About

This is a 17-day private road trip from Ladakh to Kashmir in northern India. You fly into Leh, cross Khardung La into the Nubra Valley, spend two nights beside Tso Moriri lake, then drive the Srinagar–Leh highway over Zojila Pass to Sonamarg, Srinagar and Gulmarg. Most days include a walk of one to four hours. Domestic flights are included. Prices start at about INR 271,507 per person for two people sharing.

Ladakh and Kashmir sit side by side on the map, yet they feel like two different worlds. Ladakh is bare rock, thin blue air and monasteries on ridges. Kashmir is pine forest, lakes and orchards. Driving from one to the other, you watch the landscape change in a single afternoon on the far side of Zojila.

We call it an "active" road trip because sitting in a car for two weeks is nobody's idea of a holiday. Long drives are followed by days on foot: dunes at dawn in Nubra, a shore walk at Tso Moriri, a glacier path at Sonamarg, a meadow walk in Gulmarg. The road is the route. The walks are the reason to stop.

Why This Ladakh and Kashmir Tour Works for Overseas Travellers

  • Slow start in Leh. Three nights in Leh (3,500 m) before the first high pass, and five nights in Ladakh before Tso Moriri.

  • Two nights at the lake, not one. The drive to Tso Moriri takes 7 to 8 hours. One night would leave no time to enjoy it and less time for your body to settle.

  • Zojila split into two easy days. A night in Kargil and a night in Sonamarg, so you never face the whole crossing in one long day.

  • Local experts in each region. A Ladakh driver and guide take you to Kargil, then a Kashmir driver and guide take over. Each knows his own roads, rules and stories.

  • Oxygen on the high legs. A portable oxygen cylinder and pulse oximeter travel with you over Khardung La, at Tso Moriri and on Zojila, with evening checks from your guide.

  • Flights and permits sorted. Your Delhi–Leh and Srinagar–Delhi flights and your Protected Area Permit are part of the package.

How Active Is This Trip?

  • Moderately active. Most days include a drive of 4 to 8 hours. About half the days also include a walk of one to four hours at an easy pace. Nothing needs technical skills.

  • Easy walks: Leh Old Town, the Hunder dunes and village lanes, the Tso Moriri shore, Srinagar's Old City.

  • Slightly harder: the Thajiwas Glacier path (about 3 km each way, with a steep 200 m climb at the start) and the Gulmarg ridge walk if the upper gondola is running.

  • Long drives: the road to Tso Moriri and the Leh to Kargil stretch take 7 to 8 hours with stops. Some sections are rough dirt road.

You should be comfortable walking at altitude and sitting in a vehicle for long stretches. If you have a heart or lung condition, speak to your doctor before booking.

Ladakh to Kashmir Road Trip Accommodation Categories

Hotels and camps are named as examples for each tier and are confirmed at booking. Karzok has only tented camps and guesthouses with limited power and hot water, so the three tiers there differ in tent size and set-up and not in the kind of stay. Kargil has a narrower choice than Leh, so Luxury and Ultra-Luxury guests stay in the same hotel's best room. Ladakh nights include breakfast and dinner. Ladakh's taxi rules allow only Ladakh-registered vehicles for sightseeing, so all tiers travel in an Innova Crysta throughout.

Altitude and Health

The biggest jump is the drive to Tso Moriri, about 1,000 m higher than Leh in one day. That is why five nights in Ladakh come first and why the lake gets two nights. Other safeguards:

  • Rest on arrival day in Leh, following the Ladakh tourism advisory.

  • No more than about 15 minutes at the top of Khardung La.

  • Evening oxygen checks from your guide on the high-altitude legs.

  • Drink 3 to 4 litres of water a day and skip alcohol at height.

There is no medical facility at Karzok. If symptoms get worse with rest, your guide takes you lower. Some travellers ask their own doctor about acetazolamide (Diamox); only your doctor can advise on that. SNM Hospital in Leh is the main hospital in Ladakh.

