Your driver meets you at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Nothing is scheduled. Long-haul flights often land at night or in the early hours, and tomorrow starts at dawn.

Use the evening to check and charge gear, clear memory cards and, if you have the energy, walk the Sabarmati Riverfront near the hotel for a first look at the light. Your guide briefs you on the plan, the moon dates for the Rann nights and the rules for each location.

Route: Ahmedabad old city, then Ahmedabad to Bhuj, about 340 km, 6 to 6.5 hours by road

The day opens in the walled city. Ahmedabad became India's first UNESCO World Heritage City in 2017, and its pols, gated clusters of carved wooden houses, are quietest at first light, when the lanes are empty and the light comes in low along them. Your guide walks you in and asks residents before you photograph doorways and courtyards.

The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, built in the early 1570s, is known for its stone jali windows carved in tree-and-vine patterns. Photograph it in morning side-light, when the pierced screens throw patterned shadows. Opening hours are checked on the day.

Then the long drive north-west to Kutch, with a lunch stop on the highway. You reach Bhuj in the afternoon. There is time to walk to Hamirsar Lake, in the middle of town, for the last light.

The Human Story

The pols were built so that each community, trade or caste lived in its own gated lane. Many families still live in the houses, which is why asking before you shoot matters here.

Route: Bhuj, Bhujodi, Hodka, Dhordo, about 85 km direct, plus stops

Start at the Aina Mahal, commissioned by Rao Lakhpatji around 1750 and designed by Ram Singh Malam, a Kutchi craftsman who spent 18 years in Europe. The Hall of Mirrors is a challenge for a camera: glass, reflections and mixed light. Bring a fast prime and expect to work handheld. Photography permissions inside are confirmed on the day.

From Bhuj the road runs to Bhujodi, where Vankar families weave shawls on handlooms, and on to Hodka in the Banni grasslands, known for leather work, embroidery and mud houses with painted walls. Late morning and midday light is good for portraits in open shade. Ask first, and expect to buy something if you spend time in a workshop.

You reach Dhordo in the afternoon. The salt is best photographed at sunset, which falls at about 6:15 to 6:30 pm in November to January. Plan to be on the White Rann by about 5:00 pm to choose your position and watch the colour change. Tonight is one day before the full moon on the recommended departure dates, so the moon is already up as the sun sets.

Note: The White Rann is a border zone. Every visitor needs an entry permit, and foreign nationals give passport and Indian visa details. We apply before you arrive. Do not bring a drone; see Practical Notes.

The Human Story

The Bhujodi weavers and Hodka artisans sell from their own homes. A portrait taken with permission, and a purchase, is a fair exchange.

Route: Dhordo and the Banni grasslands, local drives of about 40 km

This is the day the trip is built around. Sunrise camel rides on the salt start at about 6:30 am. Bring a 200 to 400 mm lens for silhouettes against the low sun, and a wider lens for the horizon, where a single figure gives the scale the flat salt lacks.

After breakfast, spend the morning in the Banni villages. From about 9 am to noon the sun gives side-light that suits portraits of the herders and artisans who live there. Ask, and accept a no. Return to camp for lunch and a rest, when the light is flat and hard.

In the afternoon go back out to the salt. Arrive about 5:00 pm for sunset. On the full-moon dates, be in position about 20 minutes before moonrise. For night work, use a tripod, ISO 800 to 3200, f/2.8 to f/4 and exposures of 2 to 10 seconds. Do not use flash on the salt at night. Night-sky shooting is planned from the Tent City side, and access hours are confirmed on site.

Note: Optional Photographer's Day (priced separately): the same day with a dedicated photography vehicle and guide, earlier and later access where permitted, and a second sunset position. Kala Dungar, the highest point in Kutch, uses the same permit and is offered as a sunset alternative.

Route: Dhordo, Bhuj, Rajkot, about 343 km, 6.5 to 7 hours by road

Shoot one more sunrise on the salt, then have breakfast and leave. The road returns to Bhuj, then runs south-east out of Kutch and across the top of Saurashtra to Rajkot.

Dhordo to Gir in one day would be about 450 to 500 km and arrive after dark, so Rajkot is a planned stop. It also breaks the drive into two sensible days and puts you within 160 km of Junagadh for tomorrow.

Rajkot is a working city rather than a photography destination. If you arrive with light left, your guide can take you to Kaba Gandhi No Delo, the house where Mahatma Gandhi lived as a boy, now a museum. Otherwise, back up your cards and rest.

Note: This is the longest drive of the trip. The route listed for this package ran Dhordo straight to Gir, which is not realistic in one day, so this stop adds a night.

