About
The Kerala Grand Wildlife Circuit is the most ambitious private wildlife itinerary in the K-series — nine days that trace the full arc of the Nilgiri Biosphere, from the high-altitude tea hills of Munnar to the tiger forests of Karnataka's finest reserves. This is not a general Kerala holiday with a wildlife add-on. Every destination has been chosen for its wildlife value, and every safari is private — your own jeep, your own naturalist guide, your own timing. No shared canters, no group safaris, no fixed departure slots.
The circuit moves through five distinct wildlife ecosystems in sequence. Munnar and Eravikulam open with the Nilgiri Tahr's high-altitude grassland habitat. Thekkady and Periyar provide two days with one of India's largest wild elephant herds — a private jeep safari at dawn on Day 3 followed by a full day at Gavi on Day 4, one of Kerala's most pristine eco-tourism reserves, accessible only by permit, where lion-tailed macaques, hornbills, and the dense Cardamom Hills evergreen forest give a wildlife experience of a completely different character from the Periyar lake system. Wayanad follows with a private jeep safari in the Wildlife Sanctuary — the Muthanga and Tholpetty zones are part of the same Nilgiri Biosphere that continues unbroken into Karnataka — and the 5,000-year-old Edakkal Caves add a prehistoric human dimension to the natural history.
The final two wildlife nights cross into Karnataka for Nagarhole and Bandipur — two of the most productive tiger habitats in India and part of the same unbroken forest corridor that connects to Wayanad. The Kabini Backwater at Nagarhole, where the Kabini River backs up behind a dam into a submerged forest frequented by elephants, gaur, leopards, and tigers in the evening light, is one of the world's most celebrated wildlife photography locations. Bandipur's western sector, with its mix of dry deciduous forest and grassland edge, gives a different forest character for the final safari morning before the return drive to Kochi.

Stay: Premium hill resort, Munnar — Night 1 (upgradeable to 5-star tea-estate resort or luxury private pool villa).
Upon arrival at Kochi, your dedicated driver begins the Kerala Grand Wildlife Circuit with the scenic drive to Munnar — 130 km through the full vertical range of the Western Ghats. Leaving the coastal lowlands, the road rises through rubber estates, rice paddies, and dense spice forest before the landscape opens into Munnar's wide tea estate geography. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls for photography. Arrive in Munnar by evening, check in, and rest. The pace tomorrow morning is early. Overnight in Munnar.

Travel: Private AC vehicle for the full-day Munnar sightseeing circuit — no group timings.
Stay: Same premium hill resort, Munnar — Night 2.
After breakfast, spend a full day at Munnar's finest sites. Begin at Eravikulam National Park (Rajamalai) — the primary habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr, a stocky wild goat found at this altitude almost nowhere else in the world. The park's open rolling grassland above the treeline is the circuit's first genuine wildlife habitat: the Tahr are habituated to human presence and can be closely observed on the marked walking paths, and the ridge views on clear mornings extend across multiple Ghats layers. Continue to the KDHP Tea Museum for the full story of Munnar's British-era plantation economy — archive photographs, antique machinery, and a live demonstration of the withering, rolling, fermentation, and drying stages of tea processing. Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, and Kundala Lake complete the day at a relaxed pace. Return to Munnar town for an evening market walk and tea tasting. Overnight in Munnar.
Wildlife at Eravikulam
Nilgiri Tahr — stocky Himalayan wild goat; habituated to humans on the park trail; found at this altitude almost nowhere else

Day 3
MUNNAR – THEKKADY | PRIVATE PERIYAR JEEP SAFARI, BOAT SAFARI & SPICE WALK
Route: Munnar – Thekkady (Periyar), 95 Kms / approx. 4 Hrs
Travel: Private AC vehicle through spice plantations and Western Ghats forest roads. Private jeep (Gypsy) with expert naturalist for Periyar safari — not shared.
Stay: Premium forest-edge resort, Thekkady — Night 3 (upgradeable to 5-star Periyar-adjacent resort or Spice Village CGH Earth).
