Note on sightings and season. Rajaji closes for the monsoon from 1 July to 14 November every year, and safaris run only outside that window. Winter, from mid-November to February, and spring, March and April, give the steadiest game viewing, with animals drawn to the river and waterholes. No sighting on a jeep safari is ever guaranteed, and a morning can pass with birds and deer and no elephant or cat. We build in two zones on two different mornings for a better overall chance, and we say this plainly rather than promise a tiger.

Chilla and Motichur: Two Zones, Two Kinds of Sighting

Chilla Zone

Chilla is the largest and best-known zone of Rajaji National Park, a tiger reserve of 820 sq km spread across the Shivalik hills of Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal districts. The Ganga runs through the park and splits it in two, and Chilla sits on its eastern bank, where the forest opens into wide grassy floodplain — the best ground in the park for elephant herds, sometimes 30 or more animals together at a waterhole. The zone became part of a tiger reserve in April 2015, the 48th in India and only the second in Uttarakhand after Corbett, with a current estimate of upward of 15 tigers using the reserve alongside leopard, sloth bear, sambar, chital and the rare swamp deer. Over 315 bird species have been recorded, with hornbills, peafowl and birds of prey common on a Chilla morning. After the safari, a walk out to the Chilla barrage — where the Ganga Canal begins and the powerhouse generates 144 MW — gives a view back over the river and the sal forest.

Motichur Zone

Motichur is the smaller, rockier zone west of the Ganga, where sal forest gives way to Shivalik outcrops. Those rocks are what make it leopard country: guides report confirmed sightings on roughly 3 in 10 mornings, the best odds for leopard anywhere in the reserve, because the terrain suits a territorial cat that prefers height and cover to open grass. Motichur is also part of the Chilla-Motichur corridor, one of the connecting routes elephant herds use to move between the river floodplain and the upper Shivalik ridges — herds seen at the Chilla waterhole one day may be the same animals crossing through Motichur's forest the next. The zone was a wildlife sanctuary in its own right from 1936, decades before Rajaji was created by merging it with the Rajaji and Chilla sanctuaries in 1983, and it keeps a distinct character: quieter, tighter, and good for spotted deer and birds if the cats don't show.

PRACTICAL NOTES

• Sightings. This is a wildlife safari, and no animal sighting is ever guaranteed. Chilla has good elephant numbers; Motichur has the best leopard odds in the reserve. Birds, deer and the forest itself are worth the morning even without a big sighting.

• Gate times. Safari gates open very early, often before 6 am in winter and earlier still in summer. The jeep collects you about 45 minutes before the gate opens.

• Dress and gear. Wear muted colours, carry water, and bring a hat and sunscreen. Binoculars and a zoom lens help, and the naturalist can point out what to look for.

• Photography. Still cameras are generally allowed with a small fee at the gate; check with your guide on the day. Flash photography of animals is discouraged.

• Noise. Stay quiet in the jeep near wildlife. Loud voices and phone calls reduce everyone's chance of a sighting, yours included.