Route: Rajkot, Junagadh, Sasan Gir, about 157 km, 3.5 to 4 hours plus stops

Junagadh is the architecture stop of the trip. The Mahabat Maqbara, begun in 1878 by Nawab Mahabat Khan II and completed in 1892 under Nawab Bahadur Khan III, mixes Indo-Islamic, Gothic and European styles. Its minarets have spiralling external staircases and its domes are onion-shaped, with marble jali work and silver doors. It is open from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm. Come in the afternoon and shoot into the evening; a wide lens gets the facade and a longer one isolates the minaret spirals.

Next door is the Bahauddin Maqbara, built between 1891 and 1896, and the Jama Masjid and Uparkot Fort are nearby. Your guide chooses which to shoot and in which order for the light on the day.

From Junagadh it is about 55 km to Sasan Gir. Check in, prepare your cameras for tomorrow's safari and sleep early.

Note: Tripod rules at Junagadh's monuments are not published, so your guide asks on the day. A monopod or handheld work is the safe assumption.

Gir is the only place in the world where wild Asiatic lions live. The 2025 census counted 891 lions, up from 674 in 2020. You go in on two safaris today, morning and afternoon, each in a different zone if the permits allow.

Safari rules shape how you photograph. The vehicle carries a licensed forest guide and driver and must stay on the route printed on the permit. Occupants stay seated. You cannot leave the track, call an animal or ask the driver to reposition off the route. What you can do is ask the driver to stop and turn off the engine when a sighting is on your side of the vehicle, and then wait. Vehicles often queue at a sighting, so patience and a long lens matter more than position.

Pack a 200 to 400 mm lens or a 100 to 400 mm zoom and a beanbag for the door frame. Tripod and monopod use is set by the forest department and by vehicle type. We confirm before departure and do not promise either. Light inside the forest is dappled, so raise ISO and shoot at a fast shutter speed.

Note: Sightings are never guaranteed. Safari permits are released about 90 days ahead, and we book them as soon as dates are confirmed. Jeep seating and whether you can book a whole vehicle are confirmed at booking.

Route: Sasan Gir to Diu, about 100 km, 2 to 2.5 hours by road

Take a dawn safari on the third permit. The early light is the softest of the trip, and animals are often most active then.

After breakfast, drive to Diu, a small island Union Territory off the Saurashtra coast that was Portuguese until 1961. It has a different feel from the rest of Gujarat: quieter, lower-rise and open to alcohol. Check in and spend the late afternoon at the harbour, where fishing boats come in.

Diu's Portuguese fort, the Church of St Paul and the harbour are the main subjects. Your guide scouts the light for each on arrival.

Note: Diu photo-light timings are not source-verified for this document, so the guide plans the shoots on site rather than from a fixed schedule.

Route: Diu, local drives of about 30 km

Today is for colonial architecture and coastline. Diu Fort, a 16th-century Portuguese fort, has thick sea walls, cannons and a lighthouse. The Church of St Paul is a Baroque church, and the old town's streets have Portuguese-era houses.

Beyond the town, the Naida Caves are old quarry chambers with shafts of light in them, and Nagoa Beach is a long, gently curved beach with palm trees. The Gangeshwar Temple has Shiva lingams on the shore, washed by the tide. Your guide picks the tide and the light for each.

This is the rest day of the trip. After Gir's early starts, a midday break is built in.

A long drive back to Ahmedabad. A daily Diu to Ahmedabad flight is reported, taking about an hour and a quarter, and can be quoted as an alternative. Schedules change by season.

You reach the city in the late afternoon. Ahmedabad's Jama Masjid, built in 1424 under Sultan Ahmed Shah, and the Teen Darwaza gate near it, are good subjects at dusk. The old-city night market at Manek Chowk lights up after dark and is a good place for street photography.

Note: Manek Chowk is crowded at night, so carry only one camera and lens and keep your bag close.

Route: Ahmedabad, Adalaj Stepwell, Kevadia, about 215 km, 4 to 4.5 hours

Adalaj Stepwell, about 20 km north of Ahmedabad, was completed in 1498 and commissioned by Queen Rudabai. It is open from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, and foreign visitors pay Rs.250. The best light is 6 to 9 am or 3 to 6 pm. Around midday, direct sun falls into the shaft and flattens the carving. Bring a wide lens. Tripod rules are not published, so we ask on the day.

From Adalaj, drive to Kevadia, about 200 km, in about four hours. You arrive after lunch. In the late afternoon, the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the Tent City area are options for sunset, and a boat ride at golden hour is possible.

In the evening, the Statue of Unity has a laser show. Availability varies by day and season.

The Statue of Unity is 182 metres tall, opened on 31 October 2018 and is the tallest statue in the world. The viewing gallery is at 153 metres. The complex is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and closed every Monday, including holidays. The trip is dated so that this day never falls on a Monday.

Photograph the statue from the Tent City side at sunrise if the light is good, then go to the gallery when it opens. A wide lens is needed for the base, and a telephoto gets the face.

Leave for Vadodara airport by late morning. Book an onward flight after about 3:00 pm.