After breakfast, drive 95 km from Munnar to Thekkady through the spice-scented Western Ghats — cardamom estates, pepper-vine forest, and the dense teak country that announces the approach to the Periyar reserve. On arrival, proceed directly to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary for the private jeep safari. Your expert naturalist tracks elephant movement (Periyar has one of India's largest wild herds, estimated at over 900 individuals), reads alarm calls from the Malabar giant squirrel and sambar, and navigates the zones based on fresh morning signs. Beyond elephants, Periyar holds gaur, leopard, sloth bear, dhole (Indian wild dog), lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, mugger crocodile, and over 265 bird species including the Malabar grey hornbill and great Indian hornbill. Follow the jeep safari with a Kerala Forest Department boat safari on Periyar Lake — a 26 sq km reservoir where elephants frequently wade to the shallows and painted storks nest in the dead trees rising from the water. The boat safari offers a completely different view of the same ecosystem. In the afternoon, walk a guided spice plantation in the Kumily area — cardamom growing in forest shade, pepper vines climbing their host trees, cinnamon bark before it is dried. Overnight in Thekkady.
Wildlife You May Spot
Asian Elephant — one of India's largest wild herds; frequently at lake edges and forest clearings
Gaur (Indian Bison) — world's largest wild cattle; forest clearings in the morning light
Leopard — present but elusive; private jeep gives the best chance
Dhole (Indian Wild Dog) — pack hunters; one of Periyar's most exciting sightings
Lion-Tailed Macaque — endemic primate of the Western Ghats; canopy species
Malabar Grey Hornbill and Great Indian Hornbill — the forest's most visible large birds; distinctive calls
Mugger Crocodile — on the lake shores and inlets during the boat safari
Food — Where to Eat & What to Try
Grand Thekkady Café — multi-cuisine with forest surroundings
Spice Garden Restaurant — authentic Kerala meals on banana leaf
Coffee Routes — light bites, fresh spice-infused coffee
Must-try: pepper chicken (local pepper makes a tangible difference), fresh cardamom filter coffee, Kerala vegetarian sadya on banana leaf
Shopping — Where & What to Buy
Kumily Spice Market — best buying time is after the plantation walk
Government-approved spice outlets — fixed-price, quality-assured
What to buy: whole green cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom honey, organic spice blends
Activities to Do
Private jeep safari inside Periyar Tiger Reserve with expert naturalist
Kerala Forest Department boat safari on Periyar Lake

Day 4
GAVI FULL DAY ECO-TOURISM | CARDAMOM HILLS RAINFOREST & WILDERNESS
Route: Thekkady – Gavi – Thekkady (approx. 160 Kms round trip / Full Day)
Travel: Private AC vehicle to the Gavi forest entry point; private jeep inside Gavi eco-reserve with forest department guide. All permits handled by the coordinator.
Stay: Same premium forest resort, Thekkady — Night 4.
After an early breakfast, depart for a full-day excursion to Gavi — one of Kerala's most pristine and least-visited eco-tourism destinations, located 80 km from Thekkady in the Cardamom Hills of the Pathanamthitta forest division. Gavi is accessible only by forest department permit, which strictly limits the daily number of visitors and ensures the reserve retains a quality of wilderness rarely available in South India's more visited parks. The drive itself is through a spectacular evergreen forest corridor — the Sabarimala pilgrimage route passes through this forest, and the corridor is part of the same Nilgiri Biosphere system that connects Periyar, Wayanad, Nagarhole, and Bandipur in a single unbroken landscape. Gavi's forest type is dense tropical wet evergreen — darker, taller, and denser than Periyar's mixed deciduous-tropical forest, with a very different species composition. The lion-tailed macaque, one of the world's most endangered primates, is regularly sighted here in the tall canopy. The great Indian hornbill is common. Nilgiri langur, Malabar giant squirrel, gaur, and occasional elephants are all recorded. A private jeep safari covers the forest trails in the morning, followed by soft-trekking through designated forest paths with a forest guide. Gavi Lake — a scenic reservoir set in the forest with no development on its banks — is one of the finest migratory bird habitats in the Western Ghats, with Eurasian wigeon, northern pintail, and common teal visiting in winter. Return to Thekkady by evening. Overnight in Thekkady.
