The drive to Agra runs a little over four hours, arriving with the afternoon free for Agra Fort — the red-sandstone fortress-palace Shah Jahan ruled the Mughal empire from, and where his own son later imprisoned him for eight years within sight of the monument he'd built for his wife. The Musamman Burj, the octagonal marble tower where that imprisonment happened, still frames the same view across the river that Shah Jahan reportedly watched out his final years.

This is the reason Agra gets two nights instead of the usual rushed one: a genuine sunrise entry at the Taj Mahal, not a hurried version squeezed between a long drive in and a long drive out. The marble runs through grey, pink and ivory in the first twenty minutes of light, before the crowds arrive — Shah Jahan built it over twenty-two years for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, in white marble quarried at Makrana and inlaid with semi-precious stone that still catches the light exactly as designed four centuries on.

Fatehpur Sikri, an hour away, is the odder companion story: a complete Mughal capital built by Akbar in 1571 and abandoned within fifteen years, reportedly over water shortage. The Buland Darwaza gate, the Panch Mahal's open-air storeys and Jodha Bai's Palace are essentially untouched — most circuits drive straight past it on the highway.

The afternoon is deliberately empty. Amarvilas's gardens, pool and spa are the point of a second Agra night — there's nowhere you need to be and nothing else booked.

The drive to Jaipur takes most of the day, arriving with the evening free to settle in. Either way, the evening is unscheduled — a chance to see the property itself before Jaipur's sightseeing begins tomorrow.

Amber Fort, eleven kilometres outside Jaipur above Maota Lake, was the Kachhwaha Rajput capital for over a century and a half before Jaipur itself existed. The Sheesh Mahal, its mirrored hall, is built so a single candle flame multiplies into what looks like a thousand stars across the ceiling. Jaigarh Fort sits directly above it, connected by a subterranean passage, and holds Jaivana — the largest wheeled cannon ever cast — alongside a panoramic view across the Aravalli hills.

Back in the city, the Hawa Mahal is best appreciated from the street: 953 small latticed windows built in 1799 so the royal women could watch the world go by unseen.

The City Palace is still partly a royal residence, and the museum sections hold the royal costume collection, an armoury of Mughal and Rajput weapons, and the Diwan-i-Khas, where two enormous silver vessels — among the largest silver objects in the world — once carried Ganges water for a maharaja travelling to England in 1902. Jantar Mantar, next door, is Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II's 18th-century observatory, its nineteen stone-and-marble instruments still functioning, including the Samrat Yantra, a sundial accurate to two seconds.

The drive to Udaipur closes the circuit's road travel — from here, the remaining days are Udaipur itself. The choice between the Oberoi Udaivilas and the Taj Lake Palace is worth making deliberately rather than defaulting to whichever is better known: Udaivilas sits on the lake's edge with its own pool villas and gardens, built for privacy, while the Lake Palace occupies its own island mid-lake, reachable only by boat, and is the more overtly iconic of the two.
