About

This is a private 8-day Kerala Tamil Nadu hill station tour package. You travel through four cool hill towns: the tea estates of Munnar, the wildlife lake at Thekkady, the star-shaped lake of Kodaikanal, and Ooty with its UNESCO-listed toy train. It is a slow, scenic trip in fresh mountain air, and costs from about INR 114,156 per person (twin sharing).

When the plains of South India grew hot, the British went up into the hills. Planters, officers and missionaries built cool retreats among the tea, the pines and the mist, and those hill stations still feel like a world apart today.

This trip links four of the best. You walk through endless green tea rows, watch wild elephants from a boat, stroll around a lake at 2,100 metres and ride a little blue train through the Nilgiri hills. The days are unhurried, the evenings are cool enough for a fire, and the route runs in one direction from Kochi to Coimbatore, so you never retrace your steps.

Who This Hill Station Tour Is For

  • Travellers who love cool weather and want a break from the heat of the plains and beaches

  • Tea lovers who would enjoy walking estates, visiting a tea museum and seeing a working factory

  • Couples and families looking for a relaxed holiday with scenic drives, gardens and lakes

  • Nature lovers keen to see the Nilgiri tahr, wild elephants and old shola forests

  • Rail enthusiasts: the Nilgiri toy train is one of the most charming rides in India

It is less suited to travellers who want beaches, big temples or city life. If you would like those too, we can combine this trip with Kerala's backwaters or the temples of Madurai.

The nights are cool, and in December and January can be cold. Pack warm clothing for all four stops. All the sites on this route are open to visitors of every faith.

The Places You Will Explore

Munnar: the tea hills

Munnar sits at about 1,500 metres, where three rivers meet. Its tea estates were planted from the late 19th century and cover the hills in neat rows of bright green. The drive up from Kochi passes waterfalls tumbling down the cliffs. You stay on a cardamom and coffee estate, visit Eravikulam National Park to look for the Nilgiri tahr on misty grassland, and learn about tea-making at the Tea Museum, ending with a tasting. Mattupetty lake and Echo Point add more views of tea slopes and pines.

Thekkady: spices and wild elephants

Thekkady lies lower, at about 900 metres, on the edge of Periyar Tiger Reserve. You stay in thatched cottages at Spice Village and walk through a spice plantation to see how Kerala's famous spices grow. Early the next morning, you take the first boat out on Periyar Lake, created in 1895. Wild elephants often come down to the shore to drink, especially in the dry months, along with sambar deer, gaur and plenty of birds.

Kodaikanal: the lake town of the Palani hills

The drive into Tamil Nadu climbs a winding ghat road with many hairpin bends into the Palani hills. Kodaikanal, founded by American missionaries in 1845, sits at about 2,100 metres around a star-shaped lake created in 1863. You can walk or cycle around the lake, follow the cliff path of Coaker's Walk, gaze at the three granite Pillar Rocks, and wander through Bryant Park, a botanical garden laid out in 1908. The air smells of pine and eucalyptus, and the town is famous for its homemade chocolates.

Ooty and Coonoor: the Nilgiri hills

Ooty, or Udhagamandalam, was the summer capital of the Madras Presidency in British times, and its gardens and stone churches still show it. The highlight is a ride on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a small train with wooden seats and big windows that winds through tea country and short tunnels. From Coonoor you visit a working tea factory and Sim's Park, then return to Ooty for the terraced lawns of the Government Botanical Garden. For a final view, you drive up to Doddabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiris.

After breakfast, drive east over the border into Tamil Nadu, and down to the plain at Theni. The flat land is a patchwork of banana, coconut and grape. Coaker's Walk is a cliff path along the edge of the hill, with a long view over the plain on a clear day. Drive on to the Pillar Rocks, three tall granite columns, each over 100 metres, above a deep valley. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Hill Station Double: Munnar, Thekkady, Kodaikanal & Ooty

We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.

How many days do you need for a Munnar Ooty Kodaikanal tour?

Eight days is enough to visit all four hill stations at a steady pace. This plan gives two nights each in Munnar, Kodaikanal and Ooty, and one night at Thekkady. With two more days, add a night at Coonoor or Kochi.

What is the best time to visit Munnar, Kodaikanal and Ooty?

November to February is the best time, with clear days and cool nights. October can bring showers. March is pleasant. April and May are busy with Indian holiday crowds, and June to September is the monsoon, when roads can close and the hills are misty. Eravikulam closes for about two months from February.

Is this a good Kerala Tamil Nadu hill station tour for foreigners?

Yes, if you like cool air, tea country and slow days. The route is private, with a guide at each stop. Four hill towns, a wildlife lake and a mountain railway fit into one journey, and the drives are mostly four to five hours.

How long is the drive from Kodaikanal to Ooty?

The drive from Kodaikanal to Ooty is about 260 km and takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours with stops. It is the longest day of the tour. We leave by 8 am, descend to Palani, cross the plain past Coimbatore, and climb the Nilgiri hills to arrive by late afternoon.

Why does the route go Munnar, Thekkady, Kodaikanal, then Ooty?

Kodaikanal lies a short way over the border from Thekkady, and Ooty lies far to the north-west, near Coimbatore. Running in this order crosses the hills once and ends close to Coimbatore airport, so no stretch is covered twice.

Can we ride the Nilgiri toy train?

Yes. We book the Ooty to Coonoor section, about an hour on the narrow-gauge line, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Seats are limited and the timetable can change, so we confirm it before you travel. If it does not run, we do the same route by car.

Can you see wild elephants at Periyar?

Elephants are often seen on the shore from the lake boat, mostly in the dry months. Sightings are never certain. Sambar deer, gaur and many birds are also seen. We plan for those animals and never promise a particular sighting.

Is Kodaikanal or Ooty colder?

Both are cool all year, and the nights are coldest from December to January, when they can fall to single digits Celsius. Kodaikanal is at about 2,100 metres and Ooty at about 2,240 metres. Pack warm clothing for both.

Which airports do we use?

You fly into Kochi (COK) and out of Coimbatore (CJB). Choose a flight from Coimbatore that leaves after about 2 pm, so you have time for the drive down from Ooty. Both airports have domestic and some international flights, and we check the schedule before you book.

How much does an 8-day Kerala Tamil Nadu hill station tour cost?

This 8-day trip costs about Rs.228,312 to Rs.246,577 per couple in the Premium room tier, about Rs.285,012 to Rs.307,813 for Luxury, and about Rs.404,712 to Rs.437,089 for Ultra-Luxury. Prices include the four hotels, vehicle, guides, entries and GST. International flights are not included.

Do we need a visa for India?

Yes. Most nationalities can apply for an Indian e-Visa online before travel. Check which airports accept e-Visa arrivals for your nationality, and apply at least a week ahead on the official e-Visa site.

Can we add Alleppey, Coonoor or Madurai?

Yes. A houseboat night at Alleppey fits at the start, before Munnar. A night at Coonoor, in the Nilgiri hills, replaces a day at Ooty. Madurai fits between Kodaikanal and Ooty as a longer option. Tell us your dates and we will price the extra nights.