Experience of the Day
Gavi — permit-based access limits visitors to a fraction of Periyar's numbers; wilderness quality that cannot be found in an open-access park
Dense Western Ghats wet evergreen forest — a completely different ecosystem from Periyar's mixed deciduous
Lion-tailed macaque in the tall canopy — one of the world's most endangered primates; Gavi is one of the best places to observe them
Great Indian Hornbill — the largest hornbill in India; frequently calling and flying through the Gavi canopy
Gavi Lake — a forested reservoir with no development; migratory birds in winter; exceptional tranquillity
Wildlife You May Spot at Gavi
Lion-Tailed Macaque — critically endangered primate; one of the most reliable sighting locations in South India
Great Indian Hornbill — the flagship bird of the Western Ghats; the wing noise alone is remarkable in flight
Malabar Giant Squirrel — India's largest squirrel; bright chestnut and cream; visible in the forest canopy
Nilgiri Langur — dark-coated leaf monkey; endemic to the Western Ghats
Asian Elephant — seasonal movement through the forest corridor
Gaur (Indian Bison) — frequent in the forest clearings; the world's largest wild cattle
Migratory ducks at Gavi Lake (winter season): Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Pintail, Common Teal
Food — Where to Eat & What to Try
Early breakfast at resort before departure — the drive to Gavi is long
Gavi Forest Department canteen — simple, freshly prepared Kerala vegetarian meals; rice, sambar, vegetable curries; the food here is functional but the setting is extraordinary
Carry packed snacks and water — the forest has no commercial food stalls
Dinner: Spice Garden Restaurant or resort dining in Thekkady on return
Activities to Do
Private jeep safari through Gavi forest trails with forest department guide
Soft-trekking through designated forest paths
Gavi Lake birdwatching — especially productive in winter mornings
Wildlife photography — the forest light in the morning hours is the best in the circuit
Important Notes on Gavi
Gavi entry requires advance permit booking through the Kerala Forest Department — handled by BizareXpedition's coordinator
Mobile network is absent inside the reserve — inform family before departing
Carry sun protection, insect repellent, and sturdy walking shoes for the forest trail
The Sabarimala pilgrim season (Nov–Jan) can affect permit availability — book at least 4 weeks in advance
Optional Nearby Excursions
Sabarimala base camp viewpoint (outside the main temple route) — the forest approach is significant even for non-pilgrims
Konni Elephant Training Centre (Pathanamthitta, 60 km from Gavi) — ethical elephant facility; worth a stop if returning via Kottayam route
Day 5
THEKKADY – WAYANAD | WESTERN GHATS FOREST TRAVERSE
Route: Thekkady – Wayanad (approx. 270 Kms / 7.5 Hrs) via Kothamangalam – Thodupuzha – Kalpetta
Travel: Private AC vehicle for the full inter-hill traverse through the Western Ghats interior. Comfort stop at Kothamangalam or Thodupuzha.
Stay: Premium jungle / treehouse resort, Wayanad — Night 5 (upgradeable to 5-star forest resort or luxury treehouse villa with private deck).
After breakfast, begin the traverse from Thekkady to Wayanad — 270 km through the Western Ghats interior. The route corrected from the original: it does not pass through Thrissur (which is in the wrong direction). Instead, the correct route descends north through Kothamangalam, crosses the Periyar River valley, and climbs to Wayanad's high plateau via the Thodupuzha–Kalpetta road. The drive takes approximately 7.5 hours with a comfort stop for lunch. The Periyar River valley near Kothamangalam is wide and agricultural, offering a complete landscape contrast to the forest hills on both sides. Wayanad arrives gradually — the forest thickening, the temperature dropping, the air changing quality as you enter the most consistently forested district in Kerala. Arrive by evening, check in to the jungle or treehouse resort, and rest before the wildlife day tomorrow. Overnight in Wayanad.
