sea the whole way. Boats can take you to the more remote beaches if the sea is calm.

The rest of the day is free for the beach or for the hotel's quiet gardens.

Note on the sea: Gokarna's beaches have strong currents and few lifeguards. Swim only where your guide says it is safe. From June to September the sea is rough and swimming is not advised. Temple dress is modest, and your guide tells you what is open to visitors.

Experience of the Day

  • Mahabaleshwar temple and old town

  • Guided cliff walk between beaches

  • Free beach time

Food

Recommended: Lunch at a beach cafe on Kudle or Om Beach.

Must-Try: Fresh grilled fish and coconut rice.

Shopping

Small shops in the old town sell incense, brass lamps and cotton.

Activities to Do

  • Optional yoga class at the hotel

  • Optional boat ride to a remote beach (paid separately)

Day 5

GOKARNA TO HAMPI | FROM COAST TO PLATEAU

Route: Gokarna – Ankola – Yellapur – Hubballi – Hosapete – Hampi, about 340 km

This is the longest drive of the tour, and we plan it as the main event of the day. You climb from the coast through the Western Ghats, past Yellapur and the teak forests, then come out onto the open Deccan plateau. The landscape changes from green coastal hills to dry brown plain and rock.

After Hubballi the road runs east to Hosapete (Hospet), the gateway to Hampi. The first hint of Hampi is the boulders, great rounded blocks of granite piled on the hilltops. They were shaped by millions of years of weathering, and they are why Hampi looks like no other ruined city.

You reach the hotel in the late afternoon, in time for a swim or a short walk before dinner.

Experience of the Day

  • Drive over the Ghats

  • First sight of Hampi's boulder landscape

Food

Recommended: Lunch at a roadside restaurant on the highway near Hubballi.

Must-Try: North Karnataka jowar roti with brinjal curry.

Activities to Do

  • Early dinner

  • Swim or rest after the drive

Day 6

HAMPI | THE VIJAYANAGARA CAPITAL

Route: Matanga Hill – Vittala temple – Royal Centre – Virupaksha temple – Hampi Bazaar

Start before sunrise at Matanga Hill. A climb of about 20 to 30 minutes takes you to a view over the temples, the river and the boulders in the first light. Come down for breakfast and then visit the Vittala temple.

The Vittala temple dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its best-known feature is a stone chariot in the courtyard, with wheels that look as if they could turn. The temple's carved pillars were made to give out musical notes, but they can no longer be struck, to protect them.

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire from the 14th century until 1565, when the city was sacked after the battle of Talikota. In the afternoon, walk through the Royal Centre. The Lotus Mahal and the elephant stables stand in the old palace enclosure, and the Hazara Rama temple has carvings from the Ramayana along its walls.

End the day at the Virupaksha temple, which is still a working temple, with a gateway about 50 metres tall. Hampi Bazaar runs along its front. If the evening is quiet, walk down to the river steps.

Note on Hampi: Hampi is hot from March to May, and the ruins have little shade. We start early and break in the middle of the day. Shoes come off at working temples. A river crossing by coracle or boat is offered only when water levels and local rules allow, and it is never promised.

Experience of the Day

  • Sunrise at Matanga Hill

  • Vittala temple and stone chariot

  • Royal Centre, Lotus Mahal and elephant stables

  • Virupaksha temple at dusk

Food

Recommended: Lunch at a Hampi Bazaar cafe.

Must-Try: Thali with local vegetables, or fresh sugar-cane juice.

Shopping

Stone carvings, cotton bags, Lambani embroidery and handmade jewellery from Hampi Bazaar.

Activities to Do

  • Optional visit to the Anegundi side of the river

  • Evening walk through the bazaar

Day 7

HAMPI TO BADAMI | ALONG THE CHALUKYA TRAIL

Route: Hampi – Aihole – Pattadakal – Badami, about 180 km

You leave Hampi early and drive north across the plateau to Aihole, about 140 km away. Aihole is where Chalukya builders worked in the 6th and 7th centuries, trying out different temple shapes. The Durga temple, with its apsidal end and carved columns, and the Lad Khan temple are the best known. Many smaller temples stand in fields and streets.

A short drive of about 13 km brings you to Pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The temples here show both northern and southern styles side by side. The Virupaksha temple, built around 740 CE for a Chalukya queen, is the largest. It is still in use.

Continue to Badami, about 22 km farther, and arrive in the late afternoon. Aihole and Badami are on India's tentative list for UNESCO, and Pattadakal is already listed. If light and time allow, walk to Agastya Lake at the foot of the cliffs.

Note on the day: This is a full sightseeing day with many stops, so the pace is steady. Opening times at the sites vary by season and the sun sets about 6 pm in winter. Your guide may shorten one stop if time runs short.

Experience of the Day

  • Aihole's early temples

  • Pattadakal UNESCO temples

  • Evening at Agastya Lake, if time allows

Food

Recommended: Lunch at a local restaurant near Aihole or Pattadakal.