Is Kashmir Safe? Government Travel Advice

We want you to book with your eyes open. At the time of writing, the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar, Sonamarg and Gulmarg. The US State Department also advises against travel there, with an exception for Leh and eastern Ladakh. Other governments publish their own advice.

Travelling against your government's advice can invalidate your travel insurance. Before you book, please check your government's current advice and get written confirmation from your insurer that you are covered in Jammu and Kashmir. If cover is not possible, we can plan the Ladakh part alone, ending in Leh.

WHY BOOK THIS WITH BIZAREXPEDITION

A tailor-made, seventeen-day Ladakh-to-Kashmir overland journey planned by BizareXpedition Services Pvt. Ltd. (CIN U63090UR2016PTC007433), with the whole highway driven by road and a walk built into most days.

  • Five nights in Ladakh before Karzok. Leh, Hunder and Leh again give the body five nights at 3,050 to 3,500 m before the climb to Karzok at about 4,500 m on Day 8. The Leh administration's 48-hour rule is met on the first morning of Day 4, long before Khardung La on Day 5.

  • A full day at Tso Moriri, with two nights. The road to Karzok takes seven to eight hours with stops, so one night would leave no time at the lake. Day 9 is kept free for the shore, the monastery and the herders' tents, and the climb to sleeping height has a second night to settle.

  • Driving days and walking days alternate. A long drive is followed by a day with a hike, a village walk or a monastery climb: Shey and Hemis on Day 4, the Hunder dunes on Day 6, the lake shore on Day 9, Thajiwas on Day 13. The mix makes this an active overland india tour, with the road as the route and the walks as the reason to stop.

  • Zojila with a night on either side. Kargil on Day 11 and Sonamarg on Day 12 split the crossing into two shorter days. Zojila runs on set traffic timings, and a night at Sonamarg means the Thajiwas walk starts fresh the next morning.

  • A Ladakh driver and guide to Kargil, a Kashmir driver and guide after. Ladakh allows only Ladakh-registered taxis for sightseeing, and Kashmir has its own vehicles. The handover happens at Kargil, so each guide knows his own ground.

  • Oxygen on the high-altitude legs. A portable oxygen cylinder and pulse oximeter ride in the vehicle on Khardung La, Karzok and Zojila, and your guide checks readings each evening from Day 5.

Permits for Foreign Travellers

Foreign visitors need a Protected Area Permit for Nubra Valley, Khardung La and Tso Moriri. We arrange it through a registered agent in Leh. Leh, Kargil, Drass, Srinagar, Sonamarg and Gulmarg need no extra permit.

  • Send us your passport and Indian visa copies at least two weeks before travel.

  • Carry your passport every day. There are checkposts on the road to Nubra.

  • Make sure your insurance covers high altitude, medical evacuation and Jammu and Kashmir.

Practical Tips for the Road

  • Cash: there are no reliable ATMs after Leh and none at Tso Moriri. Carry about INR 10,000 to 12,000 for Nubra, the lake and Kargil.

  • Phone signal: good 4G in Leh and Srinagar, patchy elsewhere, and only BSNL at Tso Moriri. Foreign SIMs and Indian prepaid SIMs do not work in this region.

  • Power: charge phones and cameras in Leh before the lake.

  • Clothing: layers, a warm jacket, hat and gloves for the passes and the lake, plus sun protection. Cover shoulders and knees at monasteries and mosques; women cover their heads at the Jama Masjid.

  • Photography: ask before photographing people, and never photograph military posts or convoys.

  • Flights: Leh flights run in the morning only and can be delayed by weather. Book your international flight for the night of Day 17 or later.