Experience of the Day
The correct Western Ghats traverse — not via Thrissur (wrong direction) but via Kothamangalam; 270 km of forest interior
The Periyar River valley near Kothamangalam — wide paddy plains and river crossing; a landscape pause between two forest systems
Wayanad arrival — the forest thickening and temperature dropping as the plateau is reached
Rest and preparation for tomorrow's safari — the most important day for zone booking confirmation
Food — Where to Eat & What to Try
Lunch en route: Thodupuzha or Kothamangalam — clean local restaurant; Kerala thali and filter coffee
Wayanad dinner: 1980's A Nostalgic Restaurant — traditional Kerala flavours; popular and reliable
Wilton Restaurant (Kalpetta) — multi-cuisine; family-friendly
Must-try on arrival: Wayanad forest honey (government-authorized stalls near resorts), herbal tea infusions
Activities to Do
Resort nature walk on arrival (where available)
Sunset viewpoint near the resort if arrival is early enough
Naturalist briefing at the resort — Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary zones and current sightings
Early rest recommended for tomorrow's 5 am safari departure
Optional Nearby Excursions
Pookode Lake (20 km) — natural freshwater lake in forest; pedal boating
Lakkidi View Point — dramatic valley panorama on the Kozhikode–Wayanad road
Day 6
WAYANAD WILDLIFE DAY | PRIVATE JEEP SAFARI, EDAKKAL CAVES & PHANTOM ROCK
Route: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Muthanga / Tholpetty) – Edakkal Caves (25 Kms + Trek) – Phantom Rock (5 Kms)
Travel: Private jeep safari at the wildlife sanctuary — not shared with other guests. Private AC vehicle for the afternoon sightseeing circuit.
Stay: Same jungle / treehouse resort, Wayanad — Night 6.
Begin before dawn with a private jeep safari at Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary — either the Muthanga zone in the south or Tholpetty zone in the north, depending on current sighting reports and zone permit availability. Muthanga is the larger and more open zone, with better elephant and gaur visibility. Tholpetty, bordering Nagarhole, is denser and more productive for birds and occasionally leopard. Wayanad's wildlife corridor is part of the same unbroken Nilgiri Biosphere that the circuit will enter tomorrow in Nagarhole — the elephants and gaur crossing between these zones are the same populations, and understanding this contiguous landscape is what distinguishes a wildlife naturalist's experience from a standard safari. After the morning safari and breakfast, drive to the Edakkal Caves — a natural rock split in the Ambukuthi Hills above Ambalavayal, accessible by a 45-minute trek. The caves contain Neolithic and Mesolithic petroglyphs dating back at least 5,000 years — the oldest human heritage in the Nilgiri Biosphere circuit. Continue to Phantom Rock for photography before returning to the resort. Overnight in Wayanad.
