Embark on an extreme 4×4 Himalayan expedition, traversing rugged high-altitude terrains from Manali to Chandratal, Spiti Valley, and back. This is an extreme off-road path designed for adventure lovers seeking untouched Himalayan wilderness. Note: These are high-altitude regions- you ascend directly from 6,700 ft to 14,100 ft at Chandratal. Do not push your body; acclimatize, hydrate, and take breaks.

Day 1

Manali - Chandratal

Route- Manali – Atal Tunnel – Khoksar – Gramphu – Chhatru – Batal – Chandratal Base

Road Condition:

Manali – Koksar- Gramphu-  wide road, easy drive; tourist traffic around Solang.

Gramphu – Chandratal lake - Turns into a rough off-road track with stones, mud, shallow water streams, and narrow curves. One of the roughest Himalayan roads

 

Your 4×4 adventure kicks off from Manali, climbing through Solang Valley and entering the mighty Atal Tunnel North Portal before rolling down to Koksar, the last proper stop for food, washrooms, and network. From here, the journey turns raw as you push towards Gramphu, crossing the check post and passing the ancient Bhoj Patra trees- the point where true off-roading begins. The trail tightens and gets wilder as you throttle through rocky tracks, glacier streams, and steep cliffs en route to Chhatru, a remote riverside zone that sets the tone for pure Himalayan grit. The challenge intensifies on the broken, waterfall-cut route to Batal, with the iconic Chacha-Chachi Dhaba offering warmth and support in the middle of nowhere. After paying respect at the Kunzum Mata Temple, the trail opens into vast mountain valleys as you descend on a mix of broken and semi-paved roads toward the mighty Chicham Bridge, Asia’s highest bridge hanging over a 1,000-foot gorge. The expedition continues toward Kibber, navigating narrow mountain tracks with dramatic drop-offs and crisp Spiti winds before rolling into the iconic Key Monastery zone.
