Arrive early enough for a short walk toward Thajiwas Glacier if energy and weather allow, though the day is intentionally light on activity. Overnight in Sonamarg.

Route: Sonamarg – Zoji La Pass – Drass – Kargil (approx. 140 Kms / 6–7 Hrs)

The circuit's first major crossing: Zoji La, at roughly 3,528 metres, marks the boundary between Kashmir's green valleys and Ladakh's stark high-altitude desert — the change in landscape either side of the pass is genuinely abrupt, trees and grass giving way to bare rock within a few kilometres. Descend into Drass, recorded as the second coldest inhabited place on earth after Siberia's Oymyakon, and site of the Kargil War Memorial, a sober stop commemorating the 1999 conflict fought in these mountains. Continue to Kargil for the night — lower in altitude than Zoji La itself, following the acclimatisation principle of sleeping low after climbing high. Overnight in Kargil.

The longest and most rewarding drive of the circuit. Stop first at Mulbekh, where a 9-metre Maitreya Buddha is carved directly into a roadside rock face, dating to roughly the 7th or 8th century. Continue to Lamayuru, one of Ladakh's oldest and most dramatically sited monasteries, perched above a landscape of eroded badlands so otherworldly it's known locally as 'Moonland.' Alchi follows — unusual among Ladakh's monasteries for sitting on flat ground rather than a hilltop, and prized for 11th-century wall paintings in a distinctly Kashmiri artistic style, older and more delicate than most of what survives elsewhere in the region. Route: Leh — Deliberately Unstructured

A dedicated rest day, and the single most important day on the itinerary from a safety standpoint — Leh sits at roughly 3,500 metres, and pushing straight into Khardung La or Pangong without at least one full day to acclimatise is the most common cause of altitude sickness among Ladakh travellers. The day is intentionally light: short walks in Leh town, plenty of water, no alcohol, and no strenuous activity. A brief visit to Leh Market in the late afternoon, once the body has had most of the day to adjust, is about as much as is recommended. Overnight in Leh.

The descent into Nubra Valley is dramatic — from bare high-altitude rock down into a river valley wide enough to hold small sand dunes, an landscape more reminiscent of Central Asia than anywhere else in India. Visit Diskit Monastery, Nubra's oldest and largest, home to a towering 32-metre Maitreya Buddha statue facing down the valley toward Pakistan, before continuing to Hunder for the sand dunes, where double-humped Bactrian camels — a species otherwise found only in Central Asia, a legacy of the old Silk Route trade through this valley — are available for a short ride.