Wildlife You May Spot at Wayanad
Asian Elephant — the dominant species in both zones; large herds recorded at Muthanga waterholes
Gaur (Indian Bison) — frequently seen on forest roads in the early morning
Spotted Deer (Chital) and Sambar — in open grassland edges at both zones
Indian Leopard — present; Tholpetty gives marginally better leopard chances due to rocky terrain
Wild Boar, Jungle Cat, Indian Porcupine — common in the forest undergrowth
Birds (300+ species): Indian Peafowl, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Crested Serpent Eagle, Malabar Trogon
Experience of the Day
Private dawn jeep safari — your own zone, your own timing, your own naturalist; no shared vehicle
Understanding the Nilgiri Biosphere corridor — Wayanad connects to Nagarhole; the same wildlife populations cross the state border
Edakkal Caves — 5,000-year-old petroglyphs; the oldest human heritage in the circuit
Phantom Rock — geological curiosity; forest photography
The contrast between morning wildlife and afternoon prehistoric heritage — the circuit's most diverse day
Food — Where to Eat & What to Try
Pre-safari: light breakfast at the resort before 5 am departure — tea, toast, banana
Post-safari breakfast: 1980's Restaurant or Wilton Restaurant — Kerala thali or appam with stew
Near Edakkal: local tea stalls — cardamom tea and banana chips
Must-try: Bamboo rice (seasonal, at tribal stalls near Ambalavayal); Wayanad forest honey with warm rice
Activities to Do
Private dawn jeep safari at Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
Edakkal Caves trek and petroglyph viewing
Phantom Rock photography
Optional: Soochipara Waterfalls (18 km) if afternoon timing allows
Optional Nearby Excursions
En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village — Adivasi cultural interaction; bamboo rice demonstration; bamboo craft; near Ambalavayal
Wayanad Heritage Museum (Ambalavayal) — finest tribal artefact collection in Kerala; 2 km from Edakkal
Thirunelli Temple (35 km) — ancient Vishnu temple in deep forest; one of Kerala's most atmospheric settings
Day 7
WAYANAD – NAGARHOLE (KABINI) | INTO KARNATAKA'S FINEST TIGER RESERVE
Route: Wayanad – Kabini / Nagarhole National Park (approx. 120 Kms / 4 Hrs)
Travel: Private AC vehicle for the Wayanad–Kabini drive through coffee plantation roads and forest corridor. Private jeep safari at Kabini — not a shared canter.
Stay: Luxury jungle lodge, Kabini / Nagarhole — Night 7 (upgradeable to Evolve Back Kabini or luxury tented villa on the Kabini River — among the finest wildlife properties in South India).
After breakfast, drive 120 km from Wayanad into Karnataka to Kabini — the most celebrated wildlife location in the Grand Circuit. Kabini is technically within Nagarhole National Park, at the point where the Kabini River backs up behind the Kabini Dam to form a shallow reservoir that floods sections of the former riparian forest, creating a submerged woodland of bare trunks rising from still water. This habitat is exceptional for wildlife: the dry season draws elephants, gaur, leopards, and tigers to the water's edge in numbers and at close range that are rare in denser forest. Arrive at your lodge by early afternoon, rest, and proceed for the evening jeep safari — the golden-hour light at Kabini, with the forest reflected in the backwater and the animals silhouetted against the evening sky, is one of the most photographed wildlife scenes in India. Your private jeep allows you to stay at productive locations as long as the guide judges it appropriate, rather than being moved on by a shared vehicle's group consensus. Overnight at Kabini.
Experience of the Day
Kabini Backwater at dusk — the submerged forest, the golden light, the animals at the water's edge; one of the world's most celebrated wildlife photography settings
Private jeep safari — your own timing, your own naturalist, no group to negotiate with
The quality of Kabini's lodge properties — among the finest wilderness accommodations in South India
The Nilgiri Biosphere narrative completing itself: Periyar → Gavi → Wayanad → Nagarhole / Kabini — one unbroken forest landscape across two states
Wildlife You May Spot at Kabini
Bengal Tiger — Nagarhole has one of the highest tiger densities in India; Kabini backwater area is a prime sighting location
Indian Leopard — frequently seen near the backwater edges and rocky terrain
Asian Elephant — large herds visit the Kabini backwater in the evening; some of the largest concentration in India during dry season
Gaur (Indian Bison) — regularly seen at the forest edges around the backwater
Marsh Mugger Crocodile — along the Kabini backwater edges; large individuals common
Wild Dog (Dhole) — packs sighted regularly near the backwater grasslands
Birds: Crested Serpent Eagle, Changeable Hawk-Eagle, Woolly-Necked Stork, Bar-Headed Goose (winter)
Food — Where to Eat & What to Try
All meals at the Kabini lodge — most properties offer full board; the food at Evolve Back and Orange County Kabini is of a high standard
Karnataka-style thali at the lodge — ragi mudde, bisi bele bath, coconut-based curries
Campfire dinner at the lodge (where offered) — one of the most atmospheric meals of the circuit
Local Coorg coffee — the Kodagu region's renowned coffee is served at most Kabini properties
Activities to Do
Evening private jeep safari at Kabini / Nagarhole
Sunset photography at the Kabini Backwater
Lodge nature walk with in-house naturalist
Wildlife documentary or tracking session at the lodge (where offered)
Optional Nearby Excursions
Kabini Backwater boat ride — many lodges offer a sunrise boat on the backwater; the low angle of light and the close approach to elephants make this worth adding
Irupu Falls (seasonal) — forest waterfall accessible from within Nagarhole; day trip from the lodge
Day 8
NAGARHOLE – BANDIPUR NATIONAL PARK | NILGIRI BIOSPHERE CORRIDOR
Route: Nagarhole / Kabini – Bandipur National Park (approx. 90 Kms / 3 Hrs)
Travel: Morning private jeep safari at Nagarhole before checkout. Private AC vehicle through the Nilgiri Biosphere corridor to Bandipur. Afternoon private jeep safari at Bandipur.
