About

Seven slow days in the Himalayas. Two quiet bases. Morning chants, mountain air and a phone you mostly forget about.

Most holidays leave you needing another holiday. This one is built the other way round. For six nights you stay in just two places: a forest retreat above Rumtek Monastery near Gangtok, then a room facing the Kangchenjunga range in Pelling.

Each day has one gentle practice, one easy outing and a long open afternoon. You can skip any of it and simply rest.

It is fully private, planned for you alone, your partner or your family. No group coach, no fixed departure, no rush.

What is the North East Digital Detox Wellness Retreat?

It is a private 7-day, 6-night wellness holiday in Sikkim, India, who want a quiet week away from screens and schedules. You stay 2 nights near Rumtek and 4 nights in Pelling. It includes 5 guided meditation sessions, 4 private yoga sessions, spa treatments, monastery visits, forest walks, a local guide, a private car and your Sikkim permit. Prices start at about Rs.99,288 per person, twin sharing. The best months are October to December.

Sikkim suits this kind of trip. It is a small Himalayan state with a living Buddhist culture. Monks begin their prayers before dawn, and visitors are welcome to sit quietly at the back. Much of West Sikkim has weak mobile signal, so a digital detox happens partly by itself. Where there is signal, you can choose phone-free hours, and your guide and driver stay reachable for safety.

This is a Gangtok Pelling digital detox holiday, not a medical or therapy programme. It works best for people who want rest, fresh air and some structure without a packed sightseeing list. Guests who want a formal Sikkim monastery meditation retreat for foreigners, run by a monastery itself, can apply directly to the monastery, and BizareXpedition can plan the travel around it.

Why a digital detox in Sikkim works

Sikkim makes switching off easy. It is a small Himalayan state in North East India with a living Buddhist culture, clean air and very little traffic. Monks begin chanting before dawn, and guests are welcome to sit quietly at the back.

The other reason is practical. Mobile signal is weak across much of West Sikkim, so your digital detox happens partly on its own. Where there is signal, you choose your phone-free hours. Your guide and driver keep their phones on, so you are never out of reach in an emergency.

And then there is the view. Pelling looks straight across one deep valley at the Kangchenjunga, the third-highest mountain on Earth. On a clear October morning, the snow turns pink before the sun reaches your balcony.

PRACTICAL NOTES

  • What this is, and is not. A restful travel retreat with meditation, yoga and walks. It is not a medical, psychological or therapy programme. If you have a health condition, check with your doctor before travelling.

  • Digital detox. Mobile signal is weak in much of West Sikkim. Phone-free hours are voluntary. Your guide and driver keep phones on for safety and can reach you at any time.

  • Meditation. Sessions are secular and beginner-friendly. No experience or belief is needed. Formal monastery retreats are run by the monasteries themselves; BizareXpedition can plan travel around one you arrange.

  • Monastery etiquette. Dress modestly, remove shoes, keep silent during prayers and ask before photographing monks.

  • Fitness. Walks are gentle except the uphill trail to Sanga Choeling. Pelling is at about 2,150 metres; take the first day slowly.

  • Permits. Sikkim needs a free Restricted Area Permit for foreign nationals, arranged before you travel.

  • Road days. Days 1, 3 and 7 each involve about five hours on mountain roads. Carry motion-sickness remedies if you need them.

  • Drinking water. Drink sealed bottled or filtered water only.

  • Dress. Layers: nights are cold from October to March. Bring comfortable clothes for yoga and meditation.

  • Tipping. Appreciated but not required. Guests often tip the driver, guide and teacher at the end of the trip.

Itinerary (Day Wise)

Your driver picks you up at Bagdogra and takes you up the Teesta valley to a forest retreat above Rumtek. The first evening ends with a short breathing session. The next morning you sit at the back of Rumtek Monastery while the monks chant their prayers, then have your first meditation class. On day three you drive through South Sikkim, stop at Buddha Park in Ravangla, and get to Pelling in time to see the sun set on Kangchenjunga. The next three days go slowly. You walk up through the forest to Sanga Choeling, meditate beside Khecheopalri Lake, and visit Pemayangtse Monastery and the old Rabdentse ruins, with open afternoons and spa time in between. On the last morning you take one more look at the mountains and drive back down to Bagdogra for your flight.