PRACTICAL NOTES

  • Altitude and health. Leh is at 3,500 m, Hunder at about 3,050 m, Khardung La at 5,359 m by GPS and Karzok at about 4,500 m. Kargil is at about 2,700 m, Zojila at about 3,528 m, Sonamarg at about 2,730 m, Srinagar at about 1,600 m and Gulmarg at 2,650 m. The Leh administration's 48-hour rule is met before Khardung La. The climb from Leh to Karzok on Day 8 is about 1,000 m in one day, above the 500 m a day that the tourism advisory suggests, which is why five nights in Ladakh come first and why Karzok gets two nights. The advisory suggests light activity for the first two days in Leh and no alcohol or sleeping pills at height. Some visitors ask their doctor about acetazolamide, starting two days before Day 5. Only your own doctor can advise on that. There is no medical facility in Karzok. If symptoms grow worse with rest, descend and tell your guide at once. SNM Hospital in Leh is the main hospital.

  • Permits. Nubra Valley, Khardung La and Tso Moriri need a Protected Area Permit for foreign guests, arranged through a registered agent in Leh for a group of two or more on paper. Rules for Tso Moriri have been changed in recent years and some sources differ, so we confirm them with our Leh agent when we apply. We need passport and Indian visa copies at least two weeks before travel. Leh, Kargil, Drass, Srinagar, Sonamarg and Gulmarg need no permit.

  • Roads. The road to Karzok is paved in parts and rough dirt in others, and the last stretch from Sumdo is slow. Zojila is a narrow mountain road with changing traffic timings, and a landslide can close it. The Srinagar–Leh highway is open from about mid-April to November. Start days early, and expect your driver to change the plan on the day if the road demands it.

  • Cash and fuel. There are no reliable ATMs after Leh, and few in Kargil. Karzok has no ATM and no fuel pump. Carry rupees for tips, small purchases and site entries, roughly Rs 10,000 to 12,000 for the Nubra, Karzok and Kargil legs combined.

  • Connectivity and power. Srinagar and Leh have 4G on Airtel and Jio. Nubra's signal is strongest near Diskit, Karzok has only BSNL, and Gulmarg and the road to Kargil are patchy. Only postpaid SIMs from elsewhere in India work in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Karzok runs on solar power for limited hours, so charge phones and cameras in Leh. Tell family you may be hard to reach on Days 8 to 10 and 12.

  • Water and food. Drink three to four litres a day, more on the Khardung La, Karzok and Zojila crossings. Srinagar and Leh offer the widest choice of food; Kargil, Karzok and Sonamarg serve simpler menus.

  • Dress and photography. Bring layers, sun protection and a warm jacket, hat and gloves for Khardung La, Karzok and Zojila. Karzok nights fall well below freezing at times even in summer. Cover shoulders and knees in monasteries and mosques, and take off your shoes where asked. At the Jama Masjid, women cover their heads. Ask before photographing inside shrine rooms or people in the herders' camps, and do not photograph military posts or convoys.

  • Weather and flights. Every flight in and out of Leh runs in the morning. Srinagar flights can be delayed by weather. Book your international flight out of Delhi for the night of Day 17 or later.

  • Vehicles. A Ladakh-registered vehicle and driver run Days 2 to 11, since only Ladakh-registered taxis may run sightseeing in Ladakh. A Kashmir-registered vehicle and driver take over at Kargil for Days 11 to 17.

  • Tipping. Tips for drivers, guides and hotel staff are not included and are up to you. Your guide can advise on local practice.

  2. Support Local and Sustainable Businesses : Eat at local restaurants, buy souvenirs from local artisans, and choose tour operators that prioritize sustainable practices and support the local community.
  3. Respect Wildlife and Natural Habitats : Avoid disturbing wildlife or their natural habitats. Stick to designated paths and observe animals from a distance without feeding or touching them.
  4. Dispose of Waste Properly : Follow local guidelines for recycling and waste disposal. If facilities aren't available, carry your waste with you until you can dispose of it responsibly.
  5. Educate Yourself and Others : Learn about the local environment, culture, and customs. Respect local practices and traditions, and share your knowledge about responsible travel with others.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) & People Also Ask — Active Road Trip: Ladakh to Kashmir

We help you prepare for your trip and ensure an effortless and enjoyable travel experience.

What does this Ladakh to Kashmir road trip include, and what is left out?