Stay: Premium jungle lodge, Bandipur — Night 8 (upgradeable to Bandipur Safari Lodge or JLR Bandipur luxury property).
Begin before dawn with the morning private jeep safari at Kabini / Nagarhole — tigers are most active in the first hour of light, and a dawn safari at Kabini gives the best possible chance at a sighting. After the safari and breakfast, checkout and drive 90 km through the wildlife corridor to Bandipur — a drive that passes through the Nilgiri Biosphere landscape and may yield roadside elephant, chital, and peacock sightings en route. Bandipur National Park is India's first Project Tiger reserve, established in 1974, and forms the southern end of the Nilgiri Biosphere chain. Its western sector has a mix of dry deciduous forest, teak plantation, and grassland edge that gives a very different visual character from Kabini's riverine backwater setting. Arrive at Bandipur by midday, check in, and take the afternoon jeep safari — typically covering the eastern zones where the forest opens into grassland and the chance of tiger sighting in the open is higher. The Moyar River gorge, which marks the boundary between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, is visible from the southern safari circuits and provides dramatic topography. Overnight at Bandipur.
Wildlife You May Spot at Bandipur
Bengal Tiger — Bandipur was India's first tiger reserve; sighting rate improves in the dry season (March–June)
Indian Leopard — frequently seen in the rocky terrain near the Moyar gorge
Asian Elephant — large herds particularly in the eastern grassland sector
Gaur and Chital — common throughout the park; large concentrations in the grassland edges
Wild Dog (Dhole) — pack sightings in the more open western sectors
Birds: Indian Peacock (abundant), Crested Hawk-Eagle, Black-headed Ibis, Spot-billed Pelican at waterholes
Experience of the Day
Dawn private jeep at Kabini — the best possible start; tigers most active at first light over the backwater
The corridor drive — Nagarhole to Bandipur through continuous forest; a reminder that this is one landscape, not separate parks
Bandipur's dry deciduous forest character — different light, different trees, different atmosphere from Kabini's riverine habitat
Two safaris in two different tiger reserves in a single day — the most wildlife-intensive day of the circuit
Food — Where to Eat & What to Try
Pre-safari breakfast at Kabini lodge — light, early
En route Bandipur: highway restaurant near Gundlupet or Gudalur — Karnataka-style meals
Bandipur lodge dinner — ragi mudde (finger millet balls) with sambar is the local specialty; local forest honey
JLR Bandipur / Bandipur Safari Lodge dining — both offer good Karnataka and continental options
Activities to Do
Morning private jeep safari at Nagarhole / Kabini (pre-checkout)
Afternoon private jeep safari at Bandipur
Lodge nature walk or birdwatching session
Campfire and wildlife photography review evening
Optional Nearby Excursions
Mudumalai buffer zone visit (Tamil Nadu side, 15 km) — the same biosphere continues; brief drive for a different perspective
Moyar River viewpoint — visible from the southern safari circuit; dramatic gorge topography
Bandipur Interpretation Centre — brief but informative introduction to the park's conservation history
Day 9
BANDIPUR – THRISSUR – KOCHI | DEPARTURE
Route: Bandipur – Perinthalmanna (120 Kms) – Thrissur (60 Kms) – Kochi (80 Kms) | Total approx. 260 Kms / 7 Hrs
Travel: Private AC vehicle for the full return drive — forest to coast transition with comfort stops at Perinthalmanna and Thrissur.