Must-Try: Jowar roti, and Dharwad pedha, a milk sweet from nearby Dharwad.

Activities to Do

  • Rest at the hotel

  • Walk around the old town of Badami

Day 8

BADAMI AND DEPARTURE | CAVES AND THE HUBBALLI FLIGHT

Route: Badami caves – Hubballi airport (HBX), about 110 km

Walk to the Badami cave temples soon after they open. Four caves were cut into the red sandstone cliff in the 6th and 7th centuries, when Badami was the Chalukya capital, then called Vatapi. Cave 1 holds Shiva as the cosmic dancer, with 18 arms. Cave 3 is a Vishnu temple with an inscription dated 578 CE. Cave 4 is Jain. The stone is soft sandstone, so the carvers could cut deep and sharp lines.

Look down from the caves to Agastya Lake and the Bhutanatha temples on its shore. Monkeys live on the cliffs, so keep food out of sight.

After the caves, your driver takes you to Hubballi airport by road. Choose a flight that leaves after about 4:30 pm. Hubballi has flights to Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad. For an international flight the next morning, we advise one night in Bengaluru or Mumbai, which we can add.

Note on flights: Flights from Hubballi are limited, and schedules change. Confirm your departure with us before you book. If you prefer to leave from Goa, Bengaluru or Belagavi, the route can be adjusted, with a longer drive.

Experience of the Day

  • Badami cave temples

  • Agastya Lake view

  • Drive to Hubballi airport

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Goa & Karnataka: Konkan-to-Deccan Beach Tour

We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.

How many days do you need for a Goa Karnataka tour combining beaches and heritage?

Eight days is enough to see both. This plan gives two nights each in Goa, Gokarna and Hampi, and one in Badami. With two more days, add a third night in Hampi or a night at Aihole, or lengthen the beach time in Gokarna.

What is the best time to visit Goa, Hampi and Badami together?

November to February is the best time. The sea is calm, the days are dry and the ruins are comfortable to walk. March to May is very hot inland, and June to September is the monsoon, when the sea is rough and beach shacks are closed.

Is Hampi worth visiting in a Goa Karnataka tour package?

Yes, Hampi is the main reason to cross from the coast to the Deccan. It was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The temples, the river and the boulder hills together make a landscape that no other place in India offers. A Goa Hampi tour package gives you the beach first and the ruins after.

Is Gokarna better than Goa for a quiet beach stay?

Gokarna is quieter, smaller and more spiritual, while Goa is easier, more varied and has more places to eat. This plan uses both. South Goa gives a calm start, and Gokarna gives a few days of small bays and a temple town before the heritage sites begin.

How long is the drive from Gokarna to Hampi?

The Gokarna to Hampi drive is about 340 km and takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours with a lunch stop. It is the longest day of the trip. You leave by 7 am, cross the Western Ghats and reach the hotel by late afternoon. The rest of the trip has shorter drives.

Are Aihole and Badami UNESCO World Heritage Sites?

Pattadakal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1987. Aihole and Badami are on India's tentative list but are not yet inscribed. All three belong to the same Chalukya story, and we visit them in one day for that reason.

What are the Badami caves and why visit them?

The Badami caves are four rock-cut temples carved into a red sandstone cliff in the 6th and 7th centuries. One holds an 18-armed dancing Shiva, one is a Vishnu temple with an inscription dated 578 CE, and one is Jain. They are among the oldest rock-cut temples in the Deccan, and the cliff above Agastya Lake gives a fine view.

Which airport should we fly into and out of?

Fly into Goa and out of Hubballi. Most overseas flights arrive at Dabolim (GOI), and Hubballi (HBX) has flights to Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad for onward travel. Check that your Goa flight lands at Dabolim and not Mopa. If you prefer another exit, we can route to Bengaluru or back to Goa with a longer drive.

Is it safe to swim at Gokarna and Goa?

Swim only where your guide or the hotel says it is safe. Both coasts have strong currents and few lifeguards outside the main Goa beaches. Between June and September the sea is rough and swimming is not advised. Your hotel and guide will tell you the day's conditions.

How much does an 8-day Goa Karnataka tour package cost?

This 8-day trip costs about Rs.272,412 to Rs.294,205 per couple in the Premium room tier, about Rs.348,012 to Rs.375,853 for Luxury, and about Rs.489,132 to Rs.528,263 for Ultra-Luxury. Prices include the four hotels, the vehicle, guides, entries and GST. International flights and the flight from Hubballi are not included.

Do we need a visa for India?

Yes. Most nationalities can apply for an Indian e-Visa online before travel. Check which airports accept e-Visa arrivals for your nationality, and apply at least a week ahead on the official e-Visa site.

Can we add more beach time or a night in Bengaluru?

Yes. A third night in Gokarna or Goa is the easiest addition. A night in Bengaluru or Mumbai after Hubballi is useful for an international flight the next morning. Tell us your dates and we will price the extra nights.
