Privacy: Your driver keeps to the plan you set and waits out of sight at the resorts. Nothing is scheduled before breakfast unless you choose it.
Special occasions: Tell us about a birthday or anniversary during the trip and we will arrange a cake or flowers at the right resort.
Ayurveda: Tell the spa about any medical conditions or pregnancy before a treatment. The included treatments are relaxing massages, not medical programmes.
Safety: Kerala is one of India's easier states to travel in. Our team is reachable 24 hours. Swim at Kovalam only in calm conditions and where the resort says it is safe.
Drinking water: Drink bottled or filtered water only. The resorts and your vehicle provide it.
Dress code: Light cotton for the coast and backwaters; a warm layer for Munnar evenings. Cover shoulders and knees at the synagogue and any temple, and remove shoes where asked.

This is an 8-day private honeymoon built around four of Kerala's best boutique resorts, and the days are kept slow on purpose. You land in Kochi and spend your first night at Brunton Boatyard, an old boatyard on the harbour where every room looks out at passing ships. In the evening you can walk down to watch the Chinese fishing nets at sunset. From there you drive up to Munnar for two nights at Blanket Hotel & Spa, which sits on a cliff facing a waterfall. Mornings are for walking the tea rows in the mist, and one evening ends with a private candlelit dinner. Next you come down to the backwaters at Kumarakom Lake Resort, where you stay in a pool villa by Vembanad Lake. Here you'll have a couples' Ayurveda treatment, a private sunset cruise on the lake and dinner by the water. The last two nights are at Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra near Kovalam, in an old Kerala cottage above the sea, with a second spa treatment and a quiet dinner on the beach. ARRIVE KOCHI | BRUNTON BOATYARD
Route: Cochin International Airport (COK) to Fort Kochi, about 40 km
Your driver meets you at Cochin International Airport and takes you across the harbour islands to Fort Kochi.
Brunton Boatyard stands where George Brunton and his sons once built boats, more than a century ago. The yard closed long ago, and the building was restored as a hotel in a mix of English, Portuguese and Dutch styles. All 22 rooms, and their bathrooms, look out over the harbour mouth. Ships, fishing boats and sometimes dolphins pass the window.
Late in the afternoon, walk along the shore to the Chinese fishing nets. Each is about 10 metres high. Stones hanging from ropes at the back balance the net so finely that one man walking the main beam tips it into the water. At sunset the nets stand dark against the sky.

FORT KOCHI TO MUNNAR | UP INTO THE TEA HILLS
Route: Fort Kochi – Mattancherry – Kothamangalam – Adimali – Munnar, about 140 km
After breakfast, a short guided walk in Mattancherry. The Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568, has a floor of hand-painted tiles brought from Canton in the 18th century and glass chandeliers from Belgium. The lanes of Jew Town around it are full of spice warehouses and antique shops.
Then drive east into the Western Ghats. Past Adimali the road climbs through cardamom and pepper country, with the Cheeyappara waterfall right beside it.
Blanket Hotel & Spa sits about 8 km before Munnar town, on a cliff facing the Attukad waterfall. You arrive in time to sit by the infinity pool as the light goes over the valley.
Note on opening days: The Paradesi Synagogue is closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays. If Day 2 falls on one of those days, the walk covers Jew Town's lanes and the spice market instead.

MUNNAR | TEA, MIST AND A PRIVATE DINNER
Route: Munnar tea estates, Nallathanni, and back to the resort; local drives
Munnar's tea gardens were planted from the 1880s. The bushes follow the contours of every slope, so from a height the hills look combed. Mid-morning, walk a stretch of tea rows with a local guide, when the pickers are at work and the mist is lifting.
Visit the Tata Tea Museum at Nallathanni Estate, opened in 2004. It traces Munnar's tea from a hand roller of 1905 to a modern factory, and ends with a tasting.
The afternoon is free. In the evening, a private candlelit dinner is set up for the two of you at the resort, with the sound of the falls below.
Note on Eravikulam: Eravikulam National Park, home of the endangered Nilgiri tahr, can be added in the morning. It closes for the tahr calving season for about 45 to 60 days from 1 February.

MUNNAR TO KUMARAKOM | FROM THE HILLS TO THE LAKE
Route: Munnar – Adimali – Thodupuzha – Kottayam – Kumarakom, about 150 km
The road drops out of the hills through rubber estates to the flat land around Kottayam. You reach Kumarakom, on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, by early afternoon.
Kumarakom Lake Resort is built from old Kerala homes. The main restaurant is an ettukettu, an eight-sided house with two courtyards, once the home of the martial-arts teacher to King Marthanda Varma of Travancore. It was dismantled and rebuilt here by hand. The spa, Ayurmana, is also an old family home, moved here in one piece.
The resort's own one-hour sunset cruise goes out in the late afternoon. It is your first look at the lake.
The Human Story
Traditional Kerala houses were built by master carpenters, the thachan, using joints cut so exactly that no nails were needed. That craft is why an old house can be numbered, taken apart and put back up on a new site. Many of the resort's villas were rebuilt the same way from village houses.

KUMARAKOM | THE LAKE TO YOURSELVES
Route: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, the resort and Vembanad Lake; local
An early, optional walk in the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, 14 acres on the lake shore. Egrets, herons, darters and kingfishers live here all year, and migrant ducks and teals come from November to February.
Late morning, a couples' Ayurveda treatment at Ayurmana, the resort's spa.
The land around the lake is Kuttanad, where much of the farmland lies below sea level. Rice is grown in fields held back by earth dykes, and from a boat you look down at the crop. In the late afternoon a private boat takes the two of you out across the lake and along the paddy dykes to watch the sun go down over the water.

The longest drive of the trip runs south through Kottayam and along the coast past Kollam. You arrive at Niraamaya in the afternoon.

Should we stay on a houseboat or in a resort?
A resort gives you more space, a pool, a spa and a private dinner setting, while a houseboat gives you a night on the water. This package uses a lakeside resort with a private sunset cruise. An overnight houseboat can be added as an upgrade; note that houseboats must moor by dusk and do not cruise at night.
Do the resorts have private pools?
Some rooms do. At Kumarakom Lake Resort, the Heritage Lake View Villas have private plunge pools and the Presidential Suites have private pools, while the Meandering Pool Villas open onto a shared 250-metre pool. Blanket and Niraamaya have infinity pools with valley and sea views.