Stay: —
After an early breakfast and checkout at Bandipur, begin the 260 km return drive to Kochi for departure. The route descends from Karnataka's dry forest plateau through the Ghats, crosses the Nilambur valley, and enters Kerala through Malappuram district at Perinthalmanna — the forest-to-coast transition completing itself over 7 hours. A lunch stop at Perinthalmanna breaks the journey at a pleasant market town on the banks of the Kadalundi River. Continue to Thrissur, the Cultural Capital of Kerala — if departure timing allows, a brief stop at Vadakkumnathan Temple, one of Kerala's finest Shiva temples at the centre of Thrissur Round, and the site of the annual Thrissur Pooram festival (considered the finest temple festival in India), is worthwhile. Continue 80 km to Kochi for the drop-off at Cochin International Airport or Ernakulam Railway Station, completing the Kerala Grand Wildlife Circuit — nine days and five wildlife ecosystems from the Nilgiri Tahr's alpine grasslands to the Bengal tiger's dry-forest country.
Experience of the Day
The forest-to-coast transition — Karnataka's dry forest giving way to Kerala's green rainforest belt over 120 km from Bandipur to Perinthalmanna
Thrissur stopover — the cultural capital of Kerala; Vadakkumnathan Temple in the city centre
The satisfying arc of the complete circuit: Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → Gavi → Wayanad → Nagarhole/Kabini → Bandipur → Kochi
Nine days; five distinct wildlife ecosystems; the Nilgiri Biosphere experienced from one end to the other
Food — Where to Eat & What to Try
Perinthalmanna: local highway restaurants — clean Kerala thali with fish curry and matta rice
Thrissur: Bharath Hotel or Payammal Restaurant — traditional Kerala sadya; Thrissur is known for Elisseri (yam and lentil curry) and Unnakai (banana fritters with coconut filling)
Last Kerala purchase before the airport: banana chips and jackfruit chips fresh-fried at a Thrissur tea stall
Activities to Do
Vadakkumnathan Temple brief visit at Thrissur (if departure timing allows)
Thrissur Round walk — the circular road around the temple; Kerala's finest urban heritage precinct
Final souvenir shopping at Thrissur or Kochi
Optional Nearby Excursions
Thrissur Zoo and Museum — if travelling with children and arrival in Kochi is not time-pressed
Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple (Thrissur district) — one of Kerala's most ancient and historically significant temples

Be Responsible Traveller
- Minimize Plastic Use : Bring a reusable water bottle, shopping bag, and utensils to reduce the need for single-use plastics. Many destinations have water refill stations and eco-friendly stores.
- Support Local and Sustainable Businesses : Eat at local restaurants, buy souvenirs from local artisans, and choose tour operators that prioritize sustainable practices and support the local community.
- Respect Wildlife and Natural Habitats : Avoid disturbing wildlife or their natural habitats. Stick to designated paths and observe animals from a distance without feeding or touching them.
- Dispose of Waste Properly : Follow local guidelines for recycling and waste disposal. If facilities aren't available, carry your waste with you until you can dispose of it responsibly.
- Educate Yourself and Others : Learn about the local environment, culture, and customs. Respect local practices and traditions, and share your knowledge about responsible travel with others.
- Choose Sustainable Activities : Engage in eco-friendly activities such as hiking, snorkeling, or visiting national parks. Avoid activities that exploit animals or damage the environment.
- Leave No Trace : Follow the principle of "Leave No Trace," which means leaving natural areas as you found them. Pack out all trash, avoid picking plants, and refrain from carving or writing on rocks or trees.
- Plant Trees Whenever Possible : Participate in local tree-planting initiatives or plant trees in your own community. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and help support biodiversity, making them vital for a healthy environment.