It covers 16 nights of stays, Delhi to Leh and Srinagar to Delhi flights, a Ladakh vehicle and guide to Kargil, a Kashmir vehicle and guide after, permits, entries and the listed experiences. International flights, visa and insurance are extra.

Is Kashmir safe, and what do foreign governments advise?

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar, Gulmarg and Sonamarg, and the US State Department advises against travel there too, with an exception for Leh and eastern Ladakh. Insurers may refuse claims if you travel against your government's advice. Please read your government's current advice and ask your insurer in writing. If cover is not possible, our Ladakh-only packages carry the same Leh, Nubra and Hunder days.

Why seventeen days?

Four things need the time. Leh needs three nights before Khardung La, Nubra needs two, Karzok needs two because the road takes a full day each way, and the Kashmir leg needs a night on each side of Zojila. Fewer days would cut a lake night or a Kashmir day.

How active is the trip?

Moderately. Most days are drives of 4 to 8 hours, and a walk of one to four hours is built into about half the days: Shey and Hemis, the Hunder dunes and village lanes, the Tso Moriri shore, Thajiwas and Gulmarg. Nothing needs technical skill. You need to be comfortable walking at altitude and sitting in a vehicle for long stretches.

Will I get altitude sickness at Karzok?

Some mild effect, a light headache or poor sleep, is common above 3,000 m and is not itself a reason to worry. Karzok sits at about 4,500 m, about 1,000 m above Leh, so the plan puts five nights in Ladakh before it and gives it two nights. Ask your own doctor about acetazolamide before you travel. There is no medical facility in Karzok, and if symptoms worsen with rest, your guide arranges a descent.

What are the camps at Karzok like?

They are Swiss-style tents or simple rooms beside the lake, with attached toilets in the better tents, hot water in buckets and solar power for limited hours. There are no luxury hotels at Karzok, so the three tiers differ in tent size and set-up. Expect cold nights.

What permits do I need, and who arranges them?

A Protected Area Permit for Nubra Valley, Khardung La and Tso Moriri. We arrange it through a registered agent in Leh once we hold your passport and Indian visa copies, at least two weeks before travel. Leh, Kargil, Drass, Srinagar, Sonamarg and Gulmarg need no permit.

Will I have phone signal?

In Srinagar and Leh, yes, 4G on Airtel and Jio. Elsewhere it thins out: strongest near Diskit in Nubra, BSNL only at Karzok, and patchy on the road between Kargil and Sonamarg. Only postpaid SIMs bought elsewhere in India work in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Tell family at home to expect limited contact on Days 8 to 10 and 12.

Do I need a private guide, or can I join a group tour?

The plan is private throughout: one vehicle and guide in Ladakh, and one in Kashmir. No day is shared with another group's schedule, which matters most on Khardung La, the Karzok road and Zojila, where road and altitude conditions can change without warning.

What happens if a flight is cancelled or Zojila is closed?

A weather cancellation at Leh usually moves the flight to the next morning, and an inbound delay moves the whole plan by a day. A closed Zojila means a night in Kargil or Sonamarg. Seventeen days carry some slack on the road, so book your international flight for the night of Day 17 or later.

How much does this Ladakh to Kashmir adventure tour cost per person?

For this 17-day route, the modeled price is about Rs 271,507 to 293,227 per person at Premium, Rs 354,037 to 382,360 at Luxury, and Rs 487,597 to 526,605 at Ultra-Luxury, for two guests sharing. That covers stays, domestic flights, vehicles, guides, permits and the listed experiences. International flights, visa and insurance are extra.

Who is this trip best suited for?

A guest who wants to cross Ladakh and Kashmir on the ground, and who enjoys long mountain drives broken by walks. It suits someone who is fit enough for short hikes at altitude and who has checked the travel advice. Guests who want a fixed base and day treks can look at our trekking packages, and guests who want a shorter Kashmir and Ladakh combination can look at our twelve-day The Best of Kashmir & Ladakh.
